This is a miscalculation on her part.

I lived in Anchorage and R&D coalitions do work in Alaska, but it's because Alaska has its own identity separate from the lower 48, so national parties don't matter as much as someone's reputation.

That's not something you can just drop in and automatically make work in the U.S. Congress.

I’m sure it helps build her reputation back in Alaska though

With the 11th vote already doomed for Kevin, there will necessarily be a 12th vote-- maybe even tonight! At that point, this speaker election will be tied for fifth in number of ballot rounds (with the 17th Congress in 1821). The next milestone after that is 22 rounds (the 16th Congress, 1819).

A lot of the really bad ones are right around the end of a major party system; the two I just mentioned were harbingers of the death of the First Party System ~1824. So that's definitely a good sign

Only if a majority of House members agree to it, which lol no. See:

House Practice: A Guide to the Rules, Precedents and Procedures of the House posted:

The resolution is debatable for one hour.
The resolution is not subject to amendment unless the previous

Can you imagine spending all that time and money campaigning first to pass through primary, then the actual election, then wait for the results to slowly come as you are exhausted. Then you realise that you WON, yippee! Time to prepare for your big opportunity in the capitol, making big decisions with important people! Everyone is congratulating you and wishing you luck.

Then the big day comes and... you get treated to this hell. And you realise that this is how the next years will go, constant friction and infighting and public ridicule. :smithicide:

Ok, so, this is in total Calvinball/No Rule that Says Dogs Can't Play Basketball territory, BUT IF

1. The clerk refuses to call the names of six Republican congresscritters-elect during roll after the next adjournment when business starts for the day
2. The Dems go along with this oversight
3. The clerk refuses to entertain motions or objections from the floor about the un-recognized aforesaid members and calls for a roll call vote for Speaker
4. The Dems go along with the vote and, having the majority of those recognized present, elect Jeffries speaker
5. Assuming no Republicans have at this point drawn guns and started shooting or started reenacting 1/6/21 (a dicey proposition at best), the duly-elected Speaker Jeffries swears in all members of Congress save the aforementioned six unrecognized/named etc Congresspersons, giving him a majority of acting members of the House, at which point they pass whatever rules they see fit and presumably at this point order the Capitol Police to escort the interlopers from the building. They should also barricade the building and call out the DC National Guard because hoo nellie poo poo's gonna hit the fan.

A shoot out in the House Chamber between members over rules fuckery would be the most American thing Congress has ever done.

Edit: Almost any situation where we end up with Speaker Jeffries almost certainly involves enough time or votes to pass rules to prevent Republicans for calling for a new vote though.
