Vomik posted:aren’t biblical angels supposed to be horrifying to behold and can blind you looking at them if you don’t just die? Yes, it’s a large part of the story of the Nativity. Those shepherds had an extremely bad time. e: To explain better, the Magi were like philosophers who discovered the Incarnation through opening their minds to it, inquiry, following a distant star. The shepherds were poor yokels who slept amongst their sheep and were confronted by sights so terrifying they aren’t even really given shape in the Gospels and a deafening and blinding chorus of the heavenly host singing that the barrier between heaven and earth had been parted. This was not a sweet Charlie Brown moment but something sort of like the last pages of a Lovecraft story. The narrative purpose is that the Magi understood what was happening it but those poor guys experienced it. The edges of Christmas have been throughly sanded down by American sentimentality and commercialism, but if you can try to understand the term “God Fearing”, that’s what the angels in the Nativity story invoked. Yeah, the higher-ranking angels especially are supposed to look freaky. The creatures with man-eagle-ox-lion heads from the Book of Ezekiel are assumed to be cherubim, for example. I just played through Persona 5 and I appreciated how they portrayed Powers and Thrones.

Tankbuster posted:drat, if only there was a religion where the magi were priests. Not really related to Ukraine, other than race science produces weird outcomes sometimes. Ben-Hur, the best selling novel of the 19th century, was written at a time when the British were "discovering" that India had an ancient past and beautiful philosophical tradition that had identified many of the truths Westerners had presumed they had a monopoly on, first through Christianity, then through the Enlightenment, then through being racially superior. To keep in step, they had to develop ideas like the beautiful pure North Indian Aryans were proto-Christians, philosophers and basically Greeks/Persians who were subsumed and polluted by South Indians. Yeah... Not coincidentally, many of the Ukrainian nationalist theories propose a pre-history of a pure race that was "Russified/Polanized/Magyarized" and lost touch with blah blah blah. Anyways Ben-Hur is interesting as someone trying pretty sincerely to not be racist in his descriptions of Jews, Arabs, Egyptians, Indians and so on, doing actual historical research - burdened by the state of historiography at the time - but then you hit these moments and all of those attitudes come out. Take the imo progressive and thoughtful depiction of the Jewish people that pauses to say "Wherever on the land men go, and on the sea ships, the face and figure of the Jew are familiar. The physical type of the race has always been the same; yet there have been some individual variations..." which then lists all of the ways a Jew could look. Why, do you ask? So that the author can describe Mary thus: "(Mary's) eyes were blue and large, and shaded by drooping lids and long lashes; and, in harmony with all, a flood of golden hair, in the style permitted to Jewish brides...". These guys could not help themselves, it's pretty wild. Yes, Mary is portrayed unashamedly as a Jew, something that would make most people in the 19th century cringe, and I think was actually pretty important, but then, she's a blonde haired and blue eyed one. How race is constructed and depicted is relevant to a lot of these Ukrainian Nationalist myths, and particularly how they have constructed the idealized Ukrainian as descended from both Norse and Cossack, while also "western". Just like Mary was both Jewish and I suppose "Anglo-Saxon". I mean, I don't have to tell anyone ITT that race science and nationalist mythology are bullshit, but it is interesting how they have to weave these contradictions together. The golden haired flower crown Ukrainian womanhood depicted in even the western media the past year is similarly a fantasy, and similarly serves a purpose. Miss Universe is already uncomfortable as a competition that seems suspiciously similar to finding the most beautiful/archetypical woman of a ethnicity/nationality rather than a country, and the costumes and hair styles have always played a role in that. So while you can come up with plausible explanations for the specific costume of Miss Ukraine, a large part of what's going on is what Ukrainian nation she is supposed to be a representative of, and as blood and soil amounts to official policy these days, imo it's impossible to look at it without suspicious of some racial element. A flower crown is not "just" a flower crown in Ukraine these days, nor is braided golden hair, or a sword. Back to Ben-Hur, One of the best stories of the Magi and Nativity though. It's genuinely touching until it takes you out of the work by moments of "oh this was written in the 1800's... what the gently caress... that's not great...". Lew Wallace, Ben-Hur posted:The Egyptian and the Hindoo looked at each other; the former waved his hand; the latter bowed, and began: For some levity, there's a pretty cool field of history IMO that studies historical fiction and history films, and some of the essays they produce are pretty interesting. Ben-Hur, more than any I've seen, has essays on the homoerotic relationship between Messala Severus and Judah Ben-Hur. I've seen everything from essays on Patroclus and Achilles in the Wolfgang Petersen film to biographies of Carleton Heston begin with "as you know, the sexually charged nature of Lew Wallace's Ben-Hur...". Just an aside to and aside but lol, full book here https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/2145/pg2145-images.html#chap04 Frosted Flake has issued a correction as of 19:03 on Dec 23, 2022 |

drat, thats a lot to chew and read over. As an aside, the ukranians should reject their slavic heritage altogether and cossackmaxx themselves until they return to Indo-Iranian religion prior to zoroastrianism. Imagine sitting around in yurts all day, bathing in weed smoke and praying to Dyḗus ph₂tḗr/*Pleth₂wih₁ for bountiful herds along the sea of grass.
