Boom, permanent engagement. Advertisers will love it. Please don't fire me."
Genuinely surprised Enol hasn't already made web Twitter like one of those insidious sites that overwrites your history or whatever the gently caress so you can't actually press back anymore. Or opens a new tab behind the one you're on with some porn on. Those sites that I've been told exist and have no personal experience of are just the worst.

Also views is a loving dumb metric because you can't differentiate between who is looking at stuff incredulously, open mouthed, and who is injecting it into their veins. It is however thematically consistent with Elon's opinion that anyone interacting with Twitter is a good thing even if they are literal Nazis.

It's great fun when people are doing this to single lines of chat messages so it's 1 line of text 1 line of emote spam. There's an entire group of people that use discord by only emoting at what other people say.

I'm not in too many public discords anymore I'm still in one for codes for a phone game I was playing when sick that's used in this example then I left because I haven't played it in 6 months.

The reason why Tesla uses visual data and not LIDAR is because other companies are using Lidar and Elon insisted that Tesla be different.

LIDAR 's commonly used, to my understanding, because it's harder for the vehicle to misinterpret the data. It only realistically needs to know there is [OBSTACLE IN FRONT/SIDE/BEHIND AT X METERS] and parse from there whether the vehicle should stop/avoid/turn away/etc, while visual tracking means it has to take video footage and parse if there even IS a thing in front, and try to determine WHAT that thing is, and how to respond to it. Is it a small child crossing the street to swerve and avoid? An SUV braking suddenly in the lane ahead that requires immediate braking? Does it even see it at all as it barrels down towards that obstacle at the speed limit?

As someone who does professional web development, I both appreciate and despise this. :stonklol:

Stereo vision is a loving pain to set up; you need a pair of cameras in perfect vertical alignment and taking frames in perfect synchrony to get a good stereo pair for depth estimation, even before you deal with trying to eliminate image noise or objects that only appear in one image, or glossy / smooth surfaces that are hard to accurately reconcile. Even if everything goes perfectly you end up with a noisy disparity map with holes in it from occlusions.

I tried to get it working for ages on a research robot and my conclusion was there’s a reason everyone just uses LIDAR instead. There’s just no benefit to stereo vision other than cost (or biological plausibility, which was my excuse)

It's a known fact that your brain handles vision by filling in blanks and outright making poo poo up all the time.

Best to go with that system rather than LIDAR.

edit: I use robots that have vision systems all day and lmao I would never trust a vision system to drive a car, ever.

Since the literal second of your birth your brain has been analysing and sorting visual data while devolving a system of object recognition that only today's supercomputers are matching in some areas. No computer that will be part of a car can analyse images in real time as good as you can see things.

And that's just object recognition. You also have a model of the world in your head that's impossible for a computer in a Tesla to match. You know what a child is. You know they live in houses and go to school and will follow a ball into the street. Not only can you see a child way better than a computer you can predict what they will do next.

Humans have had millions of years to develop pattern recognition in visual data so powerful that it can see patterns where there aren't any. AI has been around for less than a single human lifespan. Also, humans still get into plenty of accidents. If you could hardwire radar and lidar to your brain to increase spacial awareness, it would be a huge boon to driving. AI has the advantage of being able to do that so Elon's refusal to utilize those technologies is severely handicapping Tesla's functionality.
