i have a growing, irrational dislike for john mayer, because everybody likes him.

moms like him, he's recent enough that younger guitar players like him, he's a blues guy and strat guy, so boomers like him. i think he's written some great songs, and i enjoy hearing him talk about the process. he's a great guy.

but he pisses me off.

I know what you mean, I remember very strongly having convos with my guitar friends realizing he was a strat guy and really good at more than just the pop songs. The grateful dead cover stuff is pretty weird, but at the same time, I grew up in a grateful dead epicenter so it's also cool.

But I just loving hate the guy

edit: and I own a sunburst strat with a tortoise pick cover just like he did, which pisses me off. I really need to just to switch that thing to classic white before I lose my mind

I tried one of those recently, and it seemed pretty good. Sounded better than most strats I’ve tried, and felt really solid overall. The neck felt really wide to me, but that’s probably just a couple of mm of difference that I would get used to in 20 minutes.

Looks great!

Justin does a whole series on the Katana, good place to begin to learn how to dial in a sound you're looking for.

fwiw i'm not a very strat-ty player-- the trem is decked and stays decked, and i'm using the bridge jb like 80% of the time... sometimes mellow chords sound cool from the neck pickup, and sometimes the middle one sounds good for like a screaming females or sleater kinney type deal.

really, i'm mostly a punk/emo type player who took a theory class and got way into extended chords and stuff. it's all kind of a Land of Contrasts-- JB is kind of aggressive sounding, but i generally play a lot of extensions and very pretty sounding things, and i always have distortion on, but i love thin, light, feminine guitars. and i think maybe if you looked at me you wouldn't assume i like so much distortion (very thin, 5'6, very nervous/unassuming twink demeanor).

i'm kinda the opposite of a lot of guitar players. if i do any lead stuff, i rarely bend strings, and never using vibrato-- i just want the notes. i kind of play it like a piano.

Mayer is the kind of guy who, he's better looking than you and a better guitar player than you and a shitload richer than than you, the perfect example of a guy who's easy to hate. But also, you deep down get the feeling that if you ever ended up hanging out with him socially, that you'd probably end up loving the guy.

And whether THAT makes you more or less angry, you can take up with a therapist, I guess.

i think this is actually where it starts, in a weird way.

since i imprinted on people who are often laughing stocks, and got teased so much for liking them so much, i sort of have to go that far in the other direction. i can't stand people who everybody likes. no one should be liked that much.

dave grohl is a similar figure. i like some foo fighters songs. i think he's a great drummer. love his work on Songs for the Deaf. but gently caress do i hate how he's the Nicest Guy in Rock Music, and how he's someone who Just Loves Bringing The Rock, Not Concerned With Pop Nonsense... as if foo fighters weren't at their best when they were poppy, or as if nirvana wasn't an extremely poppy band.

rivers cuomo is really talented. great technical guitar player, he's got a great ear for melodies and song structure, and wrote two super influential 90s rock albums-- the bsides from which are every bit as good as stuff that made the cut. everybody thinks he's a loser. his bandmates don't really get him. weezer fans and weezer haters are near indistinguishable from each other. the outside world closes in on him any time he dares try being vulnerable again. the cosmic joke being that that he directly inspired influenced a ton of very agreeable bands, still, no one likes weezer.

What’s the absolute minimum it takes to make an electric guitar?

If I understand correctly, the basis of an electric guitar is a pickup reacting to vibrations from strings and emitting an electrical signal. Sounds like all you really need is a headstock, a fretboard, strings, a pickup, and a box to put the pickup in and hold the strings over. And the actual shape of the box doesn’t matter too much, it just looks neat with certain designs - you can saw a bunch of it off. Maybe you could even saw the fretboard in half or make it hinged.

I’m imagining just a really long fretboard with a couple pickups, which is amusing.

Third time is a charm right?
He's a great guitar player and can very easily be respected for his versatility but hated for his persona. He's wildly successful and had managed to add a lot of jazz and blues to modern pop music, and a little rock here and there. My thing with John mayer is that while you can hear his influences in his playing, his playing has a very unique sound that you can often tell it's him.

He's sort of a douchebag genius whose had relationships with beautiful women and he sounds like one of those guys who was always the awkward lanky kid in highschool jazz band growing up but then became this wildly successful cool musician and is now the next coming of Clapton easy listening rock Jesus guitarist adored by men, women, and moms alike. He can be a bit pretentious but most geniusy level people are, especially in the entertainment industry.

Easy guy to dislike but difficult not to respect his talent. I like some of his stuff but rarely the radio hits. His singing gets a little too breathy for me but some of his songs are incredibly well written and fun to listen to as a guitarist. Some are plain trash.

Dave grohl on the other hand seems like the same guy he probably was before success. His sense of humor is great and he seems incredibly genuine regardless of his music. I think he's very honest when he describes a lot of the happy accidents that lead to his success vs being some sort of cultural messiah who had it coming all along.

Interesting. I’m not gonna lie, I’m kinda tempted to get an electric guitar of my own cuz there’s a lot of tones and modulation/expression that’s just kind of a pain to program via synths. But my previous experience with acoustic guitars kinda sucked. I found it hard on my fingers both in terms of strength and in terms of wear and tear (owie), plus they’re pretty heavy to me and I’m rather weak. A guitar that’s light and easy to play would be dope, and maybe a minimalist one would be a good choice.

Though I have no idea what makes for a good beginner guitar. Kinda curious about those mini Squier guitars, they seem like good value for the money.

An electric will be easier on the fingertips than an acoustic due to thinner strings/lower action but yeah any guitar is gonna hurt your fingers for a bit until you build up callouses. Electrics will be heavier, but they're also thinner so they're slightly less unwieldy maybe?

Never handled a travel/"stick" guitar but I play mostly sitting at my desk and not having the full body shape seems like it would be annoying to try and use since it would 100% require a strap and the strap would hold all the weight vs resting it on my leg.

I've come around on Mayer - didn't like him before for similar reasons to others, but he's just too good a player and writer and genuine when talking about his craft. His singing seems to have improved, too, so it's not so nasally or whatever it was when he first started out. His songs are tons of fun for me to learn and play and they are well written and constructed. It seems like he's done the work.

I get the point about Grohl, too, but I've never found any of Foo Fighters' stuff to be anything beyond competent. Like, yeah, that's a rock song, but one that is completely forgettable the second it stops playing. Everlong is good I guess. That Sonic Highways thing he did was great because it's how I found Ft. also dave grohl having had members of sunny day real estate (and being a dick to william goldsmith) just makes me sad because sunny day real estate is such a great band that precipitated many other excellent bands, and so it's a bummer to see those guys just... in the background in foo fighters stuff, and have it impede a few SDRE reunion efforts over the years, is a huuuuge bummer

I grew up near Mayer’s hometown and know ppl who have expressed cause to dislike him (I took art lessons from one lady whose brother allegedly had some kind of guitar fight/rivalry with Mayer).

And I heard a (probably apocryphal) story about him trying to stop the demolition and replacement of a defunct store that he’d once worked at for vanity reasons. I don’t think that one’s true tho.

I think he’s mellowed out a bunch, but he used to be notoriously pretty douchey as a showbiz guy earlier in his career.

He said a bunch of really gross racist poo poo at the end of the 2000s/around 2010, but I think he’s apologized and recanted.

I’m glad Dead fans seem to have largely embraced him, he fits well in there and I hope he keeps them going for a long time.
