I don't think Elon Musk can be Speaker. Mostly because Speaker of the House is back-up if both the President and Vice-President dies, and Musk is not a natural-born citizen.

What I am getting from this is that Speaker Trump is a lock, and I should dump all in on Predictit?

BigRed0427 posted:Yiiikes. The current "compromise" that McCarthy had given ground on was that five congresspeople would be needed for a no-confidence resolution. The functional difference between one and five is fairly negligible -- I mean, this is a House that has Gosar, Boebert, Biggs, Gaetz and Roy in it, so there's a permanent five right there -- but insisting that it go down to one is a symbolic knife-twist. The lesson of Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema is an obvious one; when narrow majorities and being in the right numeric place at the right time give you leverage, you use that leverage and grab and twist as hard as you can. The kooks want either one of their own as Speaker, or to neuter the rules and procedures to the point where the kooks will have dramatically increased input and control over committees, amendments, investigations et al. Their only tool to gain this is this withholding of support, and it's effective; McCarthy can't climb the ladder without either their support or defecting Democrats', and the latter would be instant career suicide for both him and for those Dems. Going from nineteen to twenty, with the twentieth being the guy Chip Roy voted for in round one, isn't what I'd call a massive momentum shift. It was probably more surprising that Donalds voted McCarthy in the first two rounds. Now, if he'd gone from 19 to 39 or 59 or 79 against in later votes, that's a very different ballgame. And it still might be. The backroom screaming tonight will be interesting, because while the kooks know that they can drag this out by holding firm, the pressure on some of them to cave (whether carrot or stick) will be immense. It will be illuminating whether "knock it off, already" to the kooks or "you literally can't win, endorse someone else" to McCarthy will be the prevailing vibe.

It seems like McCarthy cares mostly about is getting speaker as his job title, so it would be a win-win if Republicans and Democrats made a deal where McCarthy is speaker but the house has to hold a vote on anything that passes the senate with a filibuster proof majority. McCarthy gets to sit at the cool speaker desk with the big kids only sign on it, Democrats get to raise the debt ceiling and pass uncontroversial things, Republicans get to block BRANDON'S SOCIALIST AGENDA (or talk about bipartisanship if Trump goes down in flames next year), the anti-McCarthy group get to grandstand about how every other republican is for BRANDON'S SOCIALIST AGENDA. I mean it's not going to happen because any Republican who joins that will lose a primary to a cartoon villain who was at 1/6, but other than that it would work out for everyone involved. He happily went MAGA went the Freedom Caucus was on the rise and Trump went up that escalator, but they're not convinced he'll be a reliable ally now that Trump's power has been shaken. And before Trump rose to power, he was heavily aligned with the old GOP leadership - including John Boehner, who was driven out of the speakership by the Freedom Caucus. And like others said, there's some value in thwarting the party's leading pick just to prove that they can. Even though they're a small faction, they intend to frequently present all sorts of demands and red lines. Showing that they're willing to openly buck the party like this makes it clear that their threats won't be empty and that their demands can't be ignored so easily.

No committees, no subpoenas, no bills, no floor speeches (maybe they can do a speech about the speaker? idk). While the Rs have been obstructionists for decades, it sounds like some of them are getting tired of it, especially since it often just doesn't work. Right now it doesn't even look like they're holding to a hard line, they just can't get their poo poo together enough to choose a leader. I imagine they could in theory pass a rules package that makes the Speaker about as important as Senate President pro-Tempore, and operates totally different from now, but that seems less likely than GOP deciding to vote for Hillary Clinton as speaker in practice
