I was reading reviews and stumbled on Amanda & the Alien, a little piece of schlock that some people really seem to dig. Seems like it holds up really well as a trans allegory and is a bunch of fun to boot. I got a big smile on my face when I saw this review:

I made this film 27 years ago and am humbled and flattered by the comments here by those who enjoyed it. But I can only give it three stars; I’d like to think I’ve done better since.

Anyone else find other filmmakers discovering that people these days really enjoy their old b-movies?

no specifics sorry but a thing I've definitely noticed is filmmakers not having watched their films since making them and being surprised at how popular they are even 30-40-50 years later. it's just a memory from a time in their life for them but for fans it's a coherent film they might even have memorized

4. Avatar the way of water
5. Nope
6. Three thousand years of longing

My favorite instance of this was in the Troll 2 documentary when after being shocked/a bit hostile to audiences/the cast about them not recognizing how good the movie is and how it's about the struggles families face and whatever it sounds later like he never even saw the completed film himself. Eventually he does and at the end he's like "Yes uh in a way I guess I could see how certain things about the film might be funny to some people" lmao like no poo poo? :laffo:

That's great. I wish I had specific titles, but I remember in Nightmare USA the author Stephen Thrower asks multiple directors about scenes or circumstances around their films and they just plain don't remember because it was so long ago, or like Fragrasso they never even watched the finished film. Of course some of the filmmakers do recall everything, especially if they just recently did some rerelease or restoration work, and some of them have funny bits about watching their own movie for the first time in forever and saying like, what a piece of poo poo! or, here's what I'd do different today, or even just that they're happy how it came out.

Brett Piper's audio commentary on the ancient DVD of Dark Fortress (aka Nymphoid Barbarian in Dinosaur Hell) is worth a listen. Lots of old school FX chat plus his dissatisfaction with both the film itself and especially Troma's braindead marketing. I don't care, I love the movie. One shot was supposed to have a beautiful galaxy hanging in the sky above the characters, a glass matte he hung in front of the camera, but the film lab color corrected it to be almost invisible and he didn't have the funds or time to reshoot!

I feel really bad about my Top 2022 list because this was maybe the worst year for me on keeping up on new releases. I have been trying to watch more movies from the 1940s-1970s, and that's going to continue in the new year I think.

Top 5 of 2022 for me, right now, is Barbarian, NOPE, Avatar 2, Everything Everywhere, The Northman. Almost all of my new release watches were genre films, partially from the local indie theater's lineup, and partially from everything being VOD (I can't pay $20 for a single rental, folks).

I had a shameful 2022 numbers wise. I hit 50ish for the year. Best things: Everything Everywhere All At Once (even bought the disc and the book, something I don't really do for modern/current stuff), Full Tilt Boogie (making of Dawn till Dusk from 96), Jackass Forever, You Won't Be Alone
Worst: Morbius, Get Hard, Hot Tub Time Machine 2, Halloween Ends...lot of .5-1 star films.

Hoping to do better for 2023. Prioritize things I know are good over full-on crap.
