It sounds like he has what basically sounds like a gambling/simulation addiction and he realized he could get more people to give him money to gamble/invest if he made motions about altruism during league of legends load screens

Unsurprisingly there were a lot of terrible investments ("surely one of these blockchain/token/exchange/NFT/etc will have an actual use case")

if I had the sales skills to convince people to hand me billions, i’d:

1. hire professionals and yell “follow laws!!” at them and also “create records that we follow laws!”
2. hire lawyers to draft “in the event this business is not profitable I the undersigned hereby agree to walk away with like $45,000,000 bucks scott free, and these professionals I hired they all get a couple million too.”
3. as a completely optional stretch goal, maybe actually try to create a successful crypto business? doing, whatever that is

like step two is my goal, step three is the sales pitch

in the unlikely even step 3 somehow happens, recognize I’m an idiot with a good sales pitch and be a public figurehead guy and let the professionals do whatever that is all about

I could understand this maybe a bit more in the earlier days of crypto, when poo poo like Doge were spiking despite being worthless, but isn't the shitcoin market entirely saturated with lovely pre-print scamcoins now?

There's always room for another turd in the crypto bowl.

The problem is, as mentioned above, these weirdos assigned a non-zero chance of these projects going up in value by infinity percent and thus calculated that the EV of purchasing more turds was basically always positive.

quote:

The presumption for pretrial release in federal cases
Start with this: in federal criminal cases, bail is governed by the Bail Reform Act of 1984. That scheme starts out with a presumption that a person should be released on their own recognizance or on an unsecured appearance bond — that is, a promise to pay a certain amount of money if they fail to show up for court. The magistrate judge may only deviate from that presumption if he or she “determines that such release will not reasonably assure the appearance of the person as required or will endanger the safety of any other person or the community.” The magistrate judge may only detain the defendant pretrial if he or she finds that “no condition or combination of conditions will reasonably assure the appearance of the person as required and the safety of any other person and the community.”

Seems like their plan was simply that if they went around making every high-risk high-reward bet they could, eventually one of them would pay off and they’d be able to gloss over the ones that failed along the way. No real smarts about it, just trying to brute-force their way into finding the “next big thing”.

Hey, look. Look, if- if you screw me on this, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine, you rat bastard!
Reminds me a bit of how there were some real estate things back in the 80s/early 90s that did something similar. In one of the cases I seem to recall some folks did prison time or something, but then a few years later the market recovered. Some talk about how, "Well, had they been able to ride out the crisis for another couple of years, they would have been very successful and no one would have cared about the mishandling and illegal behavior because everyone would have made money."
