Suburban Dad posted:Sure looks like it. I had a 96 but I don't think mine was digital like that. Also had more than twice the miles in 2003, lol. I had a 98 and it had about that many miles in 2002. Rode it to 150k I think before it was completely done. Unsafe to drive. Didn't lock up the tires, no AC, burned a quart per thousand miles. I probably hosed up replacing the brake master or had air somewhere in the system. I wish I had another shot at fixing it as I know so much more now and it was pretty easy to work on. It did have the same digital odometer though!

While not "mine" in the strictest sense, it was, briefly (x-post from Review your Rental) Courtesy of an early-bird special on Turo, I was the king of Glendale, if only for a week. In a moderately modified 2016 Audi S4, I sloshed through a historically wet Los Angeles with seemingly endless grip from the Michelin Pilot Sports–forever under threat from the vicious supercharged V6. It’s fast, almost too. The owner claimed 510 horsepower at the wheels, and I don’t doubt it. In the APR addled sport mode, even mid-throttle smacks your head into the seat’s integrated headrest; stuff it, and you skip into tomorrow. Popping into the right lane to overtake indecisive minivans on surface streets, as is the custom hereabouts, is a snap, and the “Eurocode” temporary tat emblazoned on the windshield lets ‘em know who sent ya. Wrapped in iridescent white vinyl and sitting on 19s, the pouty aftermarket lip discards all but a few precious inches of ground clearance. Despite my desperate attempts at Euclidean precision, I scraped the nose getting gas/Thai/tacos/more gas/and turning down Baxter street. But big lips are in––be they injection induced or injection-molded––and what’s beauty without a little pain? This car is LA hot. The buccal-phobic face, tightened and lifted with sharp lines and smooth dips, is elegant, if self-involved. The badges and grill are blacked out, gaping the car’s maw somewhere between a river bass and ahegao. But the headlights, reminiscent of flared, pointed eyes, implicitly threaten something dark and powerful lurking beneath. Behind this glimmery matte facade was a relatively well-appointed Audi. The Teutonically firm seats had plenty of seat remaining, despite the odo showing 88k, and the pre-rental detailing job was top-notch. The infotainment system, controlled by a plasticky rotary dial and plenty of tactile buttons, was minimally frustrating. I couldn’t figure out how to skip a song using the steering wheel auxiliary controls, but pairing my phone through Bluetooth was painless. Fabulous for me, but probably horrid for everyone else, since I blasted Yeat through the Bang & Olufsens all week with the windows down. Of course, there are the Audi quirks: The driver’s door requires just the right amount of force to register as “closed” (it’s a little more than you’d think). And the interior door grip felt a bit cheap and squeaky, as did a few of the controls. Minimal concessions for maximum sport in my book. The athletically tuned suspension and 19” rims, with accordingly minuscule sidewall, render a firm ride. Ideal on federally funded freeways or canyon corners unsullied by overweight trucks, but low speed cruising on earthquake cracked surface streets made for a less than luxurious trip to Erewhon. My kidney stones, however, remained intact. The steering is light, precise, creamy. Maintaining your course feels like telepathy. Minimal adjustment is required to hold your trajectory on sweepers, and jumping into the middle lane of a five-lane one-way was a cinch. I think my spaceship knows which way to go. It’s also loving loud, or ‘throaty.’ This ain't no Tesla; the exhaust seldom lets you forget the internal combustion happening under the hood. Step on the gas, and the blower whines like a banshee; let off, and a few burbles spatter out the rear (think coughing after a dab hit, less like an AK-47). At about 3k RPM in third gear, the moaning pipes hit a resonant frequency that vibrated an interior panel or something in the back seat, harmonizing with the screaming, gurgling symphony. But it’s not so bad. My dutiful girlfriend, who typically despises these sorts of things, officially didn’t mind™, and even had a little fun during on-ramp bombing runs. The infotainment settings graciously allow you to eliminate the synthetic fanfare pumped into the cabin, so it’s possible to putter about and have a dour conversation unimpeded. Among the usual suspects in the automotive press, some ink (though not much) was spilled about the S4’s lack of “drama.” First of all: good! I don’t want to come home to find my clothes strewn about the lawn because my car saw a few Edmunds listings in my browser history. And while that may be true of a stock configuration, the amalgam of mods and tweaks to this example made for a decidedly exciting ride around town. And to top it off, a week with this beaut cost the same as an Aveo from Hertz.

RIP Paul Walker posted:I can’t believe I’m seeing that gauge cluster with that mileage in 2023. Please post more details! It's a 2002 SL1. I bought it about two years ago. It belonged to the elderly sister of a friend of mine. It had about 49k miles then. She didn't drive it much (duh). Besides tires and a new battery to get it going, I've only had to replace a coil pack & control module and spark plugs/wires. It's pretty solid for it's age. Not the fastest thing in the world but it's a commuter car that can easily hold its own on the interstate. The only problems (for now) are cosmetic: the sun visor has basically rotted away to the frame and the headliner is coming unglued.

Have any goons bought a 400z? I think I saw one in the yellow with black roof on the freeway in Sunday. I was very intrigued by what Nissan claimed they would sell for, but I'm sure like everything else there are huge dealer markups.

Quick video of my son’s V70 exhaust. The PO couldn’t find an exhaust actually made for the V70 but they had this IPD 850R one laying about and had the exhaust shop adapt it to the non-turbo header. It’s pretty loud since it’s a 3” on an NA engine, but the 5-cylinder sounds decent enough once you’re actually driving along. Some gurgles and burbles for giggle factor. https://youtu.be/uB_4u-ujR5I

My mom had an AWD Civic wagon in the '90s with a 5 speed plus "Super low" that if I remember right was up and to the left. Being young and not very mechanically sympathetic, I would often start it in super low (as first), then do a shift as fast as I could into actual first... it was the only way to get that turd moving with any haste. Out with the old. In with the older. While the Lobo worked incredibly well for towing on pavement it struggled with towing offroad. Luckily 957 Cayennes have depreciated to the tune of 90%. Especially in Turbo S trim. Edit: In summary McTinkerson fucked around with this message at 01:42 on Feb 12, 2023 |

That sounds like torque steer, not wheel Hop - a limited slip diff helps that. Wheel Hop is when the whole car kind of shudders or bucks up and down on the drive wheels when doing a hard launch. Torque steer is just when a front wheel drive with an open diff car pulls to one side when accelerating hard due to only one wheel getting the majority of the power sent to it.

I'm pretty sure I have posted a picture of this same car before. A 2008 Honda Element. The first time we bought it. We were going to sell this to our oldest after they wrecked their Vibe at college, for maybe a quarter of market value. But they were hellbent on getting another Vibe, so they picked a true shitbox Vibe as a replacement. Instead, we sold this car to their boyfriend (still at a steep discount). He doesn't have much experience with doing auto repair, but he wants to learn and I gave them a full set of my old tools to get them on their way. Normal old car stuff came up in the course of them having it. The battery needed to get replaced, accessory belt needed to get replaced (he did that job), the starter motor. After finding the starter difficult to get to, he decided that he wanted "a car that was easier to work on" and asked if we wanted to buy it back, since we did ask that we get first pass if he decided to sell it. So I paid him $1,200 more than we sold it to him for. And now we are the proud owner....again....of this car. I have a full set of quick struts in the garage ready to install. Really the only maintenance thing I didn't do when we owned it.

I think most (all?) the N-Line models have been panned for bad torque steer due to open diffs. I know my Sonata is bad about it but I don't usually punch it out of a dig into a turn so I don't really notice at all that much.
