I agree with Pilfered Pallbearers points. I only discovered taskmaster cause I watch a lot of clips/shows of British Panel shows on youtube. I am sure Alex can see demographics of where people are watching TM's channel on youtube and if the audience gets big enough they can bring it over for a re-try. I found a good litmus test on whether or not someone is going to enjoy taskmaster is to just show them the "Throw the potato in the hole" task, if seeing Alex and Greg build Joe up only to completely destroy him in a span of about 2 minutes doesn't entertain them, I don't think they are going get into the show.

More relevantly to the discussion, at hand, I think there were some things that popped up (before? or) during the pandemic that although they were on TV and I never personally watched, sounded similar to panel shows. Wasn't there a "celebrities playing games" style show called "Celebrity Game Night"? I can't imagine that had a cash prize or anything. Also there was that Netflix remake of the Murderville detective show which was just celebrities riffing and didn't really have to rely on the prize so much. I don't think the charity idea is all that bad honestly. It could be a really good start. If you could convince a few "real" celebrities or even two and fill out the rest of the cast with some higher profile SNL alumni (or other improv comics), then do a limited five episode thing where you split some large amount of money amongst different charities by points earned across the season (so its not so much about winning as opposed to just doing your best), you might be able to take the same path as UK, where it starts small and grows as people get used to the format. Dropout Taskmaster should have Brennan as taskmaster and Sam as the assistant (he's the one I feel has the most Alex Horne energy, even when he's running Game Changer etc) imho e: my top 5 tasks for introducing people to taskmaster, in no particular order: 1) coconut businessman (series 5) - great riffing from greg, especially with aisling's and bob's attempts, and nish's terrible southern accent is hilarious 2) Alex Horne's pop up time shop for balloon bop (series 12) - mostly for victoria and desiree's attempts but also because of the phrase 'missed by a bee's dick' 3) make the most exotic sandwich/eat the most exotic sandwich (series 4) - one of the classic fake-out tasks and probably the best. mel's monument to diabetes is amazing, as is the tiny 'oh, gang' she lets out when she gets the second part of the task 4) get the potato in the hole (series 2) - naturally 5) prize task: the creepiest thing (series 7) - I kinda feel like you need to have at least one prize task on the list, and between the mummified cat, Kerri's horrific t-shirt, and Rhod's short film, this would be my first choice (plus Phil's actually quite lovely submission). This isn’t really possible with taskmaster because there’s so much setup for each task, which means multiple days of on location filming + multiple days of live show filming. All of this is a uniquely American problem.

Jimmy Carr recently released an answer in a reddit AMA that revealed for the UK its 6 days of filming at the Taskmaster house (his statement was that he is interested in doing the show but never has 6 days free due to his crazy schedule). I also know they film two studio segments a day based on people mentioning how the audience works. I don't think 6 days of home filming is that much of a commitment for something you know is a one-off for a good cause, especially since with a shorter season it might be even less? But then again I'm not a celeb so I have no idea what their schedules are expected to be like. And while I agree that Taskmaster shines in long seasons, getting it started is my priority and where I'm approaching the problem from. Finding people that the general public really wants to watch (which is helped by a shorter schedule) and getting them used to the format is something I'd personally consider to be pretty important, and I do think short seasons help with that. I don't know if Taskmaster would have worked in the UK with longer seasons from the start. I do know that Alex had a lot of trouble getting people for the first season until he convinced Frank Skinner. I don't know the ins and outs of British Comedy but that's what I've read in a bunch of behind the scenes stuff. Getting the American equivalent of Frank Skinner to get other people on board would probably be easiest with a shorter season at first.

Don't forget the need to make it a full hour with the prize/3 tasks/live format. It seemed the pitch meeting of prize tasks being "something they bring in from home" got misinterpreted, and it was so terrible. When everybody loves it as the introduction to understanding how the contestants think when you get told they need to bring in "best liquid" or "best hand crafted item" but also, I think the "single story with backyard and pool" wasn't the best field for this show, when it would've been better with a weird ranch style (that you could "build upon" and a camper van wouldn't be out of the ordinary) But also, I agree with some of your casting choices, so many missed opportunities here, just to see Nikki Glaser "create a how to video" or Ken Jeong making a song for a country he hits with a dart on a map. It isn't reinventing the wheel, it's just about casting, location and good/funny challenges.

I always knew Alex Horne had a terminal case of improv-brain, but from his episode on Off-Menu, it seems like he's dedicated enough of his person to being a weird little freak and keeping straight-faced that the person underneath all that just kinda atrophied into nothing. Beyond Alex's lack of intimidating authority and the need for the admin of the Tasks to be separate from the judging, I think he might just be incapable of really jumping into a judgement role.

(Tbf it was the "hello" baby monitor episode, and not the melon smash) But hey, good news, Alex Horne is on Lego Masters tonight and also, we have a New Years Treat!
