So I salvaged a Star League-era Crab that had a working Large Pulse Laser and 3 Double Heatsinks, and then eventually found two more LPLs from loot that turned it into the most terrifying limb destroyer I've seen from a medium mech considering it was pretty much running cool despite all the firepower. The game got real good.

Learning how to downscale engines properly taught me why people loved the Mechlab mod. Being able to turn Shadowhawks into very solid brawler mechs that could carry an AC-10 plus MLs and an SRM rack by reducing their speed to 60~kph was very valuable. But also, holy poo poo, I did not know it let you strip the XL Engines and Ferro Armor off poo poo. Once tonnage limits and enemy deployments start outpacing my Crab + 3x Shadowhawk lance, I'm pulling those off my Crab, retiring it honorably, and slapping them on my Warhammer for some real crazy poo poo.

Thank you very much for humoring my questions in the thread! I wish I went further in my Battletech Career run, but TBH all the turn-based stuff really bogs you down as opposed to MW5 just letting you jump in and do all the cool poo poo yourself, even with the spotty AI.

You can strip literally everything off in the YAML mechlab mod, but you're probably not supposed to be able to

Given how moddable both BT and MW5 are, plus the resolution of the Harmony Gold legal issues, it really feels like a golden era for the IP. I just want a single player game with a campaign that’s crafted as well as the older games.

Depends on what you mean by the "older" games. I think there's a lot of rose-tinted nostalgia glasses on a few of them.

That said, the IP has a loving TON of poo poo they could mine for stories. Doubly so if you're not hell bent on working in the Clan Invasion era.

THAT said, one of the bigger issues is that a solid 75% of your player base really just wants a Merc company simulator. You could craft the finest SP, linear campaign ever and there's still going to be a very vocal subset furious that you can't take a ton of trash "blow up the radar tower at this location" procedural missions in a sand box. Which, you know, I get. God knows I enjoy that crap as much as the next person.

The real issue tends to be that making a long enough campaign to let the unit meta-game play out (getting and upgrading new mechs, basically, pilot progression maybe) is difficult. Hand crafted, set piece missions are a lot more resource intensive to put together than a script that picks 8 mechs from a list, grabs a map from a list, and grabs a subset of spawn points and items from another map-specific list. It's one of the big reasons why all these games use them as progression gateways and expect you to grind the procedural stuff in between. But . . . having them scattered around means that you lack the impact of going back to back on those impressive missions.

My hot take is that MW3 was the best of the series, and it worked for more or less the same reason that OG MechCommander did: it compressed the timeline to a single operation, and salvage became important specifically because of the circumstances of a hosed deployment leaving you without support. Hell, I think both were "my dropship got shot down in the opening stages of Operation Bulldog." IIRC it was also relatively short-ish, something like 20 missions. Regardless, packing them in like that with no filler actually made a somewhat memorable plot. I haven't played that since it released in 1999, but I still remember the broad strokes of getting shot down behind enemy lines and needing to recover another downed dropship full of mechs as a prelude to securing a working dropship to rendezvous with your forces. I couldn't tell you more than like 3 missions in MW2: Mercs if you held a gun to my head.

But. . . you know, no merc sandbox.

The nostalgia glasses BT nerds have for them are coke-bottle thick. You can find them online easy enough, and the first one in particular is novel as gently caress for being a no bullshit RPG (as in, walk around town, go buy new gun from the gun shop, etc). But you need to be really loving into retro games.

A Battletech game centered around the fall of the Star League and the first succession wars after could be neat for a change. Your company starts with the top-tier good stuff and as the hellwar drags on you get less and less, downgrade more and more, and you go through the first couple hundred years with your company until you're defending some backwater trying to hold on to literally anything

If you want Merc Company Simulator you play it out long term over a couple centuries as things escalate and you dwindle and adapt, if you want small scale operation you're using the good poo poo but ending the campaign in either a broken mech or a lovely retrofitted one over one campaign on a planet, or you have that until the very end until you salavage an SLDF one for the finale or something

Mostly I think it'd be neat to approach it from the other direction for a change

The Amaris Civil War would be another good one. Start off as some rookie Mechwarrior that gets caught in one of the opening assaults that barely survives, you can start the campaign with small guerilla actions while your unit is trying to regroup and break out to the main SLDF forces and then move on to the big set piece battles once you hook up with them, then you have the final mission with you personally stomping the palace gates with Kerensky himself. :black101:

Hell you could throw in a final boss fight with a Matar or whatever bonkers Wunderwaffe Mech you could think of.

I’d like to see a battle tech 4x type game, on one of the peripheries that plays kind of like stellaris. Conquer your neighbors, build infrastructure for building war forces, outfit deploy them, battle them. Though it would need more detailed combat than stellaris with blob based fights. Maybe RTS-lite, or possibly hex based turn combat resolutions?

E: but this is cool too. Have you tried instruments of destruction, besiege, or Terratech?

If I knew what I was doing with code, I'd add another Gladiator-fight option in RogueTech: Tournament of Champions, but with randomly chosen Urbies, all fitted for melee-only. Solo, duo, 4 vs 4 or 8 vs 8, or 4x4x4 three-way fights. Unsanctioned, illegal, essentially mech cage fights.

I used ti play it roughly annually before BT came out.

That's interesting. I thought they did a very good job world building with all the news reports and journal entries the player character makes. I actually vividly remember many of the mini-story arcs with each contract you take like escorting the giant ice comet to Persperina or whatever the planet name was or fighting an insurgency with the Draconis Combine and blasting a floor out of a business tower.

in MW2:Mercs there's an earlyish mission that has an Atlas drop as an oh poo poo moment but you have a ton of support. I remember gaming that mission with a full on flamer build. iirc you can salvage that when everything else is still in medium / light territory and lol as you crush everything

The best thing about MW2:Mercenaries was, in the version with the fixed salvage, quitting out of the final Solaris mission to carry over the "player earned salvage" flag to the first mission against the Clans and salvaging a Timber Wolf the game wasn't actually supposed to give you (along with all of the Solaris rewards).

I showed that off in my LP of it a few years back.

There's a handy option in Mission Control's settings that's off by default that however many support lances the enemy gets you'll have an ally one to match without having to worry about if you'll get one randomly or not. Just look for MatchAllyLanceCountToEnemy and switch it to true. Usually like having that on until I get a demi-lance going, at least for BEX. BTA I never bother since you have a bunch of vehicles to run interference from the get go.

Note this doesn't watch for the usual reinforcements that show up, just for the extra units MC injects into a mission when its on.

PSA for anyone doing a modded MW5 play through right now:

They're going to drop the expansion soon, and with it a free update. This update will almost certainly break a gently caress ton of mods.

If you want to finish your play through and you're on Steam, right click on MW5 in your library, hit properties, then go to updates. Set it to only update when you launch the game.

Now go over to the betas tab. Hit the drop down and select the beta for version 1.1.328. That's the current version. That will lock it on that version and prevent you from getting the update.

Once you're done with your playthrough and want to upgrade, just go back to the betas tab, hit none, and it will update the files to whatever the current version is then.
