Yeah I mean the only real prism to look through actions by the league office is what maximizes revenue for the NFL with the least risk to the value of the brand. I would think there’s absolutely no way the league office is looking at that situation and telling people to continue the game given the potential long term harm to “the shield” from having to broadcast a player has died while the game he died in is still being played and broadcast.

Hell, WWE survived (and even thrived) after one of their wrestlers literally died in the ring during a Pay Per View and they continued the show.

It makes perfect sense that people who have recently been traumatized resort to things that are familiar and comfortable to cope with their feelings. There's really no playbook on what to do in a situation like this. They probably just needed to do something. Anything.

Yeah, my experience is military so obviously a football game is different context but "hey until we hear otherwise we've still got a job to do, lets do some warm-ups/run through some things/etc" is exactly the sort of thing I'd expect from a first-line leader like a team captain or QB in a situation like this. It would be something I would do, if only to get my guys out of just sitting there marinating in trauma.

I was watching on ESPN2 (flipped over when the Rose Bowl was a done deal and never switched back to ESPN), and they switched over to SVP and Ryan Clark like ESPN did. But at some point, someone decided to resume ESPN2's normal schedule and it suddenly switched to... The World Knife Throwing Championship.

Yeah I was watching via SlingTV and was not pleased when Sling's ESPN broadcast switched to that.

“Go win the Heimlich Trophy!”

I have a sneaky feeling that the actual process went like this:

- Injury and first responders scramble
- Refs notice issue and radio NY
- Middle management in NY toes the usual company line of “yeah looks bad but gotta play. Give them 5 minutes” because these are the dudes who are terrified of looking disloyal to the brass and they’re following the standing order.
- Taylor and McDermott go “lol no” after that along with the players
- Middle Management now has grounds to call their bosses and be like “we tried to get play to resume”
- Bosses, whether by having their hands forced or not, begin the company line of “cancel the game”, likely at a point where they now have plausible deniability that technically Goodell/Vincent weren’t the ones to demand play resume so they can act disturbed and surprised when they knew full well what the middle managers tried to do because this is what you use standing orders for.

Avoiding accountability, whether you’re Wells Fargo, the mob, or the NFL, is about making your middle management the enforcers so you can put on a human suit and act surprised when they do the thing you programmed them to do proper. Someone in the middle office will be hung out to dry here if they’re trotting out Vincent to do this.

It's at 4.2 million now. It's almost mesmerizing to watch it go.

Also it looks like Jordon Rooney (Damar's marketing rep) or someone updated the banner and whatnot to make it look a bit more generalist. They still haven't removed the original 2020-referring copy, likely because it's Damar's own words.

How does it work when a player is injured to the point they can't play anymore or needs ongoing treatment? Is there like an NFL insurance plan or are they just expected to fend for themselves with whatever they've made playing?

I'm pretty sure the league paid for the entirety of Shazier's treatment, which is probably the best contemporary equivalent.

There are substantial injury benefits defined in the current CBA - his salary for _this year_ would be 100% guaranteed for instance. There is an extended injury protection that can be had for subsequent years but it's cost capped (unless the player negotiated more in their contract). I couldnt' quite parse the language of the CBA but it looks like his medical and such is 100% covered, his salary for this year and the rest of his contract would be covered as well. There are caps for the salary benefit to be paid out but as a 6th round draft pick his contract wouldnt' have hit those caps anyway

Hamlin's situation is a total unknown and there are plausible circumstances that could make this game meaningless. It's smart of them to hold off on a decision.

Anybody who thought they were just going to fly Buffalo back into town today or tomorrow is dramatically underestimating the logistics involved would be my guess.

No matter what happens, that GFM has turned in to a full endowment. Hopefully once things calm down, he and/or his family can start working with a non-profit lawyer and you will likely see the Damar Hamlin Foundation as a result. Only positive to come from this.

Yeah, that thought hit me I think about the time Ryan Clark was giving SVP that "[Hypothetical "Hey y'all, Damar's fine, he just had a fart stuck" news] That news doesn't let me hug my brother, doesn't let me hold his hand, doesn't let me see him after I saw what happened. Even if he's fine, the game should be postponed" speech.

A Manningcast (Or one of the McAfeecasts for the college playoffs)... I can't imagine that going well.
