Edit - I felt sure I already asked this before, but apparently not.

The bagging area is where you put your groceries after the scan, it weighs the items to see if you are stealing/grabbing the wrong things. I used to work on these, the reason the bagging area bugs out so much is the scales on them are not great and if you overweight them they can't zero out properly, a child sitting/jumping on them is enough to break them until the store resets the scale(they never know how) or calls a technician.

About half a decade ago, when they were first rolling out self-checkout lines, they'd have a scale that would detect how much weight was resting in the baggage area. The idea was that if somebody rings in a can of coke and puts in a two liter, well, the machine would notice it - there was an element of verification to self-checkout to avoid people just stealing things. Unfortunately, between the inaccuracies of a sensitive scale and the vagaries of modern inventory, you'd put in a package of ham that seemed to weight a little bit too heavy, tripping the machine's alarms. And since you weren't actually trying to steal groceries, removing the offending item wouldn't fix the problem, and you'd have to wait for a worker to come over and use their badge, maybe take a look at what you're scanning if they were particularly hard workers.

They've mostly done away with the scales because 1.) most people aren't trying to steal groceries by scanning them in, so it was almost always a false alarm, 2.) having to fix the issue limited how many machines you could have per attendant, and 3.) it annoyed customers and therefore caused them to wait in line instead of giving the grocery free labor. Since they're already saving the $XX per hour in not having to pay people to scan items, grocery stores mostly decided to accept the (miniscule) cost of people scanning in a can of soda that costs a dollar less than what they're buying.

It used to be a much bigger problem, and still it at stores with old self checkouts I guess. Most big chains have ones that do theft prevention via image recognition now, which still has occasional false positives but at least the machine isn't screaming at you the whole time for not moving your groceries quickly enough.

A Russian spy is briefed that there are confidential documents in a Rall cartoon and is sent to infiltrate it. Immediately one of his shoulders slumps a few inches and his hands wither to twigs. But he knew this would be a difficult mission and carries on unperturbed. After navigating a nonsensical corridor he tries to open a door but it's stuck because the door frame is half the size and also a triangle. He kicks it open and busts into the room, and floats away into white space

And the USA had riots in 2020 and 2016. If you want to be spicy, it even had a minor attempt at revolution Jan 6th, albeit for deeply ignorant reasons.

I don’t fundamentally disagree with Rall that countries have had their citizenry duped into failing to understanding their collective power, but it’s hardly unique to the USA. I guess I’ll eat my words if we see France overthrow the current government and install a socialist/communism/anarchist system. Or have countries like the UK discovered ethical capitalism and have no problems with wealth disparity?

Well there are big demonstrations happening in France right now.

The UK is probably also incapable of revolution, they got it done exactly once and then 20 years later were right back to begging a family of inbred pedophiles to rule over them once again.
