Top Secret! wasn’t well received at the time for some reason but it’s hilarious and also has some legit really good songs in it.

The average adult German male is 5'10.5", among the tallest in the world. Finding a more diminutive member of this population could be more difficult.

Tar is a hella good movie and it feels like it only lasted about 90 minutes when it’s actually 2 hours 40

I hope it comes back to theaters for the Oscars, I wanna see it.

TAR is gonna go down as one of the greats. It's got the right combination of magnificent direction, cinematography, and acting and more text and subtext to digest than most people can stomach in one viewing.

Gonna join the Tar is Good chorus. Feels like much more than just a movie of the season, if anything I'm surprised something that structurally challenging is catching on (though I don't want to overstate it, for film people I think it's straight forward enough, but it definitely moves in unconventional ways).

I didn't much care for Tár, but moreso because the cancel culture/non-binary student strawman cringiness. It was very well made and acted, and I can see why people liked it a bunch. On the other hand, Saint Omer was absolutely my favourite film of the year and I'm super stoked to rewatch it and make everyone come with me when it comes to TIFF. It took me a bit to figure out what it was doing in the courtroom scenes and warm up to it, but it absolutely staggered me. Everyone should see it. Jessica Kiang wrote about it really well https://variety.com/2022/film/reviews/saint-omer-review-1235361516/

This was absolutely the worst part of TÁR—the student character felt totally inauthentic—no student at Julliard would be totally incapable of talking about Bach, for Christ’s sake. It’s still my favorite movie of the year, because of, I think, almost literally every other scene in the movie, but that bit’s very clumsy. While we’re talking about TÁR, an interpretive question for those who’ve seen it: what do you think of the massage parlor/brothel scene at the end? Did she know what she was asking the concierge for? It seems like no, but come on, you’re a white tourist asking for a massage in SE Asia. What are we to take from the vomiting? Is it regret or just disgust? Is there a difference?

I think she consciously was just looking for a massage, but subconsciously wanted to get laid. The fact that the girl she chose was in the same place that her Russian Soloist was in her orchestra made her realize that she was falling right back into her same self destructive habits. Question, how important is it to see Au Hasard Balthasar before EO. My local theatre finally got it's head out it's rear end and stopped playing nothing but Christmas movies and putting in some real poo poo. But it's only showing is tomorrow, and I have to wonder if I should watch Balthasar tonight and then another donkey movie the next day, is this too much donkey?

I remember getting very worried for the film during that scene, it's certainly the weakest moment but I understand why it's critical to the rest of the story (just to establish Tar's attitude if nothing else). I think part of it was that kid was just not a good actor (even his leg tapping felt like an overly exaggerated version of the habit, which I've been guilty of doing myself). But yeah, it absolutely needed another polish during the script phase, maybe start with not namedropping every single online buzzword. But everything else in the movie is near perfect so I forgive it.

It’s still my favorite movie of the year, because of, I think, almost literally every other scene in the movie, but that bit’s very clumsy. My interpretation is that she was unaware. The whole movie hinges on her isolation from the consequences of her actions, and her increasing confrontation with the protests/ghost of the student she pushed to suicide causes her to end up there. She's then confronted with the most naked depiction of her transactional relationships and thus epiphany and vomiting I also wasn't a huge fan of the movie's depiction of SE Asia or her hometown. While it's from her perspective, it also feels like the movie is being derogatory with the editing choices. Art cinema! Also speaking of odd arthouse choices, the new Castaing-Taylor/Paravel, De Corporis Humanis Fabrica, is incredible (Caniba was too rough and evil for me). Follows the delightfully visceral day of a French hospital. It also introduced me to the fact that a bunch of Parisian hospitals have absurdly misogynistic explicit orgy murals in their break rooms as holdovers from machismo doctor culture. https://medium.com/tryangle-magazine/the-secret-pornographic-tradition-french-hospitals-dont-want-you-to-know-81f53063b8f1
