I don't remember these at all, I think I'd rather just toast some raisin bread or eat a muffin than have this weird midpoint.

The Ego’s Toaster Muffins were good, especially the cinnamon, but not as good as the Howard Johnson’s Toastees, which were amazing.

I ate this on English muffins as a kid. Also made the Chef Boyardee Pizza Kit, which was non buono.

I got these a while back. The casu marzu was a bit funkier and saltier than a standard cheese chip, the fugu had szechuan peppercorn in it, and horse was entirely unmemorable.

It's the same reason you rarely see black currant flavored drinks and candies in the US. The import and cultivation of both crops were banned for most of the twentieth century (the ban on Sichuan peppercorns was lifted in 2005, for black currant the federal ban was lifted in 1966 but state bans didn't start to get lifted until the early 2000s) and as a result the US hasn't really developed a taste for them and even though they're no longer banned they're not exactly commonly available because the demand isn't there yet. I've had Chinese dishes in the US that normally call for Sichuan peppercorns and in my experience if it's a decent restaurant they'll still be spicy, just lacking in that distinctive tingly ma flavor.

Same for Szechuan peppers, but I know where to find them now.

you might want to temper expectations. pandas are thin on the ground these days so it's artificial panda flavoring.

Why were Szechuan peppercorns banned? And yeah, they did suddenly show up in my local Szechuan place, first in “Lamb with Strange Flavor” then as the renamed “Lamb with Szechuan Pepper” (also lots of cilantro/coriander).

(for anyone who missed this discussion before, black currants were banned here because they hosted a species of blight that devastated commercial pine farms :capitalism: )

You can get Szechuan peppercorns from Penzey’s Spices if you’re in the US and don’t have Asian markets nearby.

I recently tried vanilla ice cream with sansho peppercorns, either ground sansho or ground Szechuan pepper (they're closely related and offer very similar numbing effects), and a drizzle of Thai sweet chili sauce. It was really good.

Sichuan peppers are not peppers but the dried outside of a citrus-adjacent fruit which can carry blight that also affects things like oranges.

I added szechys and mandarin peel to the second ferment of a kombucha last year, which I highly recommend. Was delicious as a drink and probably would have been a great marinade, too.

This reminds me of something. Over a decade ago I was browsing the Kikkoman website for... whatever. Anyway, they suggested using soy sauce on vanilla ice cream. The pic on the website was just a scoop of ice cream doused in soy sauce. They seem to have revamped the recipe - It's now a butterscotch sundae.
