Well you see we COULD make our ammo locally but the cost benefit analysis is that it's just best to buy from China. We have a duty to responsible corporate accounting.

Anyway that's why it's on backorder with no ETA.

Why didn't we beat Russia after all the jokes and memes about rusty tanks and stuff? Ukranian corruption. It's perfect. It's not OUR fault.

Also it's not Ukraine anymore, just extended Russia and the greater Polish Commonwealth with a narrow demilitarised zone in the middle. Sadly everyone to blame is no longer around and can't add their own 2 cents. Oh well.

It's quite interesting to debate over whether this is true or whether the Minsk treaties were signed in good faith but now various politicians who were involved in the signing in 2014 (which have now become very unpopular in Ukraine and elsewhere) are trying to retroactively justify how they were actually brilliant strategists who foresaw this war from almost a decade back and thanks to them Ukraine has a fighting chance.

On one hand I can totally see the NATO powers never having any intention of a peaceful resolution of the differences between Ukraine and Russia. On the other hand these politicians would totally lie and claim that they had done something for the opposite reasons of their previous public statements if they believed the new statements are what will make them popular and salvage their legacy.

**as people pointed out in the twitter comments if their intention was to use the 8 years to prepare for a war they did an awful job by any metric other than building defensive fieldworks and fortifications in the Donbas region. Ukraine was so disorganized at the start of the conflict they let the Russians just walk into Kherson without blowing the bridges, they let their Nazi force get completely cut off and surrounded in Mariupol and they had built up seemingly no stockpiles of munitions at all since they were instantly begging for supplies from the west despite claiming to be outgunned 10 to 1.. Seems like Russia was the one that prepared in the 8 years if anything.

I kind of feel that they lowballed by only offering 25 million for shells they desperately need.

25 million for a warehouse full of aluminium rods maybe. But ammo? And you're desperate? And it comes at a substantial potential diplomatic cost to the prospective seller?

Get the gently caress out of here with that poo poo. Go back to the embassy and look yourself in the mirror, then without saying anything drink a whole bottle of bourbon and tell yourself you did a good job. Nobody else will.

Also no. If they were actually preparing then why was the Russian army set up for small scale engagements, lacking the logistic units needed to act far from rail systems, the mobilization system dismantled, and the Donbas militias only handed the oldest cast-offs? A lot of people seemed to have happily worked towards making this war happen, but no one really seemed to think that it would.

Ukraine prepared by ideologically hardening their populace. That's why things like Mariupol were possible. I'd say it was a net positive for Ukraine. It tied Russia up for quite a while for what, a few thousand lives? The Kherson bridges were probably a mistake but overall Ukraine's done pretty well. It seemed like it did a good job of shepherding it's limited assets at the start of the conflict.
It's not like Ukraine is a command economy or something, any preparation had to be accomplished whilst working around many competing interests.

A whistleblower at Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) shared with Newsweek a leaked letter that claimed Russia was "quite seriously preparing for a localized military conflict with Japan" in August 2021. Russia's propaganda machine was also initiated, with a huge push to label Japanese as "Nazis" and "fascists."

"Confidence that the countries would enter the stage of acute confrontation and even war was high. Why Ukraine was chosen for war in the end [the scenario was not changed much] is for others to answer," they wrote. Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The plans for war with Japan may have been related to a longstanding territorial dispute concerning the strategically important Kuril Islands, which are occupied by Russia but claimed by Japan.

Russia and Japan previously fought in what is now known as the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905. The war was decisively won by the Empire of Japan, delivering what was then a shocking defeat to the Russian Empire. The conflict was fought over the countries' rival expansionist ambitions in China and Korea.

"Russia's humiliating defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 had profound effects," a 2016 paper published in the journal Foreign Policy Analysis said. "Domestically, it accelerated revolutionary discontent in Russia and enhanced Japan's national image as a modern state."

"Internationally, it shattered long-standing beliefs in European military dominance, triggered a major loss of prestige for Russia, removed any doubts about Japan's status as the newest great power, and redefined the balance of power in the Far East," it added.

The FSB, in August 2021, declassified information concerning the brutal torture of Soviet citizens by Japanese special services during World War II.

The FSB whistleblower suggested that this was part of an "information campaign against Japan" that could be used to help condition Russians for the planned 2021 attack.

lmao who is this even written for? Other dumb californians living in fantasy circle jerk land? Well I suppose its a target audience.
