vyelkin posted:coming into the hosed up things americans do thread to declare a fatwa on negative numbers there's a germ of a good point in that as far as scientific discourse is concerned you really shouldn't be using negative numbers when discussing deltas because it just gets confusing, i.e., if there was a change from (-10) C to (+15) C, then you refer to it as a delta of 25 kelvin, but that still means fahrenheit is the hosed-up outlier because there's already a way to deal with that issue with celsius

If a country was using a scale with absolute zero they could get smug about it but afaik none do, everyone just uses something arbitrary that made sense at the time of invention for whatever reason and stuck around due to convenience. they make posts like this

It's for telling us about the weather, so freezing point is a very useful thing to structure it around for the vast majority of people and how they engage with it. Kelvin is good for certain science situations. Fahrenheit's freezing point of a specific brine (???) is not useful or relevant to anything.

I know it's a funny internet term but goddamn, spend 30 minutes in there trying to buy a gift of... Lily® Sugar 'n Cream® Solid Yarn | Hobby Lobby and you'll feel it. I was a 90s kid so I understand the low-key energy of these yarn stores but it is tremendously magnified, and unashamedly in your face which (I hope) makes it uniquely American.
