I read somewhere about the klon that internally it’s basically splitting the signal into 3. So as well as the clean boost and gain sides there’s also a path that just sends low end through clearly.

I’ve only really used the helix modelled klon tho. I prefer the Timmy model in it tbh. Timmy gives you a shittonne of highs and lows and then some filters to dial them out to taste. It’s really good when you have an amp sound you like and you just want more gain since the filtering allows it to just do that without adding anything unwanted.

This actually sounds like it’d suit the tones I like better. There’s good cheap clones of this too right?

Edit: I could probably swing the Caline clone if anyone has experience with the quality of it?

Not what you asked but I somehow ended up w/ like 6 different TS clones (inc the Joyo one, Plumes, a Horizon Precision Drive BYOC thing) and the Caline one w/ the 808 and 9 switch and the picture of the pirate on it is my favorite

20 years ago I bought a second hand Washburn MG-74 to learn how to play then promptly didn't. This christmas I got one of my kids a Thomann 1/2 sized acoustic and bought myself an Eastcoast acoustic at the same time so we can learn to play together, and now I've trying to sort out my Washburn. I've given it a new set of strings as the ones on it were 20+ years old. The volume knob and 5 way switch were both crackly so I squirted some Super 10 in them and they're sorted. Now I need some help with the Tone control. It's a standard dial pot, but it pulls out to a second position and spins nicely so all good there. However, it doesn't seem to work as a range of tonal changes. With it set to 0, the tone is very muffled and muddy. I turn it only to 1 and it's clear and ringing, but past 1 it doesn't change at all. It's the same in all 5 switch positions, and in both Tone positions. Is this normal for a tone control like this?

Tone pot is bottom left, volume pot mid right.

Gratuitous guitar shot.

It sounds like the pot is burned out, which can happen. It's probably not an urgent fix since 1) it's not like it's going to get worse and 2) 90%+ of players have the tone either all the way up our all the way down 99% of the time anyway.

It's not incredibly complicated to fix if you know how to solder, but being push-pull means there's going to be a bunch of other points to connect and being the tone pot there's probably a bunch of other wires soldered to it to go to ground so it may be moderately annoying.

They sell a pad for the guitar but at that point you're managing 2 pieces, might as well get a full stand. I did pick one of these up for the beater in my office.

I also ended up getting a midi controller, not fond of the color but it was cheap for the unit. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZNV41PD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for this. As a total beginner I think I'll just turn it on and forget it exists for a year or so. Revisit it when I know a bit more.

$169.91 plus shipping($27), sunburst 22 & 24 fret, white in 22 fret only but it has a maple fretboard and block inlays. So, yeah, under $200 delivered for a 30" scale, two humbucker baritone. The equivalent Harley Benton is $177, but with ~$75 shipping and an 8-10 week wait right now. Not to mention their wonky JM shape.

Whats the deal with guitars from these folks? Are they basically the 'Bikes Direct' of guitars? I've been wanting to try a Jazzmaster, and these are kind of unbelievably cheap.

Yeah, I don't think i'm gonna actually buy one. I've been bitten by Bikes Direct before , I was just curious about the guitar equivalent.

Related question, are Squier Jazzmaster's considered 'real' Jazzmasters? Those can be relatively affordable. I know people liked the J Mascis one, right?

The Classic Vibes are as close to real as you can get, minus the pickups which are basically P90s in a Jazzmaster cover. The J Mascis one was also P90s in a JM cover, complete with adjustable pole pieces. It also had an "adjustomatic" bridge instead of the traditional rocking JM/Jag/Mustang bridge.

I've had a recent Classic Vibe and still have one of the late Vintage Modified which had Duncan Design JM pickups which were "real" JM pickups. Nothing wrong with the CV, but I preferred the pickups on the VM and the rosewood board.

The bikes direct comparison is perfect. Great products for the price and good to fulfill GAS but not the best quality control and you might get a dud.

Squire classic vibe jmasters are great but the j mascis is incredible for the price if you can find one that someone isn't asking too much for. I've seen a few people trying to ask crazy prices for them, pushing up towards fender prices.

verman and widefault gave pretty good answers, but I think it also depends on whether your idea of a Jazzmaster is "vibes" or "accurate specs" which are both valid

The j mascus ones used to be $400 all day every day, maybe $500 is a reasonable post inflation price but I'd feel hornswoggled if I paid above that. Although I only buy used stuff too so if that's not what you're looking at disregard

I've got a ~10 year old used guitar. The volume pot is very scratchy, and deoxit hasn't fixed it. Next thing to do is replace the pot, right? While I'm in there, does it make sense to replace any other components? I was planning to do both pots, but what about other stuff like the capacitors or resistors? Are they worth replacing since I'm already in there taking things apart, or are they probably fine to leave if they're not showing any noticeable problems?

This one followed me home today. 2011 Traditional Pro Flying V, got the '57 in the neck and a BB3 in the bridge. Realized I had no strings at home though so will have to try it out tomorrow, spent this evening polishing it up a bit instead.

If you're happy with it otherwise I'd leave em be. Depending on the guitar you could always upgrade the pickup selector for a more durable one, or I'd you've had any issues with the jack you could replace that.

Love the pickups in those things and they sound really nice split so you'd actually get some use out of the push-pull pots. They're light/comfy guitars too.

Good used buy in the $300s (USD) and a no brainer if you can get it in the 200s.

"That must weigh heavily on your soul. Let me purge it for you."
I've really been taken by the PRS S2 Vela, I've just become aware of it and it checks a lot of my boxes, being outside the Gibson/Fender set, an offset in a wood finish with a comfort contour, and even the style of pickguard that I like. Without having played one yet the only other checkbox I think I have is filtertron pickups, but I like the tones I've heard so far. Don't know if I should seriously look at buying it on sale at Guitar Guitar or should maybe just keep an eye out on the second hand market if I like how it feels.

There's also a semihollow which I'd really like to try but it's a fair bit more expensive, but it also sounds good and even has a comfort cut which I almost never see on semihollows. Might take some effort to find both models in one place to do a fair comparison but might make some calls, it's something to do.

When folks set their sights on a model and want to find a better deal, either for it to go on sale or come up second hand, are there any tools for that, like a google alert? Or is it just a matter of a lot of manual searches?

I ended up getting this vintera '50s mod strat because for whatever reason it's freakishly light and well built, has a nice maple fretboard, sounded great and pretty well discounted, and I want to use it to do my own electronics / partscasting. I never properly learned how to setup a strat but with this mim I lept into it. Learned quite a bit and I've got it setup better than my mia I think, so now I can translate over to that.

The guitar despite the 'mod' tag sounds very vintage but also weirdly like david gilmour so at some point I started tooling around with some pink floyd solos again, and then sort of confronted the fact I always slide when he bends and it doesn't sound right. And that correlates to a lot of errors in other lead stuff.

That's mainly because I never bend up! Only down! And his high string full step bends are impossible to do bending down.

I mean, it's not new to me, at all. After 20 years of guitar playing I have been mocked to my face for bending down a few times.. it just feels more natural to have the grip strength. But of course you lose the space for more than maybe a half step on the high strings.

For whatever reason I decided to commit to breaking 20 years of ingrained technique.. The first day was kinda just pain and frustration and trying different movements, wondering if maybe it was lack of callouses. It took about 3-4 days of attacking the relatively simple but extremally bend heavy solos in 'shine on...' and it feels very natural now, pretty much no pain doing all the bends he does. It's been 100% all in the wrist and fingers technique for me (though maybe I should credit straightening the neck a bit and lowering the action too). It's great though, because now I feel like I have a lot more control.. wish I did this years ago when the guitar teacher pointed it out!

Anyways, compared to the '57/'62 pickups in the avii reissue, the vintera is thinner sound for sure, but the output gains are wildly different so I also had to adjust knobs quite a bit. I still prefer the '57/62s but honestly these vinteras pickups arent bad.

So how many strats is too many?

I still shamefully want a '57 avii in seafoam green, but sweetwater says months. And from what I've seen roughly half of the ones that show up are duds.

So that gets me to three strats.. one modern rosewood strat that balances really well in rhythm, one vintage-ish reissue nitro strat to decorate my closet, and one mim that destroys the other 2 after i get fralins or whatever for it
