Lil Gator Game was released today, by the person who made A Short Hike. I've played about an hour and am really enjoying it so far.

From what I understand A Short Hike was by Adam Robinson-Yu with music by Mark Sparling, and from his website https://adamgryu.com/ he's working on https://adamgryu.itch.io/paper-game right now, so I don't think he's involved in this

However I look forward to the future forum arguments what is and isn't a hikelike

You might have confused "is like" with "made by" there.

Oh wow. Yes, I got confused. I remember looking at his real next game before, which also features alligators, and got confused. Lil Gator is very much a hike-like too. To the point that I was a little surprised that they'd make some things so similar to the first game. But, it turns out it's just someone completely different making an extremely similar game...

Regardless, it's fun and sweet.

I've seen one other game using the A Short Hike art style, Paradise Marsh. It's practically becoming a sub-genre like "Sonic-like" and "Portal-like"

the trailers struck me as "this should be a game solely for children but it's being marketed to adults for some reason" which is sort of how I feel about a lot of games that present under the "Wholesome Games" moniker

It is good if children do play them, because there does need to be more games for younger children so there's more options than just Roblox. though I don't know how you can really market an indie game to parents or kids... no indie dev's gonna have the money to advertise on Nickelodeon or anything. i guess you'd have to rely on collabing with streamers that are popular with kids?

This seems accurate. It reminds me of Alba, which is another wholesome, charming game that I played a few hours of but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to finish because it's really for kids.

I liked Alba a lot and while it's VERY simple, kid-friendly gameplay, I think I just really enjoyed zooming around the island and completing the animal guide. Sometimes it's nice to just take pictures of birds and confound an evil real estate prick.

I skipped like half a second through the steam trailer and everything from the games visual design, animation, font choice, music choice, actual phrases used are for kids. Don't see how you can get from that one to "marketed to adults"? Have not seen other trailers though, maybe they're different.

Alba is in an different place here as it is a Serious Game promoting environmental care and real world knowledge about animals and how most birds sound terrible and not just entertainment.

Sail Forth
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1031460/Sail_Forth/

quote:

Sail a fleet of customizable ships across an ocean whose ancient depths have swallowed the key to the mysterious past. Befriend fishfolk to expand your boat crews, take up arms against petulant pirates, and chart a course across an expansive watery world. Will you answer the call of High Adventure?

I had this one on my wishlist for the longest time hoping it would be a sailboat version of Sky Rogue, and it finally came out. I'm not sure the world is actually procedurally generated in this one, but that doesn't matter as it's plenty varied enough. The sailing mechanics are really relaxing, and the game is only as hectic as you want it to be. You can totally avoid the enemy pirate ships if you want to. Upgrades and fleet expansion come rapidly, both from boarding and taking over enemy ships and from accumulating spare wood (the in-game currency) to spend at the boat-upgrade stores. I'm less than 6 hours in and already have the biggest ship available from the initial upgrade list, and probably could have gotten it sooner than that if I had focused.

There are a few rough edges; the companion ship AI is not great and doesn't always have your back in a fight. If you have excess crew "below deck," sometimes their stats will disappear and they will become unselectable (and so far, there's not a great variety in crew stats anyway). You can treat it like an open world, but there will be brief loading screens when transitioning between island areas. This is bad because it briefly breaks immersion, but also good because it resets your companion fleet into position right next to you; otherwise they will oftentimes get left behind if you are sailing directly to the next island instead of fast-traveling.

I'm glad I picked it up and hopeful that the dev will invest additional effort post-launch. I can see myself coming back to this one for a long time to come.

It's a first-person exploration game where you can pick up and hold one item at a time. Your goal is to get a train ticket and leave the city of BABBDI. Your real goal is actually to look around and find all of the different secret items/collectibles hidden everywhere around the map.

Items range from a flashlight to a trumpet that doots depending on how high or how low you're holding, to a pickaxe that lets you scale any vertical surface to a :krad: motorbike

It's not very long, it's not very deep, you can probably beat it all in an hour or two. But it is free :homebrew:

Just a word of warning the game progression is not very flexible. You either do it the right way or you bleed out quite quickly. I dont mind trying and failing and trying again. I do like the story part and aesthetics.
