I don't know if it punched down on lower-class people so much that everyone sucked and life was absurd. Even if he did find a way to raise his own financial status, something would be there to drag him down, even if it's something as simple as "Al gets ahead of himself and ends up being screwed by a snotty, self-important rich guy who became rich literally by screwing people," and that the best he could hope for are the small victories in life.

Having said that, the show ran for 11 years and there are definitely examples and counter-examples depending on what the mood of the writers was. For example, inasmuch as a character like that in the '90s would have definitely been victim to gay panic writing, there was an episode where he meets Marcy's lesbian cousin and though it takes him some time to get used to it, he starts to understand it.

There's also an episode where Al brings together his old high school football team for a game against their old rivals. One of the star players appears in a dress and has transitioned. While they make the obvious jokes about them being uncomfortable, not much else is made of it. Furthermore, Marcy and all of the wives have no problem supporting their new "sister".

It's me, I'm the goon who still occasionally rewatches Married with Children.

there's also the episode where peg goes out with some dude, and later on al is confronted by the guy's husband. instead of being disgusted or whatever, he comes to greatly admire and respect the guy for being a better housewife/husband than peg ever was.

Well huh

quote:

In the interview, O'Neill shared that Bearse did not invite him or David Faustino, who played Bud, to her wedding, because she believed they would laugh at the sight of two women wearing tuxedos in a church.

O'Neill confronted her about not being invited. "I said, 'Amanda, what is funny about two women in tuxedos walking down the church aisle?' I started laughing, and she said, 'See!' I said, 'Well, you know why, because it is [expletive] funny, and I'm not going to be the only one that doesn't think so.' But it was funny. She had a little white tux—to me, I thought it was funny. So, in other words, she may not have been wrong in excluding me."

So yeah pretty lovely of him, but one would hope he's grown a little through working on something like Modern Family.

Yeah a lot of what would be considered bigoted and/or "politically incorrect" humor today was widespread among liberals. One joke I recall was that Ann Coulter is secretly a man, and this in turn led to a story-length joke in which a fearless liberal decided to find out the truth, complete with descriptions of rough sexual intercourse.

Back in 2017 Colbert was criticized for making a joke about Trump being Putin's "cock holster," but if he had done that same joke a decade earlier (presumably with Bush and King Abdullah or something because 2007) the only significant backlash would have come from Christian conservatives decrying it as vulgar language unfit for TV.

I think a lot of young people were drawn to the Democratic Party in the Bush era because of how closely the Republican Party was associated with Evangelicals. There were lots of persons back in 2016 hopeful that Trump would mark a "more moderate" shift in the Republican Party because he things like holding a pride flag. You also had the rise of Ben Shapiro and other "facts not feelings" conservatives who pretend to be exemplars of rational inquiry rather than just cite Bible verses and claim America will be crushed by God's wrath if it permits Adam and Steve to get legally married. Quite a lot of conservative arguments continue to revolve around claiming "the left has gone mad" whereas the GOP is the voice of sanity.

It's a bit cliche, but a lot of it is contrarianism. Bush and repubs were in charge, so being a dem was counter-culture. It's the same as thinking South Park is "Leftist" cus it made fun of Bush. Ultimately, the point was to be against whoever's in charge, rather than a coherent worldview.

Married... Had plenty of hate for the yuppies of the day via Marcy and Steve. Financially successful, a bit too clean, enviable and hated all the same. They probably drove subcompact foreign vehicles because they got such good mileage and composted and recycled and a bunch of other weird poo poo!

When the whole innicent newlywed counter to the Bundys thing ran its course they made Marcy the feminist strawman that early 90s/late 80s TV loved to poo poo on and then it continued as a thing in the show. Marcy was a shrew. Marcy wasn't conventionally attractive. Marcy had to bribe a pretty boy to maintain a relationship. Etc etc.

"Gay" was a perjorative/shorthand for weird on the show but it wasn't the crux of hatred the way feminism was. I remember that the guys on the show (the NoMaam slobs) got their hair done at a fancy salon and once they realized it was making them soft Al decided they should pop a fire hydrant open and "Wash the gay away".

Which, a bunch of grown men getting soaked and frolicking in the street, turns out to kind of be a :ssh: image.

Charles McGonigal, a 22-year veteran of the FBI until he retired in 2018, was arrested Saturday at John F. Kennedy International Airport when returning from international travel, a source familiar with the arrest told CNN. The charges, announced by the US attorney’s offices in the Southern District of New York and Washington, DC, mark a dramatic fall for McGonigal, who has surrendered his passport and is currently prohibited from any international travel."

If you pop a tire, hey, you want someone who knows how to change a tire.

Anything past that? The 'liberal' not only gives you a drink to keep body temp up but he also probably has an OBD connector to scan your error code, figure out what is wrong and either fix it or get you a lift to someone who can fix it. Or at least a gas station down the road so you don't freeze in the car.

The conservative idea of masculinity always seems to be the dumbest, most brutish rear end in a top hat. Their version of men never take a second to think through their actions, it's always 'act immediately and forcefully in the most dickish way possible'.

You can also flip the script in multiple ways so as to create any hypothetical scenario and thus render the concept meaningless.

"when you're broken down on the side of the road in -15°, do you want a new age soy boy who just happens to have a degree in automotive engineering and worked at his family repair shop to pay for school? Or do you want some old school, traditional, so called "toxic masculinity" to come & insist he knows what he's doing but constantly gently caress things up because 'how hard could it be?'".

He's trying to be encouraging with his replies, but he's the kind of person who refuses to acknowledge what any criticism like "toxic masculinity" means so he's just creating his own definitions that still allow him to be an rear end in a top hat.

Man this poo poo is never going to go away, is it? I recall homophobia about gay men being groomers for a long time, then gay marriage got legal and I guess they shifted to trans people in bathrooms and prisons for a while. Then there was this molestation case involving two gay men and the first narrative came roaring back.

This particular tactic seems to involve implicating the LGBT community for 'silence'. People like him pretend they aren't explicitly accusing gay people as a whole of being child molestors, but do blame others for not speaking out enough about it in their own communities.

I actually wrote a paper on Married With Children in university. One thing that I came across while doing my research was an interview with one of the producers, in which he mentioned that they would often pack the studio audience by handing out free tickets at a nearby military base. As such, they ended up with an audience that would cheer loudly for all of the worst moments.

Anyway, I wished I lived in the reality that Telegraph opinion columnists are writing from:
