It's interesting that there seems to be "highbrow" and "lowbrow" Ukrainian Nationalism springing from the same source but with different aesthetics, and similarly relying on invented ritual, symbolism and appeals to a mythological past. Compared to almost any saint you could pick, Saint Michael has a very different standing in Catholicism compared to the Eastern Orthodox Church, so once again it's Galicia shifting... idk a cultural Overton window? Weka posted:Was Stalin morally correct It is sometimes asked whether it is not possible to slow down the tempo somewhat, to put a check on the movement. No, comrades, it is not possible! The tempo must not be reduced! On the contrary, we must increase it as much as is within our powers and possibilities. This is dictated to us by our obligations to the workers and peasants of the USSR. This is dictated to us by our obligations to the working class of the whole world. To slacken the tempo would mean falling behind. And those who fall behind get beaten. But we do not want to be beaten. No, we refuse to be beaten! One feature of the history of old Russia was the continual beatings she suffered because of her backwardness. She was beaten by the Mongol khans. She was beaten by the Turkish beys. She was beaten by the Swedish feudal lords. She was beaten by the Polish and Lithuanian gentry. She was beaten by the British and French capitalists. She was beaten by the Japanese barons. All beat her because of her backwardness, military backwardness, cultural backwardness, political backwardness, industrial backwardness, agricultural backwardness. They beat her because to do so was profitable and could be done with impunity. Do you remember the words of the prerevolutionary poet: "You are poor and abundant, mighty and impotent, Mother Russia." Those gentlemen were quite familiar with the verses of the old poet. They beat her, saying: "You are abundant; so one can enrich oneself at your expense. They beat her, saying: "You are poor and impotent '" so you can be beaten and plundered with impunity. Such is the law of the exploiters-to beat the backward and the weak. It is the jungle law of capitalism. You are backward, you are weak-therefore you are wrong; hence, you can be beaten and enslaved. You are mighty-therefore you are right; hence, we must be wary of you. That is why we must no longer lag behind. In the past we had no fatherland, nor could we have one. But now that we have overthrown capitalism and power is in our hands, in the hands of the people, we have a fatherland, and we will defend its independence. Do you want our socialist fatherland to be beaten and to lose its independence? If you do not want this you must put an end to its backwardness in the shortest possible time and develop genuine Bolshevik tempo in building up its socialist system of economy. There is no other way. That is why Lenin said on the eve of the October Revolution: "Either perish, or overtake and outstrip the advanced capitalist countries. We are fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced countries. We must make good this distance in ten years. Either we do it, or we shall be crushed. Was Stalin morally correct to look to the west?

Weka posted:Title please? Sorry if I missed it. Oh and thanks for the info on the Roman Catholic roots of Canada earlier. The Return of Ancestral Gods: Modern Ukrainian Paganism as an Alternative Vision for a Nation (Wink, wink) How socio-political turmoil has inspired a new religious movement based on the imagined past. As Ukraine struggles to find its national identity, modern Ukrainian Pagans offer an alternative vision of the Ukrainian nation. Drawing inspiration from the spiritual life of past millennia, they strive to return to the pre-Christian roots of their ancestors. Since Christianity dominates the spiritual discourse in Ukraine, Pagans are marginalized, and their ideas are perceived as radical. In The Return of Ancestral Gods, Mariya Lesiv explores Pagan beliefs and practices in Ukraine and amongst the North American Ukrainian diaspora. Drawing on intensive fieldwork, archival documents, and published sources not available in English, she allows the voices of Pagans to be heard. Paganism in Slavic countries is heavily charged with ethno-nationalist politics, and previous scholarship has mainly focused on this aspect. Lesiv finds it important to consider not only how Paganism is preached but also the way that it is understood on a private level. She shows that many Ukrainians embrace Paganism because of its aesthetic aspects rather than its associated politics and discusses the role that aesthetics may play in the further development of Ukrainian Paganism. Paganism in Eastern Europe remains underrepresented within Pagan studies, and this work helps to fill that gap. Extensive comparative references to various forms of Western Paganism allows English-speaking readers to better understand the world of Ukrainian Pagans. https://www.mqup.ca/return-of-ancestral-gods--the-products-9780773542624.php But related to Canada, would it shock you to know that part of the reason Ukrainian nationalists were enabled here was not just for Cold War realpolitik but because of the internal religious conflicts that have made up Canadian history? The joke mentioned at the end of the first page was that their new reported had a French surname so the editors wrote "Despite the name, Mike is Protestant". That's from For Canada's Sake: Public Religion, Centennial Celebrations, and the Re-making of Canada in the 1960s In 1967, Canadians cheered and ate cake on Parliament Hill, spent millions on outlandish modern buildings, and flocked to the World Expo in Montreal. In his groundbreaking book, Gary Miedema uses Canada's centennial celebrations to illustrate how religion informed nation-building and national identity during the 1960s. Breaking away from the traditional analysis of church policy, sermons, and clerical scholarship, For Canada's Sake presents an exemplary analysis of the meaning behind religiously informed public celebrations and rituals such as centennial hymns and prayers and Expo pavillions. Miedema argues that the 1967 celebrations reveal the continued importance of religion to Canadian public life, showing that a waning "Christian Canada" was being replaced by an officially "interfaith" country. The author throws into bold relief the varied attempts of government officials and religious leaders to come to terms with new Canadian and global realities, as well as the response of Canadians to their own increasing religious diversity. In a post-9/11 world where public religion has become hotly contested, Miedema's valuable study sheds light on how Canada has been reconstructed through a greater recognition of religious pluralism. So, Ukrainian Nationalism of the Galician kind found very fertile soil in Canada because basically they helped maintain the balance between the Anglo Mainline Churches and French RCs, settled outside of Montreal or Toronto where any tipping of the demographic balance had historically ended in riots, and were committed anticommunists. Canadian Catholic organizations and Papal officials of various kinds helped doctor their histories in the Displaced Persons camps and get them to Canada, as part of a ratline, but the Canadian government was happy to participate as well. I love my beautiful mosaic nation. e: It also says that the Ukrainians did not get along with the Jewish community that was also beginning to assert religious and ethnic identity in Canada at that time, more or less shrugging it off as "for some reason" jfc Canada lol. Additionally, Sanders' best friend in the world Joe Biden was elected and Sanders was at pains during the primary campaign to say how he and Joe were exactly the same in policies and goals. Awareness raised. Movement built. Trump defeated. Best friend Joe Biden elected, who could not have won without Sanders' vocal support and the votes and volunteer hours of Sanders' supporters.

It kind of seems like the ethnogenesis of the non-Russian Ukrainians is that they were "Poles" who sided against the Polish Revolt and had a different liturgical language. I can't get over the fact that they were even called Rusyns (suspiciously similar to "Russians") when their main enemies were the Poles. That all made sense within Austria-Hungary but when they were merged with the former Russian Empire they didn't consider themselves Russians either, so here we are.

I believe I may have found the cause of US support for the war, Oil Empire: Visions of Prosperity in Austrian Galicia At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Austrian Empire ranked third among the world’s oil-producing states (surpassed only by the United States and Russia), and accounted for five percent of global oil production. By 1918, the Central Powers did not have enough oil to maintain a modern military. How and why did the promise of oil fail Galicia (the province producing the oil) and the Empire? In a brilliantly conceived work, Alison Frank traces the interaction of technology, nationalist rhetoric, social tensions, provincial politics, and entrepreneurial vision in shaping the Galician oil industry. She portrays this often overlooked oil boom’s transformation of the environment, and its reorientation of religious and social divisions that had defined a previously agrarian population, as surprising alliances among traditional foes sprang up among workers and entrepreneurs, at the workplace, and in the pubs and brothels of new oiltowns. Frank sets this complex story in a context of international finance, technological exchange, and Habsburg history as a sobering counterpoint to traditional modernization narratives. As the oil ran out, the economy, the population, and the environment returned largely to their former state, reminding us that there is nothing ineluctable about the consequences of industrial development. https://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674025417 Galicia was also the Texas of Austria-Hungary. Imagining them as Albertans, even before they started coming here... I have to say it resonates lmao. e: but fr, it turns out Galicia was the birthplace of Hasidic Judaism and Jewish nationalism as well. There's a book called The roots of Ukrainian nationalism: Galicia as Ukraine's Piedmont that I can't find but appears to be a slam dunk for what I'm coming around to. It's cited all over the place. ee: also one The Politics of Cultural Retreat: Imperial Bureaucracy in Austrian Galicia, 1772-1867, which has an interesting premise I don't quite understand: "An illuminating history of state-building, nationalism, and bureaucracy, this book tells the story of how an international cohort of Austrian officials from Bohemia, Hungary, the Hapsburg Netherlands, Italy, and several German states administered Galicia from its annexation from Poland-Lithuania in 1772 until the beginning of Polish autonomy in 1867. Historian Iryna Vushko examines the interactions between these German-speaking bureaucrats and the local Galician population of Poles, Ukrainians, and Jews. She reveals how Enlightenment-inspired theories of modernity and supranational uniformity essentially backfired, ultimately bringing about results that starkly contradicted the original intentions and ideals of the imperial governors."
