Only tangentially related but the new documentary series on Industrial Light & Magic (which is incredible and you should definitely watch) has a bit in it about kitbashing. In retrospect it's really obvious, but until now I had no idea how much of the greebles on the Death Star or Millenium Falcon were bashed out of model sprues. These guys were buying dozens of the same kits to have duplicates until one of the producers just went out and bought an injection-molding machine, lol.

There were a couple of times when they had to do a big space battle scene in Star Trek (before full CGI made creating infinite duplicates of ship models trivial) and some of the ships in the far background or wrecked hulls were actually store-bought hobby kits.

Half the floating casualties of the battle of Wolf-359 started life as Airfix and Revell model kits.

My favorite is the USS Constellation NCC-1017 in the original Star Trek which had that registration number because it was an Enterprise kit (this one) with the decals cut up and re-applied

There's a whole hell of a lot, like how there's a ton of Tiger parts scattered around the Falcon, or how the A-wing is just two halves of an F-14 glued together and some tubes stuck in the back. Adam Savage has a video about the universal greebly, even, and shows off the kit it comes out of.

What's even better is when it comes all the way back around. The TIE fighter has a suspension truck from a Sherman tank stuck to the top of that big ring on the back of the things. When Bandai released the modern Star Wars 1/72nd kits, sure enough, they replicated a model part from an entirely unrelated kit.

Taking a good hard look at a top view of the F-14's inlets and fuselage, and son of a bitch how did I never see it

That means it's responsible for two of my favorite fictional spaceships (the other being the VF-1)

When I played 40k back in the 90s we just had a couple of trash cans that we used for titan legs to spice up scenarios. Stomp across the battlefield with the movement governed by scatter dice.

Anyone interested in Kitbashing to a serious degree should go and create an account at The Replica Prop Forum. Along with thousands of other projects where people design, create, and often sell recreations of movie props, they have quite a scene where people are cataloguing the exact pieces used in kitbashed models, the kits they come from, and possible sources for said kits. Some really crazy perfect recreations of studio-scale ships, weapons, and whatever else built there, all based on users collaborating to find out just what exactly that odd part on a model is from.

If it helps, I was also thinking of the IG droids as soon as I saw that.

Star Wars is a masterclass of recycling everyday things into sci-fi objects we don't even question.

The reactor in the Endor bunker is mostly coffee cups.

It really is amazing how many low budget sci-fi movies in the 80's used Styrofoam containers as a wall texture.

Is there a legal aspect to this? Is it considered fair use because the bits are unrecognizable?

the model companies own the rights to the injection molds. You're not allowed to use the kit to make duplicate molds, but they can't control how you use the parts.

Humorous guesses aside: a friend ran a demo of Kingdom Death for us and the intro monster was an adult version of that lion (complete with "cut off its junk" as a chance on damage), so I'm gonna guess it's KD.

the spudging the flur de lis and hair would have infuriated me, and I see constantly where I probably would have given up and shelved it

then I get to the painting and go wow those blends are really good on the armor and then see him doing the accents and initially think "what is he doing here" and then I realize he's undercoating them and then filtering/glazing them up to nmm (underpainting red/brown) and the rest was just me going "god damnit". it's really good
