He also had a huge HUGE rivalry with RFK, and the feeling was mutual (Dude actually harassed RFK over JFK dying, causing the man to be in tears). He could've won the 1960 Presidential primary outright on his own but was too terrified of being humiliated if he lost so he stayed out until it was basically too late and got made the VP candidate to JFK. When RFK entered the '68 primary, LBJ 'noped' out of there.
