Forgot to post this after I wrote it up yesterday, but good job I did because a couple of cards that had been listed TBA got confirmed, so that's handy. Not Dragongate though, so we're back to the peak of the pandemic era which sucks. Anyway, we're heading out of the crazy period although Monday is quite busy as it's a public holiday in Japan. Probably the biggest shows of the week are the Dragongate Korakuen Hall double header, with a unit disbands match one night (even one with a pretty obvious result) & then a Dream Gate match the next, & Yuki Yoshioka vs Shun Skywalker has a high floor, this should be MOTYC, no doubt. But else where there's a DDT show (not live sadly) featuring a match where if the Sanshiro Takagi side wins they get the rights to explosion matches from Onita & if they lose then the guy who pinned gets the job of the guy who got pinned. So Toi Kojima as Cyberfight President if he pins Takagi, or Onita working at the DDT-owned bar if he pins Takao. A properly DDT stipulation. NOAH have a shuffle tag tournament of their own, with Kongo members teaming with home team members. GLEAT have another G-REX title match with El Lindaman defending against the winner of a battle royal.

Weird card, but interesting stuff going into the new year.

The match series mains have routinely been really fun. There's also a cheer crowd in Mie for a house show on 1/9, which will have Diamante & ISHIN vs Nagano & Kato. Hoping that match makes it onto the free Youtube digest.

Since DG is merged back here I guess I’ll shill Case and my coverage again lol. He just dropped the authoritative guide to Dragongate’s last year and looking ahead to this weekend’s season kickoff.

https://twitter.com/voiceswrestling/status/1611388465890959360?s=46&t=u5tJ5B7s-V_qqYVyW1s_jQ

Part of this was addressing Dave Meltzer’s haphazard and incorrect reporting. Since before his first NOSAWA-tinged Observer, we’ve been vigorously on top of this situation. Case released the fake Kaito Ishida email as a part of this article. I went into our process with this and more into how the sausage was made in a thread:

https://twitter.com/fujiiheya/status/1611425982300229642?s=46&t=u5tJ5B7s-V_qqYVyW1s_jQ

Anyways this weekend’s shows look really promising. It’s nice to do feature matches to kick off the year and not burning title matches in small venues or having made up tourneys (save rookie ranking leagues).

Decided to not add Wrestle Kingdom 17 to my ever increasing backlog of NJPW stuff I need to watch "some day" and instead watched it "today". This was my first full NJPW show in probably 20 years.

Overall thoughts / impressions: the sound mixing on NJPW shows is weird as hell, awful even. You can barely hear the audiencem, and not just because they're quiet. Even when they're popping it's just such a muted sound which makes the show feel duller than it is, and the entrance themes also sound awful since they're apparently just recorded from the house mics rather than a direct feed? To finish the trifecta, the commentators also sound like you're watching a pirate video someone dubbed in their bedroom. Then again the actual commentary was also on that level so it worked on a meta level.

The pacing of the show also felt rushed from the perspective of someone who is used to AEW stuff. The previous match participants were still walking out when boop, here come the next guys. Not hating on it, just weird not to have lengthy talking head segments or any video recaps of the feud between matches with the exception of the main event.

Overall it was what I vaguely remember NJPW shows being back in the day. The highs were high, but the overall event was surprisingly low key for what is their biggest show of the year. If I didn't know that Wrestle Kingdom is the NJPW top show, I wouldn't have guessed it watching. For a four hour+ show most of the matches felt extremely short and almost all of them could've benefited from more time, but I guess that's what happens when you devote like an hour and a half to two matches on a seven match card.

Lio Rush / Yoh vs TJP / Akira. Fun little match, but didn't get as much time as I would've liked to see. Kinda weird that Rush is now wrestling in NJPW after quitting the pro wrestling industry about 60 times, but Rush is gonna Rush. I'm glad he's wrestling somewhere, because he's just too god drat good not to be doing this.

KAIRI vs Tam Nakano for the IWGP Women's World Championship. A good match but again didn't get enough time. Stiff shots, good chemistry and Kairi still has the best elbow drop in the business. Would've loved to see a much longer match from these two.

Kairi's entrance theme sounded especially bad here, it might be weirdly low energy in general but the NJPW sound mixing sure didn't help. The Mercedes Moné spot after the match fell flat as a pancake for me. She had an insanely good look, but then that botched weird DDT and that bad promo, and standing around... uhh.

Tag Titles: a big letdown. Some good spots but never felt like it really got past first gear. Bishamon didn't really do anything for me, and based on this match I don't get the hype surrounding them. Then again, if this was the only FTR match I had seen, I also wouldn't understand why they were probably the best tag team in 2022 so maybe this was just an off day for everyone?

Zack Sabre Jr vs. Ren Narita. Another drat good match. I love strong style stuff and we had plenty of it on offer here. Stiff kicks and elbow shots, and I loved the finish. Just a lightning fast submission out of nowhere which makes for a welcome change from the "nobody submits, everyone just passes out in submission holds" stuff people are doing these days.

Tama Tonga vs Sour Boy. I liked the ring crew and announcer ducking out of way for Karl Anderson's machine gun miming. Other than that this was something you might see on WWE Main Event, which is also where you'll probably mostly be seeing Karl Anderson in the future.

Keiji Muto's Last NJPW Match. Decent for what it was, but mostly it made me appreciate how good Sting's run in AEW has been.

Four way for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight. Why does Master Wato have a big-rear end bedbug symbol on his entrance outfit? Why is Takahashi dressed as a beholder peacock? At least El Desperado is here to ground me as a cool wrestling skeleton.

The match itself was fun, but suffered from the problem of most four ways: just isolated spots of everyone hitting their poo poo, and then switching around for the next guy to hit their poo poo with little connective tissue. Many of the spots were great though, like the combination powerbomb / avalanche suplex, and Wato hitting one of the sickest German Suplexes I've seen.

Kenny Omega vs Will Ospreay. Holy gently caress Kenny's entrance. I can't believe they got One Winged Angel for his entrance theme. Hell of a match by two of the top guys in the world right now. Such a great match from start to finish with a ton of cool spots ("Heeere's Kenny!") and both guys beating the poo poo out of each other from the start, but still building logically to a crescendo. Just a brutal match, so good. Legit MOTY contender.

Don Callis was also great on commentary. "He dropped the ball! People didn't even cheer for him", lol.

Okada vs Jay White. Aside from Omega vs Ospreay, Okada was the reason I bought the show. The dude won me over at Forbidden Door, what can I say? Much like I'm sure everyone else in the world I was going "lol good luck following the last match", and this was definitely different. Not bad, but different.

It was actually fun to get such contrasting styles in back to back matches! One match just loving brutal poo poo from the start, the main event with a slower and more gradual build. This was what my mental image of a NJPW main event is and while it wasn't as good as the previous match, it was still a drat fine match. As someone who hasn't seem too many Okada matches, his drop kicks and lariats are so loving crisp and good. He gets insane airtime on the kicks and hits the lariats so well, of course it also helps that Jay was selling like a motherfucker.

Best match? Well there's only one guy called the Best Bout Machine and he lived up to his name.

Practically nothing since the change of the millennium. I have not seen the Okada/Omega series, I always understood that they kind of build on one another and it doesn't make sense to just watch the last one because what makes it so great are the callbacks to their earlier matches, so I never got around to it. But that does sound like a good starting place!

Definitely watch the Okada/Tanahashi series in that case then as well (make sure you watch Okada's terrible Tokyo Dome debut first).

Okada vs Tanahashi is probably where to start. But do you intend to continue watching New Japan? Coz if so I'd focus more on recommendations around the current important wrestlers so you can get an idea of who is who & all that. If not then just fire into Okada vs Tana (you probably don't need to watch their last 2 matches, that was mostly wrapped up by end of 2018), Okada vs Omega series, stuff like Shibata vs Okada from 2017 (yes, the match that ended Shibata's career is still one of the all-time great pro-wrestling matches), Tana vs Suzuki from KOPW 2012, Golden Lovers vs Young Bucks from March 2018, any of a hundred Ishii matches, be it against Shibata, Omega, Goto, Suzuki, Honma, Nakamura, Naito, Ibushi, Naito, Takagi, Taichi, he's an absolute machine.

Where as if you intend to keep up with NJPW (& you should, it's very good & posting with goons is nice & chill & fun) then focus more on the dudes at the top of the cards & still active. So still Okada but also Takagi, Takahashi, Desperado, El Phantasmo, ZSJ, Ospreay, Taichi. Watch Hiromu Takahashi vs Will Ospreay and vs Dragon Lee (skip the one in the US where Hiromu breaks his neck though...) to get an idea of "why is Takahashi dressed as a beholder peacock?" for example. (The answer is only that "he's Hiromu Takahashi", which doesn't really help) Watch Shingo Takagi take the company by storm since his debut, with amazing performances as both a Junior Heavyweight & Heavyweight. The reason to watch 2021 New Japan. Honestly, you could just pick any G1 from the last decade, look at the top rated matches on Cagematch for that tournament & go buck wild with 10-15 amazing wrestling matches. Same is basically true for BOSJ too.

Also this Noah tag tournament is really great so far.

That seems painfully underwhelming for the Dome

Okada vs Tanahashi is probably where to start. But do you intend to continue watching New Japan?

I do. I've wanted to get into it for ages, and especially hard after Forbidden Door.

Thanks for the recommendations!

If you more recent match, FTR/Aussie Open from Royal Quest earlier this year was easily FTRs best match for New Japan and second only to the third Briscoes match as FTRs best last year

For a four hour+ show most of the matches felt extremely short and almost all of them could've benefited from more time, but I guess that's what happens when you devote like an hour and a half to two matches on a seven match card.
You have to understand that we had 3 2-day Wrestle Kingdoms in a row and they suffered from bloated match lengths (Jay vs Ibushi almost went for an hour and it absolutely didn't have to), I kinda prefer this layout more. Women's match needed to be longer though, I agree.

Got spoiled on yesterday's GLEAT show scrolling through twitter and now i'm a bit confused over the choice to have Ishida win the belt through a Rumble the show immediately after he lost his conventional challenge

The pacing of the show also felt rushed from the perspective of someone who is used to AEW stuff. The previous match participants were still walking out when boop, here come the next guys. Not hating on it, just weird not to have lengthy talking head segments or any video recaps of the feud between matches with the exception of the main event.

Bit late, but I absolutely love this about the promotions I watch. When I was watching the AEW after WK i kept wishing they would stop talking and just get to the next match already because i'm so used to match match match with backstage interviews something I seek out

I watched SmackDown a few weeks ago to see WALTER v Ricochet and there were three matches in two hours

But yeah, if I had to choose it would be Japanese style

Yeah, this is dumb 50/50 booking and I'm surprised they did it. I guess they wanted Lindaman to stay looking strong all through 2022? Then they can have a rubber match later? Good for Kickboy anyway, but he should've just won it at Ver.4 instead.

GLEAT result explanation Ishida is from Osaka and is a local draw. DG did this for years with him. Still think this is incredibly dumb but this promotion shouldn’t exist sooooo

I'm glad GLEAT exists, it gives me an easy place to watch Hartley Jackson and cool UWF style matches.

It also gave us Soma Watanabe getting exposed in a kickboxing match but no promotion is perfect

1/9 DG house show in Mie (card changed because Diamante's resting a knee issue)
D'Courage vs. Shimizu/Jason/SMJ
ISHIN vs. Nagano
KAI/Hulk/HYO) vs. Dragon Kid/Yoshida/Mondai

1/11 Korakuen:
① 6 Man: Strong Machine J, Jason Lee, Jacky “Funky” Kamei vs. Naruki Doi, Eita, Punch Tominaga
② Singles: Big Boss Shimizu vs. Kaito Nagano
③ 8 Man: M3K vs. Ultimo Dragon, Genki Horiguchi, Kenichiro Arai, Konomama Ichikawa
④ Tag: Kzy & Yoshiki Kato vs Don Fujii & Shuji Kondo
⑤ 6 Man: D'courage vs Gold Class
⑥ Losing Unit Disbands: High-End Alliance vs. Z-Brats
⭐︎All available members of both sides will participate
⭐︎Match format to be decided

No idea if Kagetora is healthy enough yet to be in the main, but the "all available members" thing means we can probably rule out SBK, Diamante, and possibly Shun if he's still in LA. Wonder if they'll put Kato over Fujii since they've only had him beat low-card guys and rookies so far.
