You go and investigate. If it's dark you might need a light source, such as a lighter.

I always shake my head when drivers put those walk-behind pallet jacks onto a lift gate. If 1 inch either way is the difference between success and getting 500 lb of pallet + jack dumped onto you, maybe this is not the tool for the job

I presume the proper way to do that unload would be to scoot it out partway so you can make enough room to get a jack behind the pallet and push it onto the lift gate?

Call the fire department and gas company. If you're the fire department you park a bit away, call the gas company, and evacuate the area. You don't force doors on locked houses.

If you're the gas company then I don't know what they do. Clamp the line if it's plastic or bring in a big cork or something? I know they're often hesitant to shut off large areas of gas service. At that point it's their problem

Well, first thing, you probably don't wanna use an electric lift for that sort of work, given how big it is. a manual jack with that size of pallet would probably be able to 180 that stack inside the confines of the truck. Or if it went too far, be light enough that it wouldn't flip the entire stack right off the liftgate.

It's also pretty common to just drop the rear front wheels closest to the handle off of the liftgate. Immediately drops the pallet and stops it and when you lower the liftgate the pallet is still on the raised jack and ready to be moved. Saves a couple seconds compared to lowering the jack on the liftgate and then pumping it back up on the ground.

As we have seen it's not recommended with an electric lift...

When workers cut a gas line for the building across the street from me, the gas company just crimped the line to the building shut and fixed it without shutting service down to the rest of the neighborhood. I don't even think they asked anyone to leave the area.

When workers bored straight into a 20" gas main a couple miles from me, they evacuated a 1/2 mile radius, shut down a couple freeways and shopping malls and shut off gas for a chunk of the city. It was the only time in my life I got a useful EMS notification on my phone.

Prepare for the end.

My son and I were next door to a natural gas explosion caused by a contractor hitting a gas line like this one. It blew up the neighboring building with one casualty.
When we arrived for his play therapy appointment, the whole block smelled strongly and those beepers were going off like crazy. The landlord to the building was greeting folks coming in and telling them the fire department gave them the all clear to be there, they got it fixed, etc.

About 10 minutes later the building we were in shook sideways and the neighboring restaurant (located right above the blast) had no roof.

Rule of thumb: if you’re hearing those alarms and smell a strong odor of gas, GTFO before you call. The explosion we were near was “safe” according to our city’s and the contractor of the ordeal. Turns out they didn’t know poo poo lol

This is one to trust your gut (and nose) on, maybe not the folks saying “things are fine”

They should be, but the amount of stories of contractors looking up and calling for the locations of utilities, following that information and still hitting lines is depressingly high. Even better when they look stuff up, carefully locate the thing physically and make sure they know exactly where things are. And then hit some undocumented nonsense 10 feet next to it.
