Sorry for yet another jr pass question, it's the last thing I'm organising - is there a specific supplier you need to buy it from to access online shinkansen seat booking? Google is not clear at all. Not a huge concern but convenience is king for me.

My understanding is that you have to buy it from the official JR page which is here - https://japanrailpass.net/en/

Apparently, this is not a one time incident. It's just one time in particular that has blown up in the media. But it has been happening more than it should which is never.

Long before this incident conveyer belt sushi has been dying anyway over the past decade. The novelty factor remains with tourists, and sometimes people with young kids have no choice. But otherwise, everyone in that audience has moved on to tachigui or "mawaranai kaitenzushi." Nobody wants sushi that has been sitting on a belt for even 30 minutes or so, especially given covid. For the last 3-4 years before kids came along, the wife and I would go to kaitenzushi almost weekly but basically never took anything off the belt.

Yeah, I've been to conveyer belt and just order off the menu. It's cool to do once or twice but I'd much rather get higher quality fish and rice at a nicer place.

Look at ryokan instead, or even hotels with tatami rooms. Everything you need to know should be on the hotel website or Google Maps photos.

I'm perfectly happy with ryokans. (Honestly, I'm perfectly happy with literally anything, but I wanted something special for dad.)

Lemme float Nagoma by my dad - he's been very laser focused on Iya, so he hasn't investigated the rest of the area. I do want to do Shimanami, so another thing to sneak in.

We're planning a ~10 day first timer Japan visit and are budgeting some time in both Osaka and Kyoto. Any opinion on which city would be better on a weekend? Is there a day of the week (like Sundays in a lot of european travel) where half the restaurants and attractions are closed in Japan?

Osaka would be more lively at night but it really depends on what kind of experience you are looking for. They are close enough that you can go back and forth easily, but obviously Kyoto is going to be more traditional and Osaka is going to be more modern(ish). It also depends on what time of the year you will be there.

On past trips we’ve made a quick trip to Kobe from Osaka for good ol’ Kobe steak - usually from one of the Mouriya restaurants at lunch time where I think it’s a little cheaper. I’m the one person in the group who isn’t really a foodie and likes spending a lot on nice/fancy meals, but this is my one exception. (I’d happily survive on Ichiran Ramen and KFC otherwise, tbh)

We can’t be hosed this time though since we’ve kinda done everything else we liked the look of in Kobe and it seems a bit silly to add in that extra travel just for a big lunch. Can anyone recommend a decent place in central Tokyo or Osaka that might do comparatively nice steaks without costing too much? The whole thing of the chef cooking in front of us was fun but isn’t a dealbreaker.

Absolutely doesn’t need to be fancy decor and definitely no fancy dress code, just a casual piece of tasty marbled meat.

Last Friday of July is usually Niihama fireworks.

The best summer event is chilling and swimming in the Kamogawa River in Saijo. It's clear 6 feet deep with boulders to jump off…

There are also lots of rafting companies in the Oboke-Koboke area (near Iya).

Chichibugahama is always wonderful, it's the instagram beach, but it's not a swimming beach because it's too shallow and warm.

Thanks! Unfortunately won't be able to make the fireworks because fuji rock is that weekend.. But the festival at hayatama taisha is on the 14th so I've got some time between then and fuji rock. Going to rent a car, I guess that's pretty necessary for shikoku, so I've got the freedom to not necessarily do things in geographical order if I have reason not to.

This is normal for Japan in the winter. Be prepared to constantly have to strip when you go anywhere cuz the heating is jacked up to insane levels. Especially annoying if you are walking around and are warm from the walk. Then you go into an izakaya or something and have to sit there in your underwear because you are pouring sweat because they think people like eating in saunas.

The train lines are set at like 24 in Tokyo in the summer, hardly vegetable crisper temps never mind the deep freeze. And that’s before you take into account the “light” A/C car, which is a refuge in winter but the worst in summer.
