There is one brand of boiler, and to fix it you must get spare part from Zgorzelec, but you are not allowed to travel to Zgorzelec because pass book is wrong colour, and you cannot ship part without paperwork, but you cannot get paperwork without contact, and you cannot get contact without passbook.

Everything that they used to joke in the 80s about communism has come true under capitalism etc etc.

HS2 chat

They've found some interesting archaeology in some parts they've dug up, haven't they?

That's nice!
Yes they definitely have, though I'm out of the loop so I couldn't say exactly how much. This page https://www.hs2.org.uk/building-hs2/archaeology/ has details of some nice things at least.

From my time in developer funded commercial archaeology
i) work may have been under undue time pressure, developers often want the pesky archaeologists to gently caress off yesterday and stop interrupting their much more important work..
ii) developer can sometimes specify how much archaeology is done, i/e. sampling/excavation of only 20%. This always pissed me off, there is no way to know in advance which 20% is most important. In projects like this where the archaeology is going to be completely nuked by development it's even more annoying.
iii)Not all units are equal. I worked for more than one where stuff that wasn't on the 'brief' could just be slid past as too time consuming and potentially annoying to the developer paying the bills.
Star example being my find of a bunch of Mesolithic flints on a possible preserved ancient land surface (very rare). The supervisor over me said "Very nice. You can keep them if you like. Carry on"
I insisted that the flints at least got recorded and kept. I later lucked into a way to alert the county archaeologist (friend of a friend networking). He made a surprise visit and made a point of 'finding' them in the finds store, the land surface was gone by then though. :(
Since HS2 is so high profile a project none of this may apply as badly as what I've seen or heard of. Certainly at least some of the units are very good. But...

Oh they absolutely do.
Though a Demo is not a bootleg and the former are more likely to be worth money.
Some rare boots will be valuable but the very nature of cassette boots means that quality control is pretty patchy/non existant - the 4th generation copy of a copy of an audience recording will usually be pretty unlistenable imo.

If you have a good first generation copy from a bootlegger with serious kit, or better yet a mixing desk recording, that's a different story. Better quality tapes - Chrome, Metal also add possible value.
Discogs blocks boots from sale so no way to check possible price range easily. You'd need to connect with relevant band fandom. Much easier with the internet ofc. :)

When I gave it a go last week I got bored and tried to spark some kind of sentience in it by asking it to speculate or derive an approximate output for something it didn't have the info for.

All I got back were fancy worded messages that ultimately said "I am just a database'.

They were on the radio the other day. She was mentally unwell, had been sectioned a few times and had developed a belief that her family wanted to kill her.

But even so there was something off about them in the interview. But who knows how a family that was split apart by mental health issues years ago and then finds the family members body are supposed to act I guess.

Some people just aren’t close to their family whether mental illness is involved or not.

It doesn’t even have to involve a falling out or any kind of trauma, not everyone is wired up to feel the need to have their family involved in their lives forever.

Honestly if I wasn’t married to my wife who insists on at the very least seeing my mum every Christmas I wouldn’t have had any contact with any of my family for over a decade now.

There was a good 4-5 year span after I first moved out that I had zero contact with anyone in my family just out of apathy. I didn’t need to speak to them and they didn’t feel the need to reach out I guess, and that’s not a sad thing or a terrible thing it just is what it is.
