Also, it really isn’t, it just isn’t in the same mindset as the other threads are that is going to create more diversity of opinion. Also personally, the war has gone on long enough that I don’t think there are clear white and black hats in this thing and the best solution would be actual negotiated settlement in which whatever is left of the population is allowed to live in peace.

Pulling a FF and just quoting a book description

The Sultan and the Queen: The Untold Story of Elizabeth and Islam

Jerry Brotton

Brotton (Great Maps), professor of Renaissance studies at Queen Mary University of London, details the difficult diplomatic shifts Elizabeth I maneuvered in the wake of her excommunication in 1570. Having lost much of her previous access to Catholic commerce, Elizabeth found new connections in fellow Protestant lands as well as the Islamic world, notably the Ottoman Empire. An unstable triangle of Protestant-Muslim-Catholic alliances followed. Brotton successfully details the “unlikely” alliance through intriguing portrayals of England’s first ambassadors to Iran, Morocco, and the Ottoman Empire, noting the uneven growth of trade between the island nation and Muslim powers. Thanks to the greater number of resources from the Western travelers, the narrative remains strongest when focusing on the East, but Brotton offers a glimpse of the impressions Muslim diplomats and traders made when visiting London. He also explores their impact on British culture through the evolution of characterizations in Elizabethan theater, especially the works of Marlowe and Shakespeare. The book’s true action occurs in smoothly written descriptions of delicate negotiations set in the East, highlighted with the attempts by Protestant, Catholic, and Muslim rulers to pit rivals against one another. Brotton blends meticulous research with a deft touch of the mysterious, resulting in a fascinating shared history of East and West.

The book sounds interesting, but it's worth noting that European powers allying with the Ottomans was not as unheard-of as this makes it seem.

It takes a special kind of politics-following moron for foreign policy to be the most important thing on their plate

I imagine it's partly why socdems in the west get away with having such bad foreign policy: to the extent that they win elections, they don't "need" to be good on it

Here is the full video, he mentions that the Ukrainians are having to learn to "grap the Russians by the belt".

I once encountered then-Lt Col. Milburn trucking through the darkness from the rec center in the Mojave on two beer night at the end of a training cycle. No cover, somewhat wobbly. He brushed past without a word before I realized who he was and before I could muster up an appropriate greeting. I suspect he had consumed more than two beers.

Without condoning anyone killing anyone else- I do hope he is enjoying killing consenting combatants in his retirement.

Another large wave to Russian missile strikes. Reportedly over 120 missiles. I think this is the largest barrage to date.

90% of Lviv has lost power.

Edit: Sergey Lavrov said Russia is considering strikes on railway lines, bridges and tunnels to disrupt the flow of weapons from the West to Ukraine.

It’s extremely funny (and horrifying) how they’ve come to this conclusion only after they’ve been solidly beaten almost everywhere and lost two thirds of all their progress. Anyways, it’s too late now, russia is beaten at this point and it’s just about negotiating a face saving exit from here on.

(Serious: my own opinion is that there's no good guys and it's bad with everything going on in domestic countries that money is being spent on proxy war, and that the war is being used as an excuse to make people's lives worse. See that story about cancelling a national holiday in Denmark to pay for weapons)

I'm currently reading John B. Lundstrom's "First Team" about fighter combat in the first six months of WW2 in the Pacific, so there hasn't been a lot that's relevant to post, in basically any of the threads I frequent

my only take so far is that there's this persistent image in histories of WW2 in the Pacific:

"the Zero was the best fighter in the theater in terms of speed and maneuverability, but had problems with a lack of armor and self-sealing fuel tanks which made them vulnerable to even minor hits. American [naval] aviators were able to hold their own against the Zero by utilizing the ability of the Wildcat to simply dive out and away from any engagement that it didn't like, and then used superior group tactics when opportunities presented itself"

but what I've been reading so far seems to show that Zeroes and Wildcats rarely encountered each other during this first phase of the war - Butch O'Hare earned his Medal of Honor shooting down unescorted G4M Betty bombers, and other early American aces like Jimmy Thach similarly cut their teeth on shooting down floatplanes and scouting flying boats. By the time you start seeing dedicated fighter-on-fighter engagements, the USN has Corsairs and Hellcats, which are much closer to the Zero in technical performance

Quite a bit of common knowledge about WWII turns out to be poorly documented bs, when put under any scrutiny. Not unusual for history, but WWII was a pretty well-documented war so there's a lot discord between myths and reality.
