idk if this is interesting but if the water was 100% pure and at 25 degrees C one pulse of that laser would get some light down there no problem. instead of every second for a million lifetimes of the universe

sea water just got too much stuff floating in it. or I missed a decimal. funny thing is seawater is only twice as opaque, it just adds up after 11,000 meters.

The scientists probably should have taken a little more time to prepare before committing to something that was going to waste a shitton of time

imo the real consideration is "even if it is habitable do we want to colonize a planet where the people living there experience one hour for every decade that passes for the rest of humanity"

Tennis is abuzz with tongue-in-cheek talk about a “Netflix curse” during the Australian Open, drawing a line from the streaming service’s new docu-series about the sport to the recent rough times for Season 1 protagonists.

Of the 10 players featured prominently across the five episodes released last week, right before the start of play at Melbourne Park, only one remains in the singles competition heading into Sunday: Felix Auger-Aliassime, a 22-year-old from Canada.

The No. 6-seeded Auger-Aliassime, a US Open semifinalist in 2021, said he wasn’t aware this was even a topic of conversation until Saturday, when his girlfriend clued him in.

“I thought it was funny,” he said after beating 28th-seeded Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to reach the fourth round. “I don’t know; I don’t think it’s connected. ... Maybe the players that lost, maybe they do feel like it’s connected, somehow. I don’t think they do. I don’t think it’s connected, anyhow.”

Well, of course it isn’t.

There is no such thing as a “curse” in the world of sports, although folks sure do love to concoct and discuss them. The Curse of the Bambino, for one. The Sports Illustrated cover jinx was another.

It is worth noting that no one is drawing any sort of similar silly connection between active participation in the filming of Netflix’s popular “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” — made by the same executive producers as “Break Point” — and F1′s on-track results.

Consider: Lewis Hamilton has taken part in interviews and managed to win the driver’s championship in each of the first three years of that series. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, did not sit for the Netflix cameras and collected the past two titles.

Still, just for fun, let’s run down the roster of what’s been released from “Break Point”:

— Episode 1: Nick Kyrgios (withdrew before the tournament because he needs surgery on his left knee); Thanasi Kokkinakis (lost to 35-year-old Andy Murray in the second round in a five-setter that lasted 5 hours, 45 minutes and ended at 4:05 a.m. on Friday)

— Episode 2: Matteo Berrettini (lost to Murray in the first round in a five-setter that lasted 4 hours, 49 minutes); Ajla Tomljanovic (withdrew before the tournament because of an injured knee)

— Episode 3: Maria Sakkari (lost to 87th-ranked Zhu Lin in the second round Friday in a three-setter); Taylor Fritz (lost to 113th-ranked Australian wild-card entry Alexei Popyrin in the second round in a five-setter)

— Episode 4: Ons Jabeur (lost to Marketa Vondrousova in the second round in a three-setter); Paula Badosa (withdrew before the tournament with an injured thigh)

— Episode 5: Auger-Aliassime (plays Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round Sunday); Casper Ruud (lost to Jenson Brooksby in the second round)

Yes, one of these is not like the others.

“Funny how things work out sometimes,” Auger-Aliassime said.

a soldier's wife is assassinated by the state and so he takes a suicidal deployment as a guard at a remote outpost where he can sit around taking brain-melting drugs that let him hallucinate seeing his dead wife while he gets himself off, while there he voyeuristically obsesses over watching the opposing side's guard murder people as they both slowly die of ground water poisoning. A+++, very solid mood piece, will watch several more times over the course of my life.

420nm light had the least attenuation, and each photon is 4.74x10^-19 Joules.

The attenuation coefficient was I think .0121 for sea water and .0064 for absolutely pure water? per meter. The temp, salinity, and amount of poo poo floating in the water effects this but I'm ignoring it. This would be considered very clear sea water.

The deepest point in the ocean is about 11,000 meters.

So for sea water that's e^-(.0121*11,000) means each 420nm photon had a one in 1x10^58 of getting through 11,000 meters of seawater.

So we expect to need 3x10^39 joules total. For, on average, one photon arrival.

There's almost 9*10^13 joules in a gram of energy. And 1x10^3 grams in a kilogram.

So you have to blast 3.4*10^22 kilograms of energy to expect one photon to arrive. (1% the mass of the earth)

Which is a black hole with a diameter of about 0.05 millimeters

pls check my math

is it a queer movie if its about going on a date with your trans boss while you're married in Pakistan where being trans is halal

Antonymous
Apr 4, 2009

There is even a scene where, basically at the climax of the film, the protagonist decides to "goes for it" and tries to initiate sex with his boss, who has said she wants to wait til after her gender affirmation surgery, and she leaps back and says basically "what will you do? are you a f*ggot?" because at that point there is no way for heterosexual sex to occur

like in Pakistan, an islamic country which is homophobic as a matter of religious dogma, if you are trans you can get married whatever. it is not considered a similar issue. Essentially his boss would be a woman once she had the surgery and by jumping the gun she is deeply disgusted in her lover.

and that made me think like is that a queer film then. the main guy is, in this culture, simply cheating on his wife with his boss. we say "okay that means he's repressed and closeted" but maybe not
