He totally gave coworker vibe. It's that weird always present half grin on his face, and you could tell he made every single person he spoke to kind of uncomfortable, but he was technically doing nothing wrong, so they didn't know how to get out of the conversation. That moment though when he was speaking with an audience, and one of the audience members asked him, "Wasn't your first marriage to a Russian mail order bride a form of sex work?" You could tell that it had literally never even occurred to him, he just sat there with a blank look on his face for what felt like a full minute, but was probably only like 15 seconds.

Oscar nominations are out. Here's how to watch each one:

All Quiet on the Western Front - Netflix
Avatar The Way of Water - Only in theaters
The Banshees of Insherin - HBO Max
Elvis - HBO Max
Everything Everywhere All At Once - Showtime
The Fabelmans - Video on demand
TAR - Peacock
Top Gun Maverick - Paramount Plus
Triangle of Sadness - Video on demand
Women Talking - Only in theaters

This is maybe the first year where I've seen the majority of the best picture nominations before the nominations were even announced, I still need to see All Quiet, Fabelmans, and Women Talking.

Avatar and Top Gun were both great, but I don't expect either one to stand a chance. Elvis was kind of a bloated mess, but the Academy has a real hardon for biopics. Tar was a bit of a difficult watch for me, superbly acted, but kind of miserable. Triangle of Sadness was a surprising nomination, I watched it mostly because I'm a big Below Deck fan, and I was curious to see a movie that was kind of spoofing the Bravo reality show, and I thought it was great. It's too low profile though to win. For me, the two I want to win are between Banshees and EEAAO, I'd be happy with either win.

yeah elvis was a bit long but it was cool background tv, i hope it wins the background tv award

ill check out all quiet today

heres my reviews and anticipations

Avatar The Way of Water - epic...ally long. there's like 90 minutes of cgi monkeys swimming with space whales. by the time the action starts again you just want to go home

The Banshees of Insherin - this is supposed to be a comedy???

Everything Everywhere All At Once - pretty cool

The Fabelmans - more like video not on demand. haha. i'll watch this when it's free

TAR - this is free right now and I liked the drummer one so this one might be cool. i remember the trailer looked cool. going to check it out

Top Gun Maverick - America's back baby!

Triangle of Sadness - I watch every dramedy known to man so I will probably watch this too

Women Talking - Only in theatres. I'm not sitting on the movie theater upholstery to watch this

Still have to see Fabelmans and Banshees but it feels like it's been a weak year (surprised Triangle of Sadness made it...that was...fine). Honestly RRR might be better than all of those.
I thought Tar was fine (a bit boring honestly) but it's shocking seeing the people declaring it some transcendent masterpiece.

Two international films nominated for Best Picture but not RRR? Shame. Same with Emma Thompson not getting nominated. She was great in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

Top Gun getting nominated for best screenplay is great though. Good to see McQuarrie get recognized as a great action writer.

I watched Paul T Goldman on Peacock. I was okay with it when they started and they were just doing the reenactments about his life. But as the series went on, he continued to admit that he made more and more of it up. And then the show kind of lost me as they started filming sequels to his life story, that were no longer based in reality at all, and he was trying to build his own cinematic universe starring him and his clearly uninterested son in their efforts to take down an international human trafficking scheme run by his ex-wife. At first I was optimistic that he was in on the joke, but he only thinks he's in on the joke. The man is truly delusional.

I also watched season 1 of American Auto, which is competent, but not particularly funny.

That's where Paul T. Goldman lost us also. The fictional sequel stuff went on too long and the joke never evolved. It's like someone repeating a punchline over and over because they think you didn't get it the first time when in reality it was just a bad joke. Aside from that, it was a great show. I don't know what was real or not*, but it's easy to imagine what the "real" story was and what was Paul's assumptions, embellishments, and self-deception.

I think it becomes pretty clear what’s real and what’s not by the end. The issue with it (if your are so inclined to have an issue) is that it’s not just exploitative of this unwell dude encouraging, enabling, and platforming his lies and delusions but it’s also knowingly taking part in that lie by withholding any meaningful counter until the end. The director obviously recognized the problem and seemed to feel some guilt over stringing this dude along for 10 years but the idea that it’s all ok because they have purposely avoided fact checking him until the end for fear of finding out he was lying rings pretty self serving and hollow to me.

I mean, it's up to you. I think it's one of the best shows of the last several years, and it's won a ton of praise and awards. The characters aren't meant to be likable, but if that's what you want, I guess you might like Ted Lasso.

I would probably suggest people start with season 2, to be honest. In S1, you have to be kind of amused at how awful most of the characters are, and how insufferable they are is often the joke. Eventually you get caught up in the minor developments of their characters or lack thereof. I enjoyed it when it first came out, but I liked it more when rewatching it after S2 when I kind of knew "the deal" more.

I was annoyed with season 1 for the same reason and liked season 2 better. Vague, nonspecific spoiler about the ending: In the first season I felt everyone didn't get what they deserved, but in the 2nd season I was mostly satisfied that everyone got what they deserved. For better or worse.

The whole show feels a bit weird because it seems like you should hate the characters but then the way it plays out it feels like the show wants you to like these character as if they're good but flawed people and not just a bunch of assholes.

Yeah, same. Season 2 had some actual direction, plots developing, things happening, and some denouement. Season 1 by comparison just felt very aimless, just a bunch of assholes being assholes to each other no point to it.

It's strange because probably my favorite current show is Succession and none of those characters are very likeable, but what they are is compelling. I want to see what happens with Shiv and Roman et al, and I don't give a single gently caress what happens to cunty rich girl or overly attached plastic surgery monster or ultra-douchey trust fund guy. Maybe that will change as the show goes on.

I don't think it needs to be about loving or hating the characters. One of the things I like about WL is that it presents these characters as realistic humans who go through things like loving everything up even while having the best intentions, loving things up while in self-denial about their own intentions, stumbling into relationships they weren't expecting, etc. It feels like an actual possible slice of life at these random resorts instead of just like, "lovely people the tv show."

Succession is good. The characters are conflicted internally by their consciences and it runs up against their expected characterizations, which later in the series you see is more of a facade to fit in with the other rich psychos

The pilot really seemed to tee up how devastatingly bad finance is for the people who work there and the world at large and then a few eps later you're encouraged to cheer for Harper to successfully lie her way through cheating her client and her coworkers to make some more money for the company.
