The origin story of the head (or one of them) is indeed hilarious.

He's also cool cos he's a fat, sweetie loving elephant who rides on a rat. What's not to like.

No but loving was involved.
Spoiling an very old story.
Ganesha was the child of Shiva and Parvati. One day Parvati was bathing and Shiva seeing her nakedness got very horny indeed, like a good son Ganesha tried to prevent his father from having his way with her. Furious Shiva cut his head off. This made Parvati sad so to keep the peace Shiva went and got an elephant head to replace the one he'd removed.
An alternative version is that Shiva thought Ganesha was too pretty so he replaced his head with an elephants and made him fat. Thanks Dad!

:argh:

my actual personal favorite version of the story goes exactly the same up until Ganesh keeps his dad (who he doesn't recognize at this point, because hindu gods are often dumbasses on the tier of greek and norse mythology) out of the bathing spring, whereupon Shiva casually decapitates him, as you do, and goes in to chat with his wife

"oh hey husband, good to see you back. How's our son doing on security?" "our... uh, he's doing great, but it occurs to me that I forgot to turn off the stove and put the cat in the dishwasher, be right back"

*calls up all his dudes* "alright, guys, this is both very important and incredibly secret

i need a head for a head transplant IMMEDIATELY, and it has to be on the down low"

Ten minutes later: "see, wife? good as new!"

Thought Mr Mills is into Hindu mysticism not Buddhist. He has more recently agreed that he was a twat about it all fwiw. Kula Shaker may be somewhat bland but not aggressively bad enough to be shite imo.

Genuinely sorry :( I was a bit out of sorts when I posted (going to a funeral today yay!) and misread the room.

Aye, Mills was doing Hindu, as you say, AND saying he was a Buddhist at the same time back then. The "twat about it" apology was what I meant about the rapidly walking it back. Probably didn't help that his previous band played an event where there were right wing anti-semitic speakers.

Really Madcats

The Ganesh story I know (learnt from amar chitra katha comics, so obviously definitive) is that Parvati was having a bath when Shiva wanted to bother her. Her handmaidens went doing a great job of persuading him to gtfo, so she created Ganesh to act as a bouncer.

When Shiva turned up again, Ganesh struck him and sent him on his way. Shiva got mad, so he called up his disciples and Nanda, and sent them to deal with Ganesh.

The kid is holding his own quite well, but Parvati is getting pissed off by all the noise, so creates/summons Kali and Durga (who are incarnations of her) and tells them to help out.

With his disciples being utterly mullered, Shiva takes to the field again, and this time beheads Ganesha.

Parvati comes out, goes ballistic on him, and tells him to fix this.

Cue elephant head.

Another Ganesh story is the reason he has a broken tusk. The sage Vyasa, chronicler of the Mahabharata said he was ready to have it written down, but once he'd started to tell it, he wasn't going to stop.

This would require a divine scribe to transcript it. Ganesh agreed to do it, and started taking notes. At some point his pen broke, so he snapped off a tusk to use as a pen.

The comments on that thread provide some of the details, but from what I remember:

- there weren't kids at Auschwitz

- the book invites you to feel for the plight of the kid of a Nazi commandant, which is something like the novelistic equivalent of that joke about yer grandad dying in WW2 because they fell out of the guardtower

Not just porn, 'extreme porn' which thanks to changes in the law from a few years ago could range anywhere from spanking to BDSM to russian rape porn.

It doesn't bode well because pornrapeman, IIRC, decided to blame the porn for being a corrupting influence on his otherwise innocent and pure soul. Or maybe that was the guy who bought porn on his virgin media account and claimed it on expenses. Or tractor porn guy. There's been so many!

It's the namesake for pajamafication, telling stories to make liberal oppressors feel less bad rather than comfort the oppressed or address an injustice.

I couldn't tell you, having never read the book nor watched the film but I do think kids (& tbh adults too sometimes) aren't always the best at differentiating between works of historical fiction & something like Anne Frank's Diary. A cursory look at an article on the topic (https://gcedclearinghouse.org/sites/default/files/resources/The%20boy%20in%20the%20striped%20pyjamas.PDF) suggests the book implies that people outside those directly involved in the camps were unaware of the horrors, which is generally regarded as either untrue or only true because people were deliberately revelling in their ignorance of what was directly in front of them.

If you did it in IDK, media studies or something & explicitly point out the differences between reality & fiction, that seems one thing, but a teacher would have to be explicit in that (age-dependent)

Honestly though, I just think an opera featuring a line “Why is that fence there? Why is that fence there?” is pretty funny in a gross kind of way. Maybe this is my own prejudices but I'm not really sure how you do musical theatre on a subject like the Holocaust without trivialising something of this magnitude of tragedy. Because musicals are inherently silly.

I think Boyne just wanted to make a gentle story about childhood innocence with this sort of horrific background for dramatic irony or whatever. But he was not the right guy for the job and his presumably good intentions don't really matter for poo poo based against the weird choices he makes and his hubris for plowing ahead with. And then he kinda shat all over himself on Twitter defending it/himself.

It's weird though, because he has some other books where he is a lot more nuanced and sophisticated, I guess when he sticks to topics he had a more personal understanding of.

That's the kind of "wrong, but very specifically wrong" that literary historians in 100 years will love if we've somehow still remembered those books and forgotten Zelda and still have a society by then.

People don't get "written off", the DWP won't let that happen which is why they keep tormenting people who are clearly not fit for work, so it is hard to parse the idea of adding more DWP psychos to every facet of life to hound people who have had to disengage from jobseeking because it's too loving miserable, as anything other than a threat.
