Just saw an invoice for a medic who consults for my program... he's getting $735 as an hourly rate. This doesn't motivate me to work any harder tbh

I worked at a place that had absolutely ridiculous external consulting rates. I think mine in a pretty junior position was over £500/hr. Guess how much of that I saw (it was none). I don't think anyone actually paid that anyway, it was purely accounting stuff - on the funding report we could say we had charged our industry partner XXXX for X hours work, the partner could note it down towards their contribution in the private-public funding model, the public funding body would be happy and then we'd spend the (much smaller) sum of money we actually got on writing the next funding proposal. Academia is a wonderful system.

Well that's all insane and dumb . This guy was definitely getting all the money straight to his Dr. Me, LLC. though. Money for work that I've already pre-reviewed before it gets sent to him for review. The efficiency of the private sector

Personally my happiness has gone from what I thought was normal to very high since I went self-employed. I say thought was normal because I realised once I got to my current state I’d actually just not been happy for 10 years. I work more but it’s varied and is entirely decided by what I think needs doing. Actually having control over your own life back is the best feeling in the world. I realise I’m privileged in being about to do it but If it’s something you’ve pondered and you have the resources, I couldn’t recommend it enough.

On the surface, yes. It won't be news to anyone here but that is simply a manifesting symptom of realising the unavoidable fact that the bullshit jobs system doesn't work and that it is very telling that the PMC had to invent accusatory terms like "quiet quitting" to describe "doing 100% of your job rather than 150%". It's one reason they're throwing a tantrum over WFH, as it allows one to quiet quit pretty easily, once one has defeated the cop in one's brain!

In short, as someone said earlier:

Failed Imagineer posted:

[...] The important thing is to get paid for those hours but only spend maybe 30 mins a day actually spreading dem sheets

In long, everyone should quiet quit: set your work output to a level that fits your compensation. Note that compensation here doesn't just mean your salary but factors that are unique to you, including "I like my colleagues so I'll do a bit more to help out when needed" and "I can't lose this job, I need the money" and "I'm self-employed, I do what I want when I want, and I love it."

The way I did it began in 1994 when the National Lottery started. To myself, in my literally autistic brain, I called it the lottery factor. My early career aimlessness crystallised into a simple binary of "If I won the lottery, would I quit working? Y/N" For the longest time, I was having fun, my colleagues were great, I was making money. But eventually the graph fell below the line and No turned into Yes, and then it was quittin' time.

In even shorter again, we should all quit being complicit in our own exploitation.

If I didn't need money I wouldn't work at all, there is an infinity of other stuff I could do with my time if I had the resources.

As I've said before I don't do what is actually helpful for my job, I do what makes it look like I have done the most job in the least amount of time, which is extremely stupid stuff. I also do things like plot my route inefficiently so I get paid as much as possible for driving around on the moors rather than actually being at work.

Do ethics have intrinsic "good" values? Are "values" necessarily what regular people might consider "good"? Or are they purely neutral terms that we load our own baggage on to?
This is a question I often ask myself!

DO NOT GOOGLE THAT

"bukkake" is a japanese word meaning, I think "splattered" but it has a specific pornographic meaning that you might be able to imagine. I have no idea what it refers to in this instance but I strongly advise against googling it without bracing yourself.
