For me the benefit is higher mag base and growth so he gets more use out of the radiant bow, which is glued to him. Otherwise it's not great.

Default Fogado has been nowhere near as useful as default Alcryst but he’s been decent for mag bow usage, the sword backup type and his cav mobility.

On Hard I find Fogado to be the best of my archers at taking out fliers. Alcryst and Etie have higher strength but enemy wyverns have reached a point where they have just enough HP and Defense to take one bow shot and enough speed to not get doubled by them. Cupido Fogado on the other hand has a 65% speed growth. I think he's actually the fastest unit on my team so he doubles and KOs them effortlessly. The extra movement is handy for sniping fliers as well.

Sleng Teng
May 3, 2009

Huh. My alcryst still doubles fliers in the ch 20+ range and he crits + luna procs constantly besides. Hard convo to have without fixed growths I guess. Bows are great!

Here’s my question: I want to try timerra next go around but she kinda was flat in this run. What’s the play? Super def tanky for the class skill, with some dex help for the proc?

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

Yeah Alcryst has also turned out awesome for me. He's one of my most reliable enemy-deleters, especially when his personal skill triggers a few times. When Fogado showed up Alcryst was better than him in every way except movement already. But also I'm on hard with random growths so I don't know how he holds up on maddening.

SyntheticPolygon

My Alcryst has refused to get speed. I think Fogado is +6 speed on him with better def and res as well.

AGDQ 2018 Awful Block Survivor
So I’m having a very funny time in Chapter 13 Maddening with Alcryst camping in bushes and dodging all the fliers that try to kill him while everyone else does the rest of the map. Alcryst is doing wonders for me in this run. I also realised that Jean would get 0 defense if I kept him as a Hero so after promoting from swords, I reclassed him into Warrior and slapped Lynn on him due to his ludicrously high Dex and Speed. Needless to say, the kid is a murder machine.

I feel that I am enjoying the gameplay of Engage more than Three Houses due to the flexibility of the job system and the lack of needing to grind weapon ranks. You can do a lot with your characters and finding the combinations has been really fun, even on maddening. I do feel like the DLC makes it significantly easier as once you realise how to do Tiki’s paralogue, you can gain a frankly absurd amount of experience. This is outside the stat boosters and Rivals Emblem Bracelet.

So, getting bond levels up to 5 for inheritance is pretty cheap compared to the amount of fragments you get, huh?

I've taken to getting my main fighters so far up to 5 with Marth so they can pick up Perceptive. 250 SP for a scaling Avo buff when initiating combat seems like a very good investment considering how player phase intensive this game seems to be.

In general getting bond levels up in the arena is really cheap. It gets expensive when you want to get to like 15+ on multiple units at once but you also don't need to do that often enough that it's a real resource problem.

For reference, I haven't been shy about leveling up bond in the arena, and I am just now actually running low on bond fragments after Chapter 22, and that's only because I just went on a "get some expensive skills on like five of my units" spree all at once. And now that I think about it I haven't cashed in my achievements in a couple chapters, so I might not even be running low at all.

or at least if you spend bond pts to speed level emblem bonds, those bond pts translate to 1SP each as well. Like if I wanna spend 3000+bond pts to push one emblem straight from 1-15, they get that 3000sp from it as well.

Another question about Emblem training:

Now that I'm starting to get immediate wants out of the way, I'm thinking about assigning Emblems to start work towards proficiencies for unlocking future classes. I also noticed on the wiki that most mounted/hybrid classes tend to restrict to A or B rank weapons.

Is this a big deal, or is it worth it to stay in the focused classes that get s-ranks weapons?

IMO the S-rank weapons are cool but they're not remotely worth planning a character's whole build around.

That said, characters get +1 weapon rank with their specialty weapons. For example, the lance version of Griffin Knight normally has A-rank lances, but Chloe has lance talent, so she can use S-ranks.

Better to focus class skills (and growths I guess if you are looking at wikis) instead of A vs S rank weapons.

Yeah, and what's kind of fun is that, sort of like the hidden talents in 3H, it's not always the weapon type you'd expect. Panette's talent is with daggers, for example, not axes.

Something I can't quite figure out is why a weapon talent sometimes doesn't seem to actually apply. For example, Citrinne, as you'd expect, specializes in tomes. She gets +1 tome rank as a High Priest, for example. But she doesn't as a Mage Knight--she gets A-rank tomes, just like Anna or anyone else does.

But it's not like weapon talents don't apply to Mage Knight. Louis has a talent with lances and if I were to make him a Mage Knight for some reason, he'd have A-rank lances instead of the normal B.

So I'm not really sure what the pattern is.

my understanding is that s ranks require you to be in a given class that 'specialises' (to some degree) in that weapon and also have a character specialisation. mage knights get swords and tomes so they can't get an s rank in either, unlike a class with just one specialisation (or something like griffin knight which gets its weapon + staves)

Zulily Zoetrope

Best I can figure is that it won't boost a rank from A to S unless it is a class with only one weapon type, not counting staves. Paladins get the bump, as do Griffon and Royal knights. Mage knight gets two types of weapon, so it can't get the S rank, but still lets you upgrade B to A.

And I guess daggers also don't count because wolf knight can get S in daggers.

Yeah that does seem to be the pattern. You can't reach S-rank unless it's the class's only (combat) weapon type, with a couple of exceptions (Diamant's personal class gets S-rank swords and A-rank axes, and Wolf Knight with the ability to get S-rank daggers).

Every weapon type except Arts, Axes and Staves has a good S-rank that shows up for free eventually. You don't get most of them until the last 4 or 5 maps, and some of them will probably be weaker than the Silver forges you might already be using (and expensive enough to forge that you might not bother) so a class having an S rank is nice but not make or break for its usefulness.

Diamant is also one of the few people with the bld growth to actually use S rank weapons well. Like of the S rank weapons you get naturally, the good ones would be Calabolg, super heavy but strong sword, Brionic, a spear but even heavier, Nova, brave tome actually worthy of S tier, and Cindequenda, a good dagger you get on the second to last map that's maybe as strong as +3 silver. Nova is easily the best, Calabolg is fine on Diamant because it's base damage is good and you're probably running a +hit skill on him because his dex cap sucks. Brionic suffers because every spear user I've used has noodly arms and can't heft the drat thing anyway. The rest of the S ranks are smash weapons, and thus useless. All weapons losing accuracy as you get higher in rank also hurts them, as their damage increase is nowhere near strong enough to matter to me. The rest are from country donations and I'm never donating enough to unlock one let alone all 4 to test.
