No, it's the prop spinner. You definitely do not want to be spinning something with a crack in it at more than 2000 RPM, especially when it is right in front of your propeller and your windshield. You check the spinner for cracks on every preflight walkaround. I don't know what kind of plane that is in the picture, but as noted, some aircraft cannot legally be flown with a missing spinner. How would removing the prop spinner result in an overheat?
|
# ? Jan 26, 2023 16:11 |

Most light aircraft engines are forced-air cooled. The cooling intakes are generally right behind the prop. When the spinner is removed it exposes the big flat propeller hub, and the turbulence created by that hub disrupts the smooth flow of air into the cooling ducts.

Christ. As the top comment in that thread correctly notes, with that unbalanced doubling plate and all those rivets, he's added the equivalent of like a thousand pounds of off-center force when the prop is at full speed. Best case it's just going to fly apart and disappear, worst case it shakes so much it trashes his engine bearings or breaks welds and either leads to a crash or totals the plane. What a moron.

When I read "Another crack opened up on the other side of the spinner" I thought it was saying a 2nd crack opened beside the 1st patched one. But that's at least the 3rd crack. (4th if you count the patch cracking too)

Boeing needs to figure out how to get something out of all the blended wing concepts they’ve been doing since the 90s. This plane looks much smaller than I would think, or else those aren’t windows. Or maybe giant windows. Regardless, this appears to be more bizjet sized? And the ducts+engine location would seem to indicate that there’s not much room for cargo? I could see it being a small tanker at least but when you say “stealth cargo plane” I’m thinking you’re intending to insert some door kickers hobbesmaster fucked around with this message at 22:07 on Jan 26, 2023 |

Refuling ops seem pretty ideal for drones so I don’t see why they’re even bothering with windows to begin with.

Cargo plane engine inlets are traditionally mounted inches abound the ground, right? That’s a good idea and everyone does that, yeah? This seems like boeing C-team effort.

The Boeing thing looks like what you'd get if you asked someone from the 80s for a futuristic plane. The Lockheed Martin thing is what you'd get on a 60's BBC children's program involving puppets and space ships (and despite my earlier comment, is ugly as gently caress)
