James Garfield posted:Anything that passes the senate with 60 votes (like a clean debt ceiling increase) would easily pass a house vote, but the freedom caucus want changes that would let them stop the vote from happening Right. To me it seems like the Dems should just call the bluff and pass a Senate bill and play chicken. The Republicans seem like they have a much weaker hand here since they're just as or more invested (well, most of them) in avoiding the stock market taking a big dump and bond rates increasing if US debt gets downgraded. Like I just can't imagine a world where billionaires and the Chamber of Commerce aren't calling up and screaming to just pass a bill and Republicans are way more beholden to this crowd.

Did the right-wing nutters get their "no confidence vote" enforcement mechanism along with their demand that the debt ceiling be held hostage?

Looks like what's left of the holdouts have regrouped and made their blood pact. Will be interesting to see if Trump can flip the ones needed.

I mean, we won't know until we see what's actually in the rules for the new Congress, but McCarthy's probably castrated himself quite thoroughly to get to this point. It remains to be seen if he can find enough remaining scrotum to slice off to appease the rest.

If I was McCarthy, this is where I'd bring out the stick - anyone who doesn't vote for me when I win doesn't get any committee seats. Edit: honestly I'm kind of wondering if McCarthy had even thought about making threats.

Youth Decay posted:https://twitter.com/BrianKarem/status/1611440989582856203 Sounds like the Dems being cute and trying to blow up the newly established fragile McCarthy coalition. Question: If the rules package needs to be written and then voted on, and that all takes place AFTER McCarthy is made speaker, why would Perry and the rest trust that any of these extreme concessions that McCarthy is making would actually go through? McCarthy wouldn't even have to stab them in the back personally, if the rules package with all their crazy poo poo in it fails, he's Pontius Pilate, it's not on him that the rest of the party is reluctant to adopt a rules package that could've been written by the Joker.
