A little late to Japan chat but if you read the Barrier and the Javelin, about their campaigns in 1942, they had no idea the British, Dutch and Americans would give way like that. The IJA was supposed to be a sideshow why the IJN waited for the climactic battle and instead overnight their reconnaissance detachments were seizing oilfields almost without a fight. They had no idea that they were going to get all the way to Rangoon, or New Guinea, let alone Manilla, within the first months of the war.

In hindsight people either don’t discuss their overwhelming successes, or compare it to Blitzkrieg, but really it was practically by accident and they had to do some really crazy planning to reroute troopships on the fly as the places they were supposed to land at had already fallen.

Can't wait for gamification to fully take over. Roll a lottery for your MOS gear, you might get the five star Next Generation Squad Weapon, a four star M16 that was brought from Afghanistan, or most likely a beat up rifle older than you.

Do you not have to go on your Primary Leadership Course + a trade specific course (Machinegun Team Leader, Gun 2IC, Tank Gunner, Infantry Section 2IC etc.) to be an E-4? That's equivalent to a Master Bombardier, Caporal-chef, Stabskorporal etc. etc. and generally entails leading a combat element in battle, not... referring a friend.

Does it just mean you get a slot on the course, or...?

E4 can mean a 'specialist' or a corporal, a corporal would be someone generally on track to be promoted to E5 and eligible for PLDC or WLC or whatever it might be called now. A specialist is just an older lazier PFC.

this has been a thing for decades afaik

definitely not no. army specialist is just a private with three more ranks. usmc corporal is expected to begin doing leadership stuff and qualifies to start getting sent to leader courses, but it’s not universal- in most cases you make corporal right before getting out of the usmc, and I know whether intended or not many (most?) corporals don’t get leadership courses beyond what’s basically a book and set of homework. You are expected to do “on the job” leadership training and get mentorship. I believe army corporals it’s similar (army corporals are e-4s like specialists, but have leadership responsibilities)

edit: beaten

imo it depends on how common corporals are in a given mos (every mos has different “cutting score” thresholds to get promoted)

Is there a reason for the pay and responsibility imbalance between the Americans and CW? British, Canadian and Australian Corporals get paid about the same as American Sergeants and have the same responsibility. For example, a Corporal leading an 8 man infantry section with a Lance 2IC was the norm, (until the 90’s when they inflated ranks during the pay freeze as an incentive to stay) now it’s a Master Corporal and Corporal.

I’ve read articles where an American with 7 or 8 years was a Sergeant (maybe Staff Sergeant) where here they’d be a Master Corporal.

It’s probably not as deep as culture of leadership, way of war, blah blah blah, I’m just curious why that might be? Promotions as incentive?

Americans also get way more medals than us. I won’t post my rack, but the Brigadier General commanding the Staff College has fewer medals than what seems to be an American Corporal who was good at pushups:

I will say, here it’s the norm (though I can’t find a policy) that the Reserve Force promotes twice as quickly as the Regular Force. I’ve always heard that was an retention incentive as well. It caused a lot of problems in the later years of Afghanistan where the Reserves were 50% of the force, but were not really interchangeable. Now they usually knock them down one rank when they transfer to the Regular Force which is deeply unpopular (on their side) and probably not sustainable.

to clarify, the army keeps a running tally of every E4 and E5's good boy points and when they get empty slots at E5 and E6, they grab the first X names on that tally

this means that some people will never get above E4 because there simply aren't any slots because nobody with one of those slots is leaving, and some people will make E6 because they have a pulse and anyone with a brain got out already

But if a Regiment only has an establishment with so many Sergeants, how would an Army-wide list help? It doesn’t help you if a slot opened up somewhere else.

in the us the ranks are locked army wide, not by unit, except for low ranks like e4 and below. So you can be slotted in a position below you rank, though it generally not a huge problem

(I have a picture of my first deployment and by the end we had a major, 4 captains, 2 e8s, 6 e7s and a bunch of other promotions)

(I held a position slotted for an e6 while I was an e5 e6 and for a time as an e7, idk it worked out ok)

the usaf straight up got rid of normal sergeants at e4 at some point since my dad got out, and the space force got created with specialists only up to e-4, really just the navy/marines that still reserve e-4 for ncos only

guess if you're close to water you get paid less for some reason
