There's quite a lot of Portal Three Kingdoms cards in the top 20 on that list. Is that just due to rarity of the print run, because most of these do not look like particularly good cards to me, even at common.

Yes, Portal 3 Kingdoms was aimed at the Asian market, and the English version was only sold in Australia, so the amount of it floating around is pretty minimal.

there's a variety of reasons they'll reject grading a card. I'm sure straight up gum on it will do it. if they reject it, they don't charge for it, which is at least small consolation.

Wow! Does that mean the card is just in "damaged" condition or something, I would have thought the grading system was specifically scaled to account for that kind of minor blemish? Is there "0" still some standard to them?

That's exactly what I was worried about, that their prestige or standards would make them just not want their name on it at all. Won't send biohazard, but the card being obviously creased or straight up crumbled was part of the plan and if they're turning nose up at a little wrinkle, comedy-damage is definitely gonna be a bridge too far. The big honkin' zero is always part of it when he's brought it up before. I guess an "authentic" shell is better than nothing.

I tried reading BRO story but didn't get into it, lotta references I wasn't around for. This is my first time actually trying to follow along with the art and story and I dig it. Seeing her Compleated version actually has some context for me now which makes it more than, okay, cool character with cool lighting. Hoping she does more than just screw everynoe over when she gets compleated, I get her reasoning if they truly need her power... but are they going to even get to use it before she goes all greasy? I'm excited to see how it all pans out, even having many of the cards spoiled. Will be fun to see how Lukka decides to connect his navi braid to a phyrexian and gently caress his life up.

Reading a summary of the magic story around Nahari and this seems kinda dumb. She knew she would become a weapon of the enemy and decided to just let that happen? Boo.

It's not quite that bad. Melira says she's infected and then tells her purging the infection would put her out of action for days or weeks.

"We don't have that kind of time," said Nahiri.

"That's what I thought you'd say," said Melira. "You're early enough in the process that we can wait. You have time before you're too far gone for me to pull back."

And Nahiri is the most powerful one there (being thousands of years old and all), so they decide the chances of success are low enough without her that it's better to bring her along, get the job done and then heal her afterwards. Kind of a calculated risk.

Snuff Out has always been good in pauper, especially during the Drake era.

It not being popular in commander for a long time probably has more to do with commander players generally preferring to lose to other players comboing off, instead of lowering themselves to play spot removal to disrupt that sort of thing.

DMR Draft tonight was fun and holy moly, we had 3 whole pods and they went for 5 rounds. Never had that many folks there before since I started, some weeks barely enough to happen at all. I skipped the last round, was hungry and it was hot in there. I won 2, lost 2, but every game was really close and went 2-1. Definitely the best I'd done in a draft so far and the deck had some fun plays now and then. Don't usually play blue, but went blue/black and learned a lot.

I drafted Opposition and Turnabout but never actually got to use them that well, I have very bad control instincts and knowledge and skill lol. I won with it once, where I tapped my way to whittling opponent down with slight board advantage. Another game though I made a lot of blocking trades or took damage, just not even thinking I could just tap the danger away. Or that I could be mana fudging them, or tapping their artifacts on their turn. There's gotta be a proverb about giving someone a powerful weapon they don't understand well enough to use properly.

Regenerate also did not work how I initially expected(even though it said it in the part of the card I was glossing over), learned that after blocking with it to deal 1 damage, regenerate to keep it alive, then cast a -1/-1 and kill the creature. Whoops!

My favourite loss was an early game and a good lesson on not conceding early like I tend to do, bad arena habit to have in paper where games matter. My opponent had no board for most of the game and had mostly ramp and cycling and graveyard stuff with nothing to do with and I was just movin along until I won started wondering why she didn't concede, and then got sloppy and didn't leave a blocker since I'd finish her next turn and she got some great draws and turned all her lands into 1/1s and then fed them all to her one creature who went from 1/1 or 2/2 into a 12/12, which was enough to kill me because I had dealt enough self-damage early on with some 4/4 freak who hurts me equal to damage it deals. Oh actually, there was a turn where we had a laugh when she played this card to nullify 2 damage, which bought her that turn that won.

That same Fleshreaver 4/4 won some other games, so it was a fun card and I kinda like that bleeding-out early aggro or advantage play. My favourite game of the night was one where my opponent and I both Cackling Fiend'd each other after I had been Duress'd twice, and I had cast Duress & Recoil on them. Usually topdecking isn't the most fun phase of a game but for it to be that early after we both aggressively mulched each other's hands while also burning through our own, it was just comical, and to top it off I used Wormfang Drake or Faceless Butcher to exile my Cackling Fiend and they killed it and forgot about the return-from-exile thing and was briefly deeply let down by the misfortune before realizing they were empty-handed anyway. I lost this game by asking them why they weren't target my face with their lightning spell instead of my manowar instead, I don't know if I would have won if I didn't say anything, but I definitely would not have lost that specific turn lol.

I think Duress would be a better card if you could target yourself with it, even if it meant revealing your hand because more than once I had Arcanus, the Omnipotent in hand a card I couldn't pay for yet, but if I could Duress myself and discard it, I could Death it to the battle field. Just realized I had an Entomb too that I took out after a loss b/c they had some graveyard exiling poo poo going on and didn't put back in afterwards.

I should play blue more often in drafts, have to know the rules and make better decisions to not gently caress myself. Too often I make draft decks that are cool monsters I can play and some stuff to kill the monsters in my way, and not as well as I would if I built some better habits and thinking poo poo through, maybe slow down a lil.

I was thinking of Stoneforge Mystic, which doesn't feature Nahiri, but Nahiri was based on Stoneforge Mystic to the point I assume the artist thought that's who they were painting, but in lore the Stoneforge Mystic is explicitly not Nahiri. Doing some extra reading, have some lore questions from Nahiri's wiki page:

quote:

The Three decided to force the Eldrazi into physical form and trap them on a plane, sacrificing that plane for the well-being of the Multiverse.[1] They searched for a plane with lush ecosystems and uniquely dynamic mana—a powerful lure for the Eldrazi's insatiable hunger. Wanting to start their work immediately, the three decided upon Zendikar.

So, they were looking, by planeswalking to random places I guess, but got impatient and decided instead to just sacrifice Nahiri's home plane since they already knew about it and just wanted to start ASAP? I guess being stone cold pragmatic is part of her deal.

Nahiri, Sorin, and Ugin seal away the Eldrazi, yay cool. Afterwards Nahiri is doing guardianship stuff on Zendikar.

quote:

Nahiri stayed and lived happily among her people for a long time. The wild mana of Zendikar lured other beings to the plane as well, and Nahiri took it upon herself to protect Zendikar from those who would cause it harm.

I thought traversing planes was a big deal, only planeswalkers can do it and it's not trivial to do, with a handful of exceptions, rare portals, and rude phyrexian tricks, but by and large, normal beings can't decide to go to another plane. So where the heck are these other folks and things coming from -- is switching planes one of those super hard and rare things to do, except they also do it with whatever whenever they need some conflict or revisit a tribe?

edit: wotc needs to get their web poo poo together, keep clicking articles to lore that's not there anymore.

We had a pretty healthy turnout for DMR here too, better than expected. I went 2-1 with a durdly UBr deck. I got carried away drafting basics over bad cards and forgot to account for the 3 cycling lands I'd picked, so I had to run some very bad cards to make playables. That definitely took me back to when I first started drafting during the Urza & Masques blocks.

I'd like to do one or two more but I'm not sure if the LGS is going to run another. I really like the boomer basics, and I got an extra dose of nostalgia opening Birds of Paradise and Wrath of God in my prize packs.

Suffer not the unclean to live.
Went to a DMR draft yesterday as well. It was the first time I'd drafted in a store since like 2002. I've done a prerelease at GenCon and some home events, but that's all. Tried to go rakdos goblins, but failed to get enough good gobbos together. A few Dralnu's Crusades early on had convinced me this was a good idea, and sealed my fate. The guy that ended up winning the draft was directly across from me, snapping up all the good red goblin cards, as I would find out when he trounced me repeatedly with Pashalik Mons. Fortunately, I got ahold of a pair of sneak attacks at the beginning of pack two, and started drafting any and all big creatures with enter/exit/dies abilities, in the hope of shifting my deck over to a CHEAT IT ALL OUT strategy. Got smoked game one, but games two and three I got Sneak Attack onto the table early with the help of Nightscape Familiar. Phantom Nishoba put some work in here, alongside Vexing Sphinx and Aven Fateshaper. Then I'd cast Urborg Uprising and throw them at my opponent again. It was brutal. Nightscape Familiar was definitely mvp, making spells cheap and shrugging off juggernaut hits left and right.

I really wanna draft this set again, and already bought my own box.

The wiki didn't mention this and can't see the real stories currently, it does say Nahiri and an elf got into a spat when the elf lied to and betrayed Nahiri when she was trying to fix up the planet and seal away the eldrazi again, and instead loosened the Eldrazi prison and made the planet all crumbletown.
