I don't know how expensive cars are in Japan but he should actually have pretty decent cash flow.

Though 40 hrs a week is maybe not quite full time by salaryman standards. Being largely inertia driven with infrequent and minor acceleration, the thought of applying to his employer for full time status has not crossed Tohru's mind, though if such a request succeeded it would perhaps make the longer commute sit better with him. If he does so and gets his wish, maybe it'll signify the end of this timeline.
