the book I Am Legend has an all-time great twist

The scientist is basically the last living human, goes out finding vampires in the day while they sleep, killing them while trying to develop a cure to turn them human again, especially looking for a woman to turn so he can cure his loneliness after a stray dog he found eventually doesn't recover. The vampires start to recover and don't really remember the time before, when being human was normal, so they don't exactly want to be turned.

He gets honeypotted by a sexy vampire and they put him on trial and he realizes "oh poo poo I am exactly dracula" right as his suicide/execution pill takes effect.

the murder mystery of the first season works because its tightly embedded into criminal enterprises that are a direct result of timegration so it functions well as a means of exploring how and why timegrants live in such a way that the murder is actually pretty easy to understand once the cultural stuff is explained

the murderer of the second season by contrast just seems to be evil for no actual reason and the theories the police come up with are so incredibly goddamned stupid it actually cheapens some of the best beats from the first season where the theories sounding stupid is only because modern people cant grasp how timegrants think and figuring out how they think is the key to solving the mystery

Lacan had a patient who went to the frontlines in WWI, a young man who had just married, who returned years later to find his lover had died almost immediately after he left, and this gave him a terrible psychosis. He was obsessed with her, with the idea of her being the perfect woman.

And so Lacan asked him "if I was god and I could create a woman who looked like her, acted like her, had her memories, so in every way she was the same, and you could meet her, would you feel better?"

and they guy said "no, I just want her"

I think of that as a genre, which Solaris is probably the best example of, and turns it into a kind of horror, but there are a few films which get this idea of desire right, and they basically all are about a man desiring a woman he cannot for some reason have, but if he can have her, doesn't want her. Bunuel does these as dark comedy

watched Netflix's 'Fall' about girls climbing a radio tower cause I needed something in the background while working

Pros
- cool concept. legit sweaty palm inducing stuff in the first half
- actresses decent enough for a low budget enterprise
- overall good effects with some fantastic birds. props to whoever made those vultures

Cons
- TWISTS, including multiple 'it was all a dream' moments. the survival and vertigo aspects were enough people, stop trying to be clever.
- main twist neuters the female comradery aspect of the film which gives way to...
- weird 'my daddy I cut contact with was always right' boomer bait subplot

overall same tier as that Shallows movie with that lady vs the shark

what really irritates me about season two is that the b plot is literally king olaf doing crimes to prove his identity so why the gently caress is the a plot about jack the ripper and government conspiracies and magic powers this was way more complicated than just making the story be about king olaf especially since the stinger for the first season was sexy king olaf on a white horse which is what we were all looking forward to you assholes

anybody check out the netflix adaptation of the three body problem series that got released a couple days ago? the first episode apparently got decent to good reviews.

i liked the book series a lot, although characterization took a back seat in the second book and just kind of evaporated in the last. also in the last book, the “humanity grew too decadent and the men grew too feminine” stuff blew chunks, but the dark forest stuff was so good.

the season two family subplot has similarly great potential the daughter getting knocked up by her medieval christian boyfriend but it only ever gets as far as identifying the core conflict which is terribly frustrating especially since no one seems willing to directly discuss the fact that a medieval christian being the baby daddy significantly complicates the relevant tropes and that this element is the only thing making the fairly clichéd subplot interesting at all

I didn’t realize it was as available or that it was a series I’m going to check it out for sure. I learned just a bit ago that there is a 4th Three Body Problem book that was written as fan fic but the original author gave it his blessing to be attached to the series. it’s called The Redemption of Time and it was pretty fun.
