I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic but men were taking tons of upskirt pictures of women and girls, especially on packed commuter trains.

I guess I phrased the OP poorly.

When I take a photo in camera.app, there's no shutter sound. I've heard of the Japan thing, but I can't find an option in settings to turn one on.
Phone is off silent mode and volume is set to around ¾.

What I want is when taking photos from a tripod with the bluetooth remote, it to make some sort of sound so I know it works and the drat thing didn't de-sync itself again.

Thanks for the tip; easy enough to temporarily disabled Live Photos when on the remote shutter.

Flexibits is raising the yearly subscription price for Fantastical about +$17 so it’s around $57 a year now.

I did their “$12 for 12 months” sale or whatever it was last year but don’t think I’ll be renewing because I don’t use any of their advanced functionality.

I think I was grandfathered in from buying fantastical a while ago, I don’t even know what advanced functions I’m missing. It works great and I’ve never had any “wish it did x too” moments.

Thanks for this post btw. This isn't anything I saw in any of my normal news channels. I swapped to Bitwarden over the weekend hoping the opensource platform keeps them in better shape. I cleaned up my list and only had 30 or so passwords to change. I saw some folks on Reddit with hundreds and hundreds of accounts to secure. I guess my internet security isn't optimal because on sites like this I wouldn't use a password gen.

What do folks use for news apps? Do y'all like Apple News?

Apple News is ok, but is massively passive aggressive about any news-site you choose to mute.
It’ll grey out the content but the text will still be readable and where the image would go they slap “you blocked this content.”
Just loving unacceptable.

Plus every other line is an ad and the app is super aggressive about pushing “mainstream” publications like People Magazine, etc.

Yeah it’s so dumb how it handles blocked sites. Just don’t push it into my feed! Jfc.

Also giving stuff thumbs down has no effect, seemingly.

Yeah, I’ve been hitting thumbs down on every Opinion article since Apple News was created.

One thing that helps is enabling the “Restrict Stories in Today” setting and then you won’t have blocked sources showing up anymore (because you have to whitelist sources). A bit of a pain to set up if you want a wide variety of sources, but worth it.

I started reporting everything I don’t want to see as “hate speech” (regardless of the actual content) and my feed has cleaned up really nicely. I do the same to ads on my Instagram too.

It seems to work so I’m going to keep doing it. Sorry random minimum wage content checking person who has to figure out why an article or advertisement for something benign is marked as hate speech.

apple news is not "ok", it is absolutely terrible and unusable. my entire feed is filled with news about the united states. i don't give a poo poo that it's snowing in buffalo, i have no idea where maricopa county is. but there it is, front and centre. i tried to fix this by subscribing to "local news" and following channels that are local to me, but none of them ever show up. the app is still entirely focused on a foreign country.

Yeah, I have to agree. Apple News is plain bad. It feels like watching all the news channels all at once with every major outlet having their feed. I’m a NYT subscriber, so I pretty much just use that for news. Sorry if this isn’t helpful, OP.

Ground News or The Factual get my vote. Both are subscription services, but offer a quick way to see different sources’ takes on the same news item; either by political bias or proximity to the event.

The latter has way better UI/UX and nicer summaries, but is a lot less customisable and doesn’t have dedicated feeds for the UK.

Both offer a generous trial period so try them out.

I also have an RSS feed list that I’ve been building for nearly 20 years at this point, but that’s more for ‘specialist’ areas of the internet…

Ground News seems to be designed around the idea that it’s important to hear from extreme right wing publications, and it’s one of those places that puts The NY Times as extreme left.

Oh no, I didn’t hear about this “critically important” story that somehow only Fox News was covering? What a shame!

I briefly tested it when I was trying to find an app for infrequent, critical breaking news updates. Ground News’ first top-level notification was “a new Twitter Files post was released!”

Oh the notifications absolutely got disabled immediately, but that goes for any news app if you want to have a remotely sane life.

I don’t pay tons of attention to the specific bias labels, but it is nice to be able to quickly see how the more batshit insane ‘reporters’ are trying to spin things. If only to be a little prepared for whichever boomer family member is going to repeat that.

That also applies to state media like Russia’s & China’s. Since I don’t live in the States and am generally more interested in international news, my default sorting is by proximity to the event. It seems to do pretty well in that case.

For USA or Canada residents I would suggest trying The Factual first.

Not this though. I live in NYC and apparently coverage for my neighborhood isn’t worth getting near accurate. Carrot gets it fine with realtime notifications to boot. Carrot also has a UI that doesn’t feel like a hotel USA today frontpage.
