They counted only those buried in Russian cemeteries at ~60 specific settlements, and estimate that number to be 40-60% of the total Russian regular forces killed. So 20k-30k at minimum, and this doesn't include separatists or Wagner. I guess that's one way of underselling your losses.

How the gently caress are we going to source export-ready Abrams? AFAIK we don't have any on-hand and I don't think that General Dynamics can tool up and start rolling them off the lines in less than a year.

Yeah they gave 10k last month since they are looking at public data, but don't give a strong reason why it would be only 40-60% of the total. In total, it would be about 10-12k dead and 30-35k wounded from available data. Btw, the Mediazone survey includes everything from social media, local media, offical reports, to photographs and data from military cemeteries. Also, the may be other issues with the data such as 4 general are claimed dead, but only 2 regular army generals have been publically confirmed while another retired general and they also killed a separatist general. So it is unclear if some data is leaking over, especially if for example if separtists are buried in Russian territory, also Wagner data is unclear. lollontee posted:i've seen 25k-35k for russian losses being thrown around, THEE ukraine's losses at around the same? by all looks, this war has been an absolute meatgrinder for both sides They are likely very high all things considered, there is really no way to say for certain, probably a couple times higher. The problem is the Ukrainian government has been very closed lipped about losses. That said, it seems since late spring 2022 that more and more of the losses have been on the Ukrainian side as artillery has come into play. Man it's hard to place losses from modern warfare in the same reality as what was going on 80 years ago.. You read so much cope about how Russia is nearing their breaking point with 30,000 to 40,000 casualties in a year and then wikipedia tells you that like 600,000 Russian soldiers got surrounded and surrendered around Kiev one week back in WW2.

euphronius posted:Russia losing that many makes there current more conservative approach make sense Supposedly, according to mediazone data, the death rate has been dropping pretty steadily they were losing about 400 a week during the initial invasion, 150-200 in the Spring 2022, and it down to 50-70 a week now, so yeah their ability to keep numbers down has certainly improved. I think a lot of it is just the reduced capabilities of the Ukrainian army which initially was able to put up a strong fight but over time has been atrophying a lot of that is probably down to artillery (and just how chaotic the initial invasion was). But I would say the original data Mediazone is pretty extensive if they are not only utilizing official reports, cemetery data, local reports but also social media posts and photographs. It is hard to keep a lid over all of that. Ardennes has issued a correction as of 17:15 on Jan 25, 2023 |
