What if Jerome Walton made me a champion?

The Cubs plan to drag him, a union rep, into a protracted and bitter arb dispute and then trade him at the deadline for a lottery ticket arm that we will never hear from again.

Not that I think the Cubs have been well run by any means, but you’re talking about a 1.5-2 win player in Happ coming off an extreme outlier while half your top 10 prospects play OF, including the top 3 with ETAs of 2023-24. Also, RF is booked for the next four years with Suzuki. Even taking money out of the equation do you want to marry yourself to an inconsistent left fielder for the next 4-6 years?

The Pirates are going to be bad this year, but what's more fun?
A. Rooting for a team that has Andrew McCutchen on it
B. Rooting for a team that doesn't have Andrew McCutchen on it

It's not like the Pirates have a logjam of outfield prospects he'll be blocking. Give him his goodbye campaign in front of the fans who have loved him the most and longest, let him teach Oneil Cruz how to be cooler. Then he can finish his season and maybe career as the full time CF when we trade Bryan Reynolds to the loving Braves or something

People are clowning on Crane for doing the Jerry Jones thing but so far his moves seem pretty good to me. Locking up the best pen the league, a really good FA signing, not overspending on FAs, so far so good. I guess until he fucks something up I gotta give him the benefit of the doubt.

e: i guess signing arb agreements isn't "locking up" but it certainly bodes better for their return as FAs if we're coming to agreements instead of trying to screw guys

I know it ultimately worked out but I still have no idea why Dusty forgot Stanek existed in the postseason

Framber could easily be a CY Young front runner this year, that’s still a crazy value for Houston. Even if that jump is unprecedented.

Yeah, he also made a huge leap this year going from 130 to 200 IP so I'd wanna make sure can shoulder that burden consistently while also being the #1 guy on the staff before I sign him to a long deal. Framber's problems have always been mental, his stuff has always been amazing, it's just been when he had a bad inning it would get in his head and spiral. This season he's been a zen master, they frequently cut to him in between innings to show him doing breathing exercises, our local beat writer has written a billion stories about Framber's relationship with this sports psychologist in the DR who fixed his tilt. But I'd like to see him repeat that this year, or stay in that realm. He's gonna be under a lot of pressure this season

Another spring commute
Basically all teams at this point operate under a "file and trial" policy where they present arb eligible players with an offer, and if the player responds with anything but a yes the team takes them to arbitration even if it's over a paltry amount. Zero chance for negotiation, presumably hoping that such a policy will cause most players to just take what's offered instead of having to go through an arduous arbitration hearing process. This was the same rationale cited last year when the Cubs basically did the same thing to Contreras over what I think was even less money, although in that case they did hammer something out to avoid an actual hearing at the zero hour.

This is not how "file and trial" works. The phrase means they do not negotiate once they've filed. The purpose is to incentivize both sides to reach an agreement before the filing deadline, instead of using the filing values as negotiating leverage.

The Dodgers are loving stupid for not simply settling this before going to a hearing. Just give him what he wants JFC he has been insanely cheap and valuable for them and even his asking price is still absurdly cheap! Instead they're going to go to a hearing where they poo poo on him all over $400k, barely half the MLB minimum.

Tony Gonsolin worth 4.6 WAR with a 2.14 ERA in 2022 and he's asking for $3.4 million which is an absolute bargain. I wouldn't be surprised if an arbiter gave him even more (this can't happen I know).

He should win in arbitration easily though.
