I think I’ll just have someone swap the pickups around on my HSS Strat once I get a price on it. I know that if you buy custom pickups they’re usually neck/bridge specific, how much does that matter because buying new pickups is even more expensive?

Bucker single buckers are super common, but I don’t think I’ve seen a SSH. If it’s only the pickup orientation you’re looking for and not body style, there are some options for a tele.

Not really, bridge pickups are usually wound cooler since the strings' vibrations have a wider amplitude the closer you get to the center. Hums are already usually hotter than singles so you'll probably want the pickup height to be really low on the neck and pretty high at the bridge and middle to compensate.

landgrabber, have you dug into Andy Summers yet? He took his years of jazz/classical experience and tried making a punk/reggae sound that eventually found its groove and made The Police the world's biggest rock band for awhile. I can't think of any bends that I've done in their songs, and I've never seen any guitarists use as many inversions and funky chord voicings as he does. They're so much better than just Roxanne and Every Breath You Take that the collective public knows them for.

Yeah I think I’ll just take them to the music shop and have them swapped around someday. I just early on had a strat and lived on the bridge and then when I got a Les Paul lived on the neck, so I naturally want the single at the bridge and the humbucker at the neck. Alternatively I could go back in time and not sell the Les Paul to make rent.

getting way off topic but god the drums in roxanne sound so good. amazing how so many 70s rock albums had excellent sounding drums, and then in just a few short years you would have the worst rock drum sound of all time on every major 80s rock album, where the drummer would hit the snare and it would reverberate for like seven years

ethanol posted:tbf what the poster describes does sound just like a setup issue. for what its worth im still looking for the same fender model without the qc problems. I can't tell you how many misaligned necks i've seen at this point.. but it's a.. lot.. and that's just something you can see right away in the pictures. my rule for buying new fenders at this point is use sweetwater or a shop that you absolutely know will take it back if you find a qc issue. To give fender a little credit, my friend's wife has a cream-colored american-made strat from the 80s that is an absolute knockout. When I took it out of its case to play it for the first time, I was expecting to be like "meh. another strat." but no... it had a powerful and irresistible vibe to it. Something about how they got all the little details just right, and it all comes together. So certainly, Fender can make (and has made) excellent guitars. But as you point out, you might get a lemon! And no matter how often that happens, people will still want to buy Fenders. It could be that there's some specific design choices that Fender makes, which you can't find anywhere else, but I find it hard to believe. On the other hand, if you know exactly what you want, and know how to get it, and don't mind wading thru some B-stock crap along the way... respect, and good luck to you.

I have an American Tele that I got off of Sweetwater and an American Strat from Reverb and they're both fantastic, well-sorted guitars that sound and feel a little nicer than the Squier/Mexican equivalents I've played. The handful of Squier Classic Vibes and Contemporaries I've touched have been pretty well-sorted, as well as the PRS SEs. I had a used PRS S2 McCarty that was a dealer special order so it had an ebony board and a stunning quilted maple top. It was probably the best guitar from a factory fit and finish standpoint I've ever played, but it was very dark sounding guitar and I did not get along with the pattern vintage neck at all. Wanted something to sit between the Tele and my super strats for classic rock/hard rock sounds, but it honestly sounded best downtuned as a doom metal guitar. Ended up selling it and I'm still kind of hunting for the Les Paulish guitar I end up bonding with. The closest thing was an Edwards Explorer copy with a JB/59 combo that was pretty great, but the Explorer shape didn't really get along with my bum right shoulder. I think the tl;dr is that any mass-produced item made of wood is going to have some studs and some duds, but I'd hazard PRS is more up with QC than Fender.

I tried out the PRS S2 Vela today, the satin version. Really nice guitar and the price is knocked down to £900 from somewhere around £1600 retail, although I don't think I'd ever have to pay that much. If I was in work right now I think I'd go for it but whist I have money for a while I can't help but think I shouldn't go for it right now. I'd also like to see the non-satin finish, which does look a little nicer in pictures, or the semihollow although opportunities for that seem scarce. Also the satin neck meant you could feel the wood grain under your hand in a way I've not come across, not necessarily a problem, but I'd like to feel the gloss one for comparison. Do you folks have a process you go through when considering a major guitar purchase, when you're pushing a grand and beyond? I should probably hold off anyway, but do you wait for a great price to come along etc? I feel like I'd want to handle at least an example of the model before ordering, and ideally be able to try the one I'd be buying.

It's a bit odd. I'd love to try a G&L laquer fretboard at some point but it's kinda hard to find locally. But this is all insane high end nitpicky stuff taht definitely doesnt apply to a player strat vs a prs. ethanol fucked around with this message at 02:52 on Jan 5, 2023 |

With a hardshell case I'd vote the j mascis if it's in good shape. You figure hs case is an added $100-200 value depending on the brand.

These might be a niche set up request but is there a way I can use my Katana to listen on headphones to my guitar and me singing into a mic? How do we feel about buying guitars off eBay? I've seen a deal for just what I want, I've played the model and they say it's a few months old with only some mild home use. With eBay's buyer protections such as they are am I going to be alright? I guess I'm just worried about FOMO, could well be I will always be about to find these prices if I look.
