But, like, how is he competent, when his record isn't exactly what one would call "stellar." Derby were lucky to avoid relegation in his first season with them in 20/21, and he got them bumped down in 21/22.

yeah, Rooney's managerial career so far seems to be mostly as the captain of various doomed boats, the Derby fans still love him for a) getting anything at all out of a squad that might as well have been signed by harassing people outside of Tesco, and b) appearing out of nowhere to shout at Mel Morris every day until his players got paid but my main justification here is that he isn't Gerrard or Lampard, who are bad managers, ipso facto qed
