i checked and the collar ep was indeed an OVA so mea culpa, tho there's still several segments that just feel cruel

i watched it after it aired and crunchyroll puts it at the end of season 1 so i had no idea either. unless you look it up it's easy to not realize this.

the succubus episode also kind of sucks, but less than the collar ova. they had writing outs to make it so it's not about kazuma being weirdly forward with darkness in the bath and realizing what's happening the entire time and having her not be into some weird kink poo poo for the first time in the show that are arguably way more funny in that situation and chose to go in the boring direction that makes kazuma seem like an rear end in a top hat and doesn't really do anything with the premise.

the part of konasuba i liked the most (LN, never really got into the anime) was megumin and kazuma's romance thing going on but eventually the author in an afterword was like 'eh I'm just gonna leave this where it is, sorry' and that was a betrayal most foul.

I mean, yes but, looking at the series overall aside from certain :black101: moments which I won't spoil the tone doesn't particularly stay there fwiw... It's why I describe it as a more serious and played straight version of Bakarina, with a world that scratched the Game of Thrones itch for me back when GoT was clearly nose diving.

Are their good isekai recommendations that aren't mean-spirited power fantasies that aren't the bookworm one? Preferably ones that don't have an underlying resentment for the real world to justify the protagonist's actions in the fantasy world.

Pretty much the only isekai I really like and would freely recommend to others is Saga of Tanya the Evil.

I'm glad of it

Didn't need the romance, but Megumin's parents trying to make it happen while they stayed over was worth it

Edit: Kazuma's plan for Megumin in the last novel was kickass. What if explosion...but more

Tanya's great. I like the ways it plays out the story trope of the main character trying to avoid fate but their actions only serve to reinforce it but its more cathartic because Tanya isn't a very good person and its easy to enjoy the moments where the world only exists to take her from one frying pan and into a larger and yet less comfortable pot.

tanya was shlock but i appreciated it in the same way that i can read a trash sci fi novel and appreciate how ridiculous it is. the idea of mages flying techno-broomsticks with svt-40s is very funny

tanya was funny for how many people didn't realize the author is a titoist

dies irae is a vn that got an anime where the bad guys are nazi vampires. the first episode of the anime is from the nazi vampires' perspective. a bunch of people watched only the first episode of it and declared it a literal nazi power fantasy to the point that actual 'anime journalists' called the translator of it a nazi. internet ftw

Not gonna lie but this is the part that turned me off. Not anything about politics or fascism or titoism. I just did not care for the premise of "smug anime girl with the mind of a sociopath does World War 1" and didn't feel like pursuing it any further.

i can't ever actually put my finger on it but something about the wrap-up of the dimple arc always left me feeling like i hadn't had a big enough dinner. like the buildup to it with the town getting increasingly weird is good but something just doesn't land in the end

it doesnt get bad but the animation quality keeps going down and theres a hilarious bit in s3 where one of the side characters gets transported to fantasy mmo china and has an entire adventure there that takes up a volume of the LNs, but for some reason the anime didnt adapt any of it so he just reappears 10 episodes later talking about people and adventures the audience never saw until it gets a very brief recap

dimple arc kinda felt like they needed to do something with that broccoli at some point and was really really overshadowed by the resolution of the show's central conflict of mob v mob at the end imo
