And some of the gang gave up so much material recently that their armored spearheads are now reduced to a cyclist company in Lycra shorts.

Imagine one NATO county asking another for help, urgently. "Send everything you can!". And then only 5 percent of what they have on paper shows up. Everything else is broken, unserviceable or they flat out don't have the munitions to actually arm all their functional platforms simultaneously. Missiles are expensive! You think they just keep a bunch lying around?!?

Australia sold their landing ship because they didn't have enough sailors to man it, so clearly they're depending on the US for a ride, even in their own backyard.

Now ask yourself how much of what else we have is even crewed to the point where it can sail or fly.

I'm sure we can still send... Something. One thingie maybe. Coalition of the willing!

In 2022 there was a plan to increase Australian defence force numbers by 18500 personnel.

Target date? 2040.

Plan budget? 38 billion, with a "b".

I won't go into the initiatives but they're all wildly off the mark to the point of farce and the whole plan amounts to driving a fancy 4wd into mud, sinking up to the roof, then spinning the wheels endlessly while pouring money into the engine via a large funnel and claiming it's working.

the Australian navy has two light aircraft carriers (technically 'landing helicopter docks') that are based on a design intended to carry fixed-wing aircraft and have a pronounced ski jump, but they do not actually have any carrier-based fixed wing aircraft and do not plan to acquire any, so the ski jump doesn't do anything and is just a huge waste of space and weight

All of the below refer to different ship classes, covering the whole RAN surface fleet

quote:

Hugh White, a former leading defence planner for the Hawke and Howard Governments, ANU Professor and defence writer for the SMH, has long been a critic of the decision to acquire the Canberra-class ships. In 2004 he argued that the Australian Defence Force did not need the capacity to conduct a major opposed amphibious operation, as it was unlikely to ever be called upon to do so, and the money needed to purchase the vessels would be better spent on smaller amphibious ships and other defence capabilities.[17] In 2016 White judged the ships to be a 'terrible and heroic, waste of money and nothing more than, 'big, fat... targets in the South China Sea'.[18] which are too vulnerable for deployment in a serious crisis.

quote:

In October 2010, the 20-by-17-metre (66 by 56 ft) central keel block manufactured by BAE for Hobart was found to be distorted and incompatible with other hull sections.[32] The cause of the fabrication errors is unknown: BAE blamed incorrect drawings from designer Navantia, while the AWD Alliance claimed the other two shipyards have not experienced similar problems, when in fact they had,[33][34][35] and suggested first-of-kind manufacturing errors were made by BAE.[32][36] However, a report in 2014, by the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) confirmed that 'errors resulting from a sub-standard technology transfer procedure (passing on specific techniques relative to the design) & drawings that were not localised by designer Navantia' were to blame.[37] The delay in reworking the keel block was predicted to set construction back by at least six months.[32] Other major issues during Hobart's construction included the need to replace 25% of the internal pipework due to faulty manufacture, and the initial rejection of the ship's mainmast block because of defects in the cabling and combat system equipment.[33][34] Brisbane's construction has been marred by numerous defects requiring rework.[34]

quote:

In order to get the best capability for the cheapest price, the Australian Department of Defence opted to have Kaman acquire 40-year-old SH-2F Seasprite airframes decommissioned by the United States Navy, and fit modern flight systems to the reconditioned airframes.[67] This approach led to major delays, and the helicopters were found to be inoperable in low-visibility conditions.[65][67] By 2006, ten of the helicopters had been delivered, but none were permitted to fly.[65]

quote:

However, a malfunction in the sewage treatment facilities aboard HMAS Maitland in August 2006 pumped hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide into the compartment, non-fatally poisoning four sailors working inside[2][15] resulting in use of the compartment as accommodation being heavily restricted across the class.[2][16] In 2010, allegations were made to The Australian that a sailor working in the austere compartment on a different vessel had been gassed with hydrogen sulphide, and carbon monoxide was regularly detected in the enclosed space.[15]

If they deploy with a USA group might soak up a hostile missile that could have hit something actually valuable.
