Yeah, I only heard this like yesterday about Sullivan King. Honestly it's one of those weird things like learning that an artist you love has a bunch of pet iguanas or something. It's a shock to learn someone is into Scientology but it's also like "... yeah, OK, that makes sense." They also have a clutch of actually-talented artists in their stable.

New Orbital dropped. It's not one of their best by any standard, but I have to admire the audacity of collaborating with a group of folk singers on a techno remix of Ring a Ring O'Roses.

Rezz's label HypoVizion put out its first release (or I guess the first non-Rezz release, since Nightmare On Rezz Street 2 was on HypnoVizion), this EP from isqa, and it goes pretty hard. It's very much something I would expect Rezz to put out, so if you like her stuff, check this out.

I'm lukewarm about this new Skrillex track. Flowdan carries it entirely, which is fair because he's incredible and has no bad features.

Parts of the beat are interesting, Skrill seems to have zero fear of introducing some percussive sound that's way too clicky or something - I'm pretty sure one of the percs in the intro is literally just the ProTools click sound - and it generally works well. But I think the main wobble bassline is a little bit lazy, and maybe it's just that I've not slept much but the mix seems surprisingly unrefined for a Skrillex track.

I don't care for Fred Again, TBH. Maybe there's some stuff of his I should really listen to, but his meteoric rise - and suddenly everyone in the city buzzing about him playing a Boiler Room set here - made me look up a single or two and it's the same story... just boring Tech House with a bit of a twist. Do people really go that crazy for middle-of-the-road Tech House? Honestly, is there something he's produced that I should really give another chance?

A small part of me wonders, maybe this is projection but... when an artist like Skrillex makes huge waves with some ridiculously heavy poo poo that defines a whole scene, and then a few years later gets poo poo on for it (because people grow up and get bored of heavy tearout poo poo), and comes out with some records that are decidedly more introspective, laid-back and for lack of better terms, fringe and rootsy, with shuffled rhythms and tempo changes and no more chainsaw wobbles and huge Pendulum snares... I sometimes wonder if that transformation is genuine artistic advancement or simply reactionary to criticism that their old heavy style embodied and nurtured the most obnoxious parts of rave music.

That's all very verbose and I don't know if I'm getting the sentiment out there accurately, but I sort of felt the same way about Recess and Jack Ü when they were things. The 'deeper' music felt a bit phony and I wanted more of the old heavy poo poo anyway. In any case, you can't knock the guy's sound design; as much as I hate 100 Gecs and the beat to that collaboration was also mostly unremarkable, the guy is still inventing new snare sounds in 2023.

Anyway the track was OK. 'Very mid', you might say. I wonder if this is going to be the peak energy of the album and the rest some boring Deep House, or if things get turned up higher. What was the first single off of Recess?

I don't really like Rumble very much. Fred's and Skrillex's work with rappers doesn't click for me in general (Purple Lamborghini excluded).

The structure is short and kinda feels like it's been designed as a DJ tool that they can drop in after some more energetic music or do live remixes of. They'll have a "Killers In The Jungle" button that Fred can smash 1000x a second and send everyone's brains to space.

It's fine for that, but I don't really like it as a song or a single.

Can't check right now but IIRC Jungle by Fred Again has a sound that is as close to the Ableton metronome sound as makes no difference.

It sounds like a Sigma tune with a little bit more soul. Another attempt to take part of the D&B formula and make it more palatable to the masses. To that end, it works, but I'm having a hard time hearing this fit into a DJ set.

I like the drums and the bubbly little midbass sound, not sure how I feel about either of those vocalists though. I generally don't like my liquid D&B to have vocals over every inch of it so maybe that's it.

Also, are attention spans getting even shorter? Both of these singles are under 2.5 minutes long. That's another part of why I have trouble hearing this mixed; it's way too short to get in and out of unless you're dropping it as some sort of interlude, which is a weird thing to do with a ~174BPM song. I guess I'll wait for some remixes to come out.

I completely agree with him about RAM. I don't always agree with him, but he's right: that album kicks rear end. What I don't agree with him on is Human After All being "brittle". I know it's not everyone's favorite Daft Punk album (hell, it's not my favorite), but it has a bunch of really strong tracks. On Alive 2007 (which may be one of the best live albums ever recorded), you can really see how dope a lot of those tracks are.

Wasn't one of the problems with Daft Punk's Alive tour that their set was actually surprisingly short? I've talked to multiple people who were there and they said that for all the hype, they were expecting a way longer set but it's basically just what you get, not even 90 minutes.

Rageaholic posted:

I dig this one even if, again, I'm not too keen on the gen-Z vocals (wow, what an old thing to say). It's a decent take on Bass House. Reminds me a lot of the direction Zeds Dead sort of took with Lost You, it's even almost in the same key signature.
