What is the loving point of doing a video game adaptation if the “adaptation” bares zero resemblance to the source material?? https://twitter.com/discussingfilm/status/1615711352428830720?s=46&t=VZzSPxGNoMIJ_UjoxaI9dA

Went out and watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre because of the Chainsaw Man opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFlDRhvM4L0 Fantastic movie, it had some genuine surprises Shocking how much of it was copied by every other slasher flick afterwards Steve Yun fucked around with this message at 08:53 on Jan 19, 2023 |

https://twitter.com/VanLathan/status/1614447660265795584 I scrolled way down the list of replies, and I don't think I saw a single mention of Kurosawa. Here neither. That's a bit depressing. Out of his 30 movies, I think one is outright bad, Sanshiro Sugata Part II, but he was basically forced to make that. The rest range from good to some of the greatest cinematic achievements ever. At the very least his '61-65 run is impeccable: Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low, and Red Beard.

Stretches feel like the film going through the motions, and most of the characters have very little to do in the second half. Tonally the movie can never decide what it wants to be besides a condemnation of the Regime and social mores of Iran. It switches between a serial killer POV thriller, a woman facing sexism movie, a social critique and all with zero connection between the component parts. I wouldn't say it was awful, but I wouldn't mind having just seen it on TV

One of my strangest film going experiences was with The Grand Budapest Hotel. The crowd reacted wrong. Like, I vividly remember that they gasped when Willem Defoe threw the cat out the window, but then laughed when it was shown that the cat had died.

It really revels in the misogynistic violence and the serial killer perspective before completely shifting tone in the second half. Just a lot of gut punches for not much payoff. I'm still pretty mystified by the hype other than the (justified) anti-repressive male theocracy thing. Then again, I disliked Border too. I don't think Ali Abassi is for me. I do get to see Puss in Boots tomorrow and am cautiously optimistic, before a Saint Omer weekend rewatch which may help me sort out my thoughts on that masterpiece.

This was my experience with Three Billboards, where the audience didn't get the signal for when the movie turned serious, so all the non-comedy elements in the second half fell flat. It's bizarre seeing a movie where the audience reaction is mismatched. I've seen plenty of live performances where the performers have to adapt to the audience's vibes, but the way a movie keeps marching on, assuming you're on board with it, is so strange and I kind of wish more movies played with that.

Ugh going to a late-night screening of Mandy with a bunch of drunk young dudes in the audience. Cage is doing his heartbreaking breakdown/alcoholism scene, and they're all chuckling because it's craaaazy Nicolas Cage ![]() Luckily I'd already seen it multiple times in the cinema (really high)

The opposite problem can be disorienting, too. I was the only one laughing in my decently full showing of Crimes of the Future. That movie is basically a comedy!
