The word was out there for a few days that Ukraine was going to try some symbolic counter offensive to re-take Soledar, you would think that the fact that the Russians were expecting it would dissuade the Ukrainian leadership but that's never really stopped Ukraine before.. I think it's part buying into their own myth of absolute Ukrainian superiority and part the people they are sending are untrained territorial defense soldiers and the clown western mercenaries who are completely disposable to Ukraine.

There's a risk of loose soil burying you or you getting soaked or drowned, so you actually have to do a fair bit to make them habitable for any period of time. I believe this was covered in the recent experimental archeology book on WW1 trenches. Maybe they splinter less when near explosions?

I would probably also say just weight and cost, you want to stabilize a trench and provide drainage, but at the same time, that trench (especially in this case) may simply be bypassed or given up in a few months. I don’t know if a full WW1 German style trench would make sense in the current environment compared to something between a British and French trench, enough to provide cover and drainage. In the case of the north, most of estimates I have seen have put the number of forces in reserve there as fairly low (10-15k) range. That said, we don’t have the latest data but it makes sense that if the Ukrainians can’t really push a full counter-attack in the Donbass that they probably would only have so many reserves on hand. It also seems like the West is donating odds and ends for an eventual Ukrainian counter-offensive but it may not happen any time soon and it may again be until the Spring until something happens.
