Those Goddamn Rainbows Are At It Again

Not from my GOTY list, but since I watched VideoGames play FFX and its on their list, it reminded me of one of my favourite pieces of gaming music ever written:

Final Fantasy X OST - Mount Gagazet
https://youtu.be/1susdDMvCq4

It plays as Yuna is literally and figuratively climbing a mountain to her death. Very evocative and poignant.

And something that was on my list:
Horizon: Forbidden West OST - Aloy's Theme

https://youtu.be/0FllnTkXATI

Lovely track, I like the juxtaposition of the female human voice with mechanical instrumentation that evokes the grinding of machinery - a little on the nose but a) it works and b) what else were they going to do? Reminds me a bit of the theme for Dragon Age: Origins, which isn't a bad thing.

One neat thing about the Base music is that after each major quest (Aether, Beta, Poseidon, Demeter), some new musical element from that part of the storyline is incorporated into the track, so that by lategame you have this very lush instrumentation until the final mission where it gets stripped back down again.

Yeah, I really appreciated that the music is both modular/adaptive to the moment and yet the emotional swell always comes at exactly the right time to lead into some simple and very pretty acoustic arrangement. I also loved that that they mixed even more electronic motifs into the main tracks. It's just awesome stuff.

Guess I'll post the most earwormy tune I had last year.

Arknights - Fading Sky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_6Qxb0Iiuw

So Arknights is a gacha game, but it's also a strategy sorta-tower defense game. Every 3 months or so they throw out an event called Contingency Contract that's basically a big map with a string of mobs and a boss or two from a past event, and it has customisable difficulty in that you can turn on certain conditions like increased enemy stats, decreased unit stats, banning certain classes of unit, etc. It also always comes with a new battle theme just for that map which is almost always a bop. This tune's just the one that I love the most because its beat drops pretty much right as the bosses hit your frontline of units and you have to start executing the nuke phase of things. An incredibly perfectly timed drop that really enhances how you feel while executing your strategy.

BITCH ASS NARC

As I get older, I find less and less enjoyment from AAA games that seem to just do the same thing except 'bigger, louder, more mechanically advanced', and have been playing more indie stuff. Games that have a nice story or atmosphere. One game that really got me was Far: Changing Tides. It's a side-scrolling light puzzle game that doesn't really do anything new or exciting but it reeks of soul and atmosphere. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world that doesn't make the mistake that many other games in this setting do, that is concern itself with what happened. The apocalypse has happened and you just live in it. There is no dialogue. None is needed and there is just the hint that there is someone, somewhere far away you are scheduled/intended to find/meet/rejoin. So you leave aside your lovely flooded abode and set off into the unknown and you will let no barrier stop you as you sail through a ruined water-flooded landscape. It has simple puzzles, has zero replayability, and is probably very low in a dollar/hour sense but it is a game that I remember and will probably remember for a while.

The Edge Runner update was the update that made me finally complete the game I spent 1200 CAD for an RTX 3080 for. The gameplay remains kinda janky, like many other CDPR games, but whoever is in charge of the story direction there is still top-notch. They somehow always manage to make characters that manage to find the sweet spot between 'soulless NPC quest giver bot' and 'overly dramatic to the point of unbelievable drama queen'. I don't know how they do it but the characters feel kinda real in the movie sense. Do all the side quests, the fake people you meet are interesting and when they call you up to help them with their quests, you genuinely feel like going out of your way to see it done.

The last entry is another game that did something for me no other game really did before. A CRPG that gives you a castle/fief/kingdom......and actually has it mean something to the story and gameplay. I installed this puppy after it collected dust in my Humble Bundle catalog for years due to mixed reviews and was surprised. So many times a CRPG just hands you property as a quest reward and other than it spitting out some additional side content, it rarely does much else. The rest of the time, you are still just a grubby homeless hobo that wields a sword or fireballs and it has no bearing on the story or how people react to you in game. Kingmaker changes that. The throughline of the story is you managing the petty kingdom that you won in the opening chapter of the game. The Kingdom management and town building mini-game is admittedly jank, as is the D&D Pathfinder ruleset and wierd difficulty spikes in the game. But drat it if you don't feel like your RPG character has made it when petitioners come up to your throne room, bow and petition you with problems. Most of it is handled through the aforementioned janky minigame but occasionally, your adventuring roots mean you have to assemble your party (who double as court advisors) and stamp out kingdom-threatening issues yourself (the main storyline). It also fixes the sometimes strange dissonance with the main quest vs side quest issues some CRPG has. Since the kingdom threats (which are connected to each other plot-wise) occur in waves, there is downtime where you get to sort out these side quests without feeling weird helping some dude while the universe is about to end.

Strange year. My 3 favourite games played consist of 2 deeply flawed mechanical games that nail the feel and atmosphere right and one low value artsy game that has an incredible soul to it.

Shoutout to those who mentioned Game Pass, I finally checked it out and for $1CAD I have a month to play Citizen Sleeper, Norco, Pentiment, Signalis, and have 40+ games I could see potentially getting around to at some point. Even at the $12CAD/mo price point it's a pretty great deal if you're interested in enough of their local catalogue, my understanding is multiplayer is limited to those who also are on game pass unfortunately.

It is on Xbox gamepass. They have intro offers for like 1 dollar or something (see above post) so you can play it effectively for 1 dollar and you get to check out the best subscription service in gaming right now. As I said, zero replay value unless you want to go back and listen to the music. They somehow manage to do a lot with zero dialogue. Like your lovely boat putts along and as you solve puzzles, you scavenge fuel and parts from places you realize used to be inhabited by people who just tried their best but didn't loving make it.
