I agree with Pilfered Pallbearers points. I only discovered taskmaster cause I watch a lot of clips/shows of British Panel shows on youtube. I am sure Alex can see demographics of where people are watching TM's channel on youtube and if the audience gets big enough they can bring it over for a re-try.

I found a good litmus test on whether or not someone is going to enjoy taskmaster is to just show them the "Throw the potato in the hole" task, if seeing Alex and Greg build Joe up only to completely destroy him in a span of about 2 minutes doesn't entertain them, I don't think they are going get into the show.

I finally watched the second episode yesterday (YouTube reminded me by putting it in my recommendations). Just want to say great work! The tasks, the presentation and the editing really capture the Taskmaster spirit. It's a shame about the corrupted or lost footage but I think you really made the best of it.

I appreciate it a whole lot. It was such a looming presence in my life last year that it genuinely feels surreal that I don't have it constantly waiting for me to put more time into, so any reminder like this makes my day.

Also, I know this isn't really the thread to have an in depth discussion on youtube, but it's really interesting to hear about the recommendations thing, since it's all a complete mystery to me and I kinda figured that whatever number of views I had at this point was going to generally be it (now that I've shared it everywhere I intended) since its not really a mainstream video and I don't have any previous content or subscribers or anything. I'm glad the algorithm is helping me out at least a tiny bit instead of entirely ignoring me.

More relevantly to the discussion, at hand, I think there were some things that popped up (before? or) during the pandemic that although they were on TV and I never personally watched, sounded similar to panel shows. Wasn't there a "celebrities playing games" style show called "Celebrity Game Night"? I can't imagine that had a cash prize or anything. Also there was that Netflix remake of the Murderville detective show which was just celebrities riffing and didn't really have to rely on the prize so much.

I don't think the charity idea is all that bad honestly. It could be a really good start. If you could convince a few "real" celebrities or even two and fill out the rest of the cast with some higher profile SNL alumni (or other improv comics), then do a limited five episode thing where you split some large amount of money amongst different charities by points earned across the season (so its not so much about winning as opposed to just doing your best), you might be able to take the same path as UK, where it starts small and grows as people get used to the format.

Just saw above. Who’s line is an interesting example. People love who’s line, but it’s significantly sillier and more rapid fire than taskmaster. I didn’t touch on it above, but standard taskmaster is probably considered to slow moving (jokes per minute) for American TV for most viewers.

I got my brother to watch Taskmaster and he bounced off of it saying it felt too slow for him.

I blame his anime-poisoned brain though.

Dropout Taskmaster should have Brennan as taskmaster and Sam as the assistant (he's the one I feel has the most Alex Horne energy, even when he's running Game Changer etc) imho

e: my top 5 tasks for introducing people to taskmaster, in no particular order:

1) coconut businessman (series 5) - great riffing from greg, especially with aisling's and bob's attempts, and nish's terrible southern accent is hilarious
2) Alex Horne's pop up time shop for balloon bop (series 12) - mostly for victoria and desiree's attempts but also because of the phrase 'missed by a bee's dick'
3) make the most exotic sandwich/eat the most exotic sandwich (series 4) - one of the classic fake-out tasks and probably the best. mel's monument to diabetes is amazing, as is the tiny 'oh, gang' she lets out when she gets the second part of the task
4) get the potato in the hole (series 2) - naturally
5) prize task: the creepiest thing (series 7) - I kinda feel like you need to have at least one prize task on the list, and between the mummified cat, Kerri's horrific t-shirt, and Rhod's short film, this would be my first choice (plus Phil's actually quite lovely submission).

IMO the show shines much better on a full season. You need time to build the character and having one offs doesn’t really do it. Even for a known quantity the show is so zany you can’t really know how people will handle it.

The celebrity game night poo poo requires one day of filming with 0 prep from the celebs, and they usually film 2 or more eps. This means one day of filming can get like 2-5 episodes. This makes it super low commitment and cheap as hell as you only gotta pay the celeb for one day.

This isn’t really possible with taskmaster because there’s so much setup for each task, which means multiple days of on location filming + multiple days of live show filming.

All of this is a uniquely American problem.

All of this is a uniquely American problem.

Jimmy Carr recently released an answer in a reddit AMA that revealed for the UK its 6 days of filming at the Taskmaster house (his statement was that he is interested in doing the show but never has 6 days free due to his crazy schedule). I also know they film two studio segments a day based on people mentioning how the audience works.

I don't think 6 days of home filming is that much of a commitment for something you know is a one-off for a good cause, especially since with a shorter season it might be even less? But then again I'm not a celeb so I have no idea what their schedules are expected to be like.

And while I agree that Taskmaster shines in long seasons, getting it started is my priority and where I'm approaching the problem from. Finding people that the general public really wants to watch (which is helped by a shorter schedule) and getting them used to the format is something I'd personally consider to be pretty important, and I do think short seasons help with that.

I don't know if Taskmaster would have worked in the UK with longer seasons from the start. I do know that Alex had a lot of trouble getting people for the first season until he convinced Frank Skinner. I don't know the ins and outs of British Comedy but that's what I've read in a bunch of behind the scenes stuff. Getting the American equivalent of Frank Skinner to get other people on board would probably be easiest with a shorter season at first.

I think they take it if they want it, give it back if the original owner actually wants it back and if neither want it it goes in the bin.

Don't forget the need to make it a full hour with the prize/3 tasks/live format.

It seemed the pitch meeting of prize tasks being "something they bring in from home" got misinterpreted, and it was so terrible.

When everybody loves it as the introduction to understanding how the contestants think when you get told they need to bring in "best liquid" or "best hand crafted item"

but also, I think the "single story with backyard and pool" wasn't the best field for this show, when it would've been better with a weird ranch style (that you could "build upon" and a camper van wouldn't be out of the ordinary)

But also, I agree with some of your casting choices, so many missed opportunities here, just to see Nikki Glaser "create a how to video" or Ken Jeong making a song for a country he hits with a dart on a map.

It isn't reinventing the wheel, it's just about casting, location and good/funny challenges.

I always knew Alex Horne had a terminal case of improv-brain, but from his episode on Off-Menu, it seems like he's dedicated enough of his person to being a weird little freak and keeping straight-faced that the person underneath all that just kinda atrophied into nothing.

Beyond Alex's lack of intimidating authority and the need for the admin of the Tasks to be separate from the judging, I think he might just be incapable of really jumping into a judgement role.

He's tall, he can "play" a bossy type, but I'm sure in the frame of an hour they would go off script, and it'll be something like his old talk show, where it would be something taken from the banter.

"Wait a minute, did you just say you like pie more? We're asking you to decorate a cake, you don't even have to eat it!"

I could actually hear it, plus he's as tall as Greg!

It's that "one that got away" because it's a show that has multiple different types of comedy in one episode, and should have the pull, but comedy central broke the show into something just "fine" (Reggie would've been a better contestant) and CW tried putting a slightly edited version but it got one of the LOWEST viewership in history. (Tbf it was the "hello" baby monitor episode, and not the melon smash)

The Guardian, 2022 posted:

Early on, the team attempted to take the show to the US, but changes to the format broke the spell and it was quickly cancelled. “The main problem was it was half the length of the UK version, but with the same number of ad breaks,” he says. “It forced too many changes.” Horne enjoyed the experience of walking out in front of American audiences to a roar of applause, “despite the fact that they had no idea who I was”, but he has no plans for a second shot. Instead, American audiences come to Britain – often flying to London to sit in on the live show recordings at Pinewood. More than 70% of the millions of people who have watched Taskmaster clips on YouTube are American, a fact that has led Avalon to recently launch an on-demand dedicated Taskmaster channel in the US.

Sad it won't be attempted again, but really happy to see they know about the cultural appeal.
