Does "fitness" actually matter for batters or is it just nonsense by the BCCI to prevent cool and thick gents like Privthi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan from usurping the pretty boys? I get why it matters for bowlers but is being a bit slow between the wickets an actual thing that stops teams from winning or just an easy excuse to not include guys?
As always I assume the BCCI are being fucks but I really like watching Shaw play and am weirdly annoyed by him not making the test squad.

Being able to field isn't a specialist position any more. If you can't get around the park to chase one you're letting runs go that the other guy might have stopped. Unless your average is just so much better that it becomes a risk worth taking, you're a weight to be carried.

I agree with this. Also, if you aren’t capable of getting fit enough and losing the weight does it demonstrate the commitment that selectors are looking for?

Looking at Aussie players from the 80's and wondering if it ever actually mattered.

I'd say fitness is pretty important batting at a high level. As you fatigue your technique and concentration with anything is going to go to poo poo.

The importance of this mission cannot be overemphasized
As a (not) very accomplished club cricketer, I can tell you that just wearing all the pads, gloves and helmet whilst playing on a warm day gets tiring pretty quickly. Being fit is a massive help to being able to stay focused and not get lazy in your technique.

Look at all the effort fielders do to turn 4 runs into 3. Team have realised games are won and lost in field.

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.
And the inner ring fielders too, being responsive and athletic somewhere like cover or midwicket can easily turn boundaries into singles or even dots.

And when you have 19 year olds like Darcie Brown and Phoebe Litchfield the question becomes when does it stop? Those two might play for another 16 years(2039).

Thanks for all the excellent answers, I sorta forgot about the fielding aspect. That said, this has only strengthened my interest in a guy who looks like this making it big.

An average of loving 80!

I have been teaching myself a little bit about the FC competitions of the world and the Ranji trophy is an interesting one. They have recently rejigged it as you would get the equivalent of Man City playing Crawley Town on the regs causing a little bit of stat padding to happen.

Speaking of unfit cricketers.

I went down to watch some third grade cricket at my local oval a couple weeks ago because my brother was playing. There's this dude in his team who took 5 wickets for 16 runs off 8 overs. He's 54, just out there for the love of the game. He came off when they were fielding in between spells because he was feeling feint and I went over to make sure he was doin alright and offered to grab him a drink from his esky.

"yeah mate, just the purple one over there near the slazenger bag"

Walk over and open it up.

3 iced coffees, a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, a wallet and a squeezy yoghurt.

I went to the little canteen and got him a gatorade and a water. Couldn't stop laughing all the way over.
